"He wishes me most particular to write what larks. He says you will
understand. I hope and do not doubt it will be agreeable to see him,
even though a gentleman, for you had ever a good heart, and he is a
worthy, worthy man. I have read him all, excepting only the last
little sentence, and he wishes me most particular to write again what
larks."

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

Today is the day I return to my home in Alabama. In a way, the time has gone by quickly yet it seems I have been gone for a long time. I am anxious to see my beautiful Carol. I have spoken to her every day but usually for just a few moments. I have missed her greatly! One night, I was sitting by the bed writing, and I could have sworn she was laying in the bed a foot or so away. I looked over several times because I had the feeling she was there but, she wasn't. I have enjoyed my time of exploration and freedom. It will be difficult to readjust to my everyday life again. There are moments and memories I will always be able to escape to when work or life ... read more

Today is the day I have to say goodbye to the cabin and, even worse, to Oregon. In spite of the rain for most of my stay, I have enjoyed every moment I have spent in Oregon. I cannot say enough about the people I encountered on my trip through this beautiful and eclectic State. Not once was I treated rudely or greeted by someone who wasn't smiling. This speaks volumes for the kind of people that reside in Oregon. I will give you an example of an encounter: One day, I had pulled over to do something. I don't even remember what I was doing. I looked up and a man had pulled up beside me. In Alabama, this might be good...might no be so good. I was ready for the "might not be so ... read more

Well, I redeemed myself for forgetting to turn the heat on night-before-last. Last night I forgot to turn it down! Yes, it was a little on the warm side when I woke up. I got up to look out the window (and open it too) and was greeted by wind, clouds, and rain. Not a little sprinkle of rain, it was pouring! After removing my head from the freezer to cool down, I decided to head back to Government Camp (Can you tell I like this place?) and see if there was anything I could get into. I ended up stopping in at Mt. Hood Adventures and talking with Mandy. Mandy told me about the only thing I could do on foot today would be to rent a pair of snow shoes and hike in the ... read more

I knew something was wrong this morning when I woke up and could see my breath hanging in the air over me as I lay in the warm bed. Then it occured to me that I had turned the heat off when I built the big fire in the fireplace last night. When I fell asleep on the couch, I forgot to turn it back on before I went to bed. Needless to say, I made a mad dash downstairs to turn the heat on. I dressed quickly and decided to go back to Government Camp and take the road up to Timberline Lodge. It started to rain as I was leaving the cabin, so I was thinking it might be snowing pretty good in Government Camp and at higher elavations. I was right! The five ... read more

As I begin the drive to Rhododendron it begins to snow! I am glad I played golf yesterday when it was only cold and windy. Today, it is very, very windy, cold, and it is snowing. The wind is driving the snow in sideways as I drive away from the Sunriver Resort. Thanks to all the miles I put behind me yesterday, I only have to drive a little over 100 miles to the log cabin I have rented on the banks of the Sandy River. As I drove through Bend, Oregon, I was in need of a hair cut. It was on my “to do” list before I left home but never found time “to do” it. I stopped at a place called Creative Experiences and a very nice lady named Jennifer gave me a ... read more

I walked outside last night and I could hear the wolves howling. They seemed to be everywhere. The sky was clear and I could see millions of stars. The cool breeze felt really good...then I headed back in to sit by the fire. :-) I awoke this morning and looked out the window. Did I mention it was going to be cold and windy today? I put on my long-johns and headed for the golf course. Crosswater Golf Club is the site of one of the Majors for the Champions Tour. I checked in at the Pro Shop, loaded up the rental clubs, and headed to the driving range. I knew immediately that I could not play with these clubs. The starter came over (I was the only person on the driving range) and we began ... read more

I intended to sleep late this morning but I awoke on CDT after going to bed on Pacific Time...again. I tried to go back to sleep but could not. So I got up, packed up, and hit the road. I knew where I was going but wasn't sure of the route. I just knew I wanted to stay off the Interstates. Carson City is the State Capital of Nevada. It has a small town feel to it, and unlike Reno, has a unique character to it. I really liked Carson Valley. What a beautiful place! Today's trip would require me to go back through Reno as I made my way north. I think I finally figured out what bothers me about this place. Besides being ugly, it just doesn't belong here. As I drove back through ... read more

When I told my friend Mike Swinson that I was headed west and would begin in Reno, he said "You are going to Yosemite..right?" Until then, I had not even considered going to Yosemite. I was looking north, and Yosemite was about 2 1/2 hours to the south. After my conversation with Mike, I realized that I did not need to be this close to an American treasure and not see it. All I can say is, "Thank you, Mike." My trip to Yosemite would be through Carson City to a small community in California called Lee Vining. From there I would take Highway 120 West toward Tioga Pass in the Park. The problem was the Pass was not open all the way into the Park because the roads had not been cleared of snow. I ... read more

Day 1 - A Day of Travel I was a little concerned about the Swine Flu outbreak as the days grew closer for my flight to Reno. If you are going to catch an airborne virus, the best place is an airplane where you are breathing the same air over and over again. I decided that if I boarded the plane and saw no pigs, I was good to go. There were no pigs, unless you count the big fat man that barely fit down the isle. One of he reasons I love to travel is because I love to watch and study people. So after arriving in Reno and picking up my rental SUV, I headed straight for Wal-Mart. Is there any better place to watch people and learn about the area? I think not! ... read more

Lost in America March 2009 H. Wayne Cleghorn After deciding to drive from Reno, NV to Colorado on Highway 50, I booked my flight to Reno and return flight to Atlanta. Then I started a close examination of what lie on Highway 50 between eastern Nevada and central Utah. To my surprise, almost nothing. There are very few gas stations, and even fewer hotels. My options were to gas up at the last gas station in Nevada and hope I could make it to the first gas station in Utah. Visions of me walking away from a rental car with an empty gas tank kept dancing in my head. So, I made an executive decision. I would still fly to Reno, but instead of driving east, I would drive west. I decided to drive through nothern ... read more
