I TALK ABOUT PICTURES FOR TODAY. I HAVE ABOUT 20 TO POST WITH THIS BLOG, BUT DID NOT WANT TO USE UP CELLULAR DATA TO DO IT. TOMORROW'S CAMPGROUND HAS WIFI, I WILL CATCH UP THEN. The one all about Talladega Superspeedway I fell asleep last night, at 9:00, or was it 10:00. Sitting at my dinette. I woke up at midnight. I rolled into bed and slept until 6:00 CDT. Winston wouldn’t let me sleep. He knew it was time to get up. I had turned the A/C off and it was cool, but I could see it was going to rain soon, so we went for a quick walk and we both got attacked by mosquitoes. Back into the rig, sprayed us both down, and back for walk. Winston has very sensitive skin, and ... read more

The one about heat Since I had free wifi last night, I worked on the computer, got all my blog stuff set up, got my expenses spreadsheet ready to go and planned out my trip a little more. Before I knew it, it was midnight. I took Winston for a quick walk and the temperature had dropped significantly enough to turn off the A/C. I put on my fan and immediately fell asleep, no reading, no nothing. By the way, I have finished 2 books: Dead and Gone, Sookie Stackhouse (True Blood) #9 and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. I love the Sookie stories, light, fluffy, easy reading, and I do read these on my kindle rather than listen. I listened to Snow Flower; a real chick book, generally not my kind of reading, but ... read more

(Shocco Springs) How can it be December 2nd??? Boy the days go by fast. This has been such a wonderful project, and today it ended. There was a SOWER team at Shocco when we arrived, and before they left, a week later, we prayed for them. A second SOWER team came a week before we left, and before we pulled out today, they circled up and prayed for us! It’s times like that that remind us what it’s really about. Shocco has a four year project remodeling rooms and offices. The men have been working in the motel rooms. We ran out of laundry to fold, so we spent one day painting bathrooms in four of the rooms. It was fun to see what they’re doing, and be part of it. For one day. Then we ... read more

(Shocco Springs Conference Center) We’re serving Talladega, Alabama this month, at Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center. (Talladega is about 120 miles west of Atlanta, and 40 miles east of Birmingham.) I mentioned that the trees were bare when we left Kentucky, but they were green with just a hint of color when we arrived here, and two weeks later the ground is covered with red and yellow leaves! I have a whole different perspective on autumn leaves now, because we don’t have to rake them, and we don’t have to look at bare trees for the next five months! So as they drift down, and pile up on the grass, it’s nothing but beautiful! We were to have six couples on this team, but one man was hurt on the last project and had to go ... read more

Lost In America H. Wayne Cleghorn January 2009 In 2008, after watching the movie Bucket List, my wife presented me with an empty note book. The only writing in the book was at the top of the first page. It simply said, “Wayne’s Bucket List”. If you haven’t seen the movie, the character played by Morgan Freeman finds out he has terminal cancer. He begins to make a list of all the things he wants to do before he “kicks the bucket”. For a long time I would pick the book up and just look at it. Then one day I wrote something down. A few weeks later came something else. Then one night, I picked up my bucket list and for some reason wrote “To be lost in America.” Why did I write that? What ... read more

Lost in America March 2009 H. Wayne Cleghorn After deciding to drive from Reno, NV to Colorado on Highway 50, I booked my flight to Reno and return flight to Atlanta. Then I started a close examination of what lie on Highway 50 between eastern Nevada and central Utah. To my surprise, almost nothing. There are very few gas stations, and even fewer hotels. My options were to gas up at the last gas station in Nevada and hope I could make it to the first gas station in Utah. Visions of me walking away from a rental car with an empty gas tank kept dancing in my head. So, I made an executive decision. I would still fly to Reno, but instead of driving east, I would drive west. I decided to drive through nothern ... read more

(Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center) Bob and I have so much to be thankful for, and this lifestyle right up there on our list. We are so privileged to be able to travel and meet people and be serving the Lord at the same time, and we’re always aware of that privilege. I think I mentioned that we’re meeting with the MMAPpers (Mobile Mission Assistance Program). Two of the couples got here in early November because of some special circumstances, so they’ve been working on tasks separate from ours, but have been doing morning devotions and Bible study and our social events with us. It’s hard for us to leave fellow RVICS after we’ve been together for a month, but leaving theses MMAP couples is going to be even tougher, because we can’t pretend like we ... read more

(Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center) Happy Thanksgiving, tomorrow! The camp is closed Wednesday through Sunday, so we had a two day work week! When we first got to Talladega I said this is a surprisingly small town; I expected a city, because we’ve heard so much about Talladega Superspeedway~~a famous NASCAR track. The population is a little over 17,000 but the shopping area is small, with way too many empty store fronts, and the residential area is spread over a large area. Many of the residents work in Birmingham. Talladega doesn’t give the appearance of a thriving community. It does have a section of fast food/Walmart-type stores, although that’s small, too. One really fun part of it is the “square”. The downtown stores are built in a square, with the court house in the middle of ... read more

(Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center) Last week the trees were glowing with color, but then over the weekend it got down to the mid 30s with wind, and the leaves lost their brilliance, and most of them lost their hold on the trees. Now the ground is covered with the red leaves. Another thing that's really funny, and has become a part of our lives it seems (except when we were in Dickinson!) is the acorns. In California I kept going on about how big they were, and here they're about the size of a piece of hominy, but there are so very many. They're so small that when you step on them, and if you put your foot on the ground, you step on lots at one time, you crush them. But the funny thing ... read more

(Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center) We arrived at Shocco Springs Friday afternoon to find fall colors just in their peak! At Carson Springs they had lost their brilliance, but here they’re still bright. AND we don’t have to rake leaves!! We’re parked in spots with trees surrounding us, and we’re on level ground~~two things you don’t often find at camps! There are six couples, and for the very first time, we’re meeting up with couples we’ve worked with on other projects….Mo and Leona from our September project in Michigan; Earl and Nancy from last fall’s projects at Silver Spur and Victory Ranch; and then Marvin and Jackie, and Gary and Sharon from Carson Springs…it’s like a mini-reunion! We have new friends, Larry and Carol, too. And something else new to us: we’re meeting with two couples ... read more
