The first night in Mexico was definitely an interesting one. After missing the bus from Cancun to Playa, I took one of the famous crazy Mexican cabs. We made it to Playa, two hours later, and I got checked into my hostel. There was only one other person in the dorm, a guy named Ben. He immediately put my travel experience to shame by telling me about the 100 countries he had visited in North and South America, Africa, Europe, and Asia. He was from Perth, Australia so hes got about every contintent covered. He had been away for 2 years traveling, which is way too long for my taste. He ended up in the hostel I had chosen because he had to leave the last one in Playa at 2AM because of hundreds of bed ... read more

Well, we have finally arrived! The flights ended up taking 26 hours in total and I'm now not the biggest fan of united airlines.... I was searched at every airport we went through! Which of course worried me by the fact that I was carrying all my Cuban documentation, but thankfully that was not found. We arrived in Cancun at 12 midnight and from what we saw it definitely lives up to the reputation as the party town!! We managed to get a lift with a local van who seemed to also be the local dealer as he was organising with other passengers in the bus to drop stuff off later! The town itself was in full swing as we drove through, but by this time we were way too tired to actually join in, but ... read more

Buen Viaje which literally means good travels. We have been here about two weeks and have a few more to go. We have had some really, really rainy weather but that is what happens when your at the Caribbean coast during hurricane season. The rain has been awesome with heavy, hot and windy down pours, how liberating to the soul. These crazy storms would be called squalls by the proper sailor. Everyday is another day in paradise as you look out and see the sea and all it’s magical colors and tones even with heavy, dark cloud cover. With all the waves and churned up seas snorkeling has only happened once, however it is perfect weather for boogie boarding and boy are we enjoying the “like totally tubular” waves we have surfed with my uncles body ... read more

It’s strange how the most spontaneous decisions always lead to the best experiences. I think my time in Mexico was one of the most challenging, but also the most fun, months of my life. After my Eastern Europe jaunt, during my week or so as a tourist in London (I was the only English person at most of the sites), I decided that I wanted to live and work abroad. There is plenty of work out there for an engineer but it tends to be in English speaking countries. It was Slovenia that I really fancied after falling in love with the place a few months ago and someone gave me the idea of teaching English. Despite having met lots of people who have done it and raved about it, I had never really considered teaching. ... read more

September 19th started out with heavy rain on Caye Caulker and last preparations for leaving on our part. I exchanged my flipflops (my best friends on my travels!) for my sneakers, which were ruined since the ATM-Cave anyway, put on a raincoat, wrapped my backpack in a garbage bag and stepped out into the rain with my fellow travellers, to catch the water-taxi to Belize City, our first stop on the long stretch to Playa del Carmen / Mexico. We didn't need to hurry out into the rain, though - it turned out the first water-taxi of the day wasn't running for some mysterious reason, so we had to wait for an extra hour. By then it had stopped raining, though, so most of hung out at the dock, took some last goodbye-pictures of the island ... read more

What a way to begin a day! We awoke from a few hours of sleep (2) to get up and leave for the airport by 3 am. Yet the flight was one of the best I have been on! It flew from Spokane to Seattle and was one of the best ways I have ever begun my day! The full moon was to the west and as we flew towards the moon the sun began to catch up with us from the east as it peaked above the horizon. Every direction we looked there where pieces of Washington showing them selves as if to say good bye. First it was Chelan and the Lake then Glacier Peak and a few hot spots still smoking and glowing from summer fires. Next it was Rainer and it’s Majestic ... read more

Hi all, When I last wrote, I was in a town called Flores in Guatemala, about which the least said the better. Our hotel was very grotty, run by very lazy staff, and our sink had a leaky pipe so the bathroom floor was sopping wet. Gareth (my roommate) and I had a bit of a nightmare with our laundry. We gave it to reception at 2pm on the Saturday and were told it would be ready on Sunday morning, but Gareth spotted it still hanging on the line at 9pm, dripping wet (it had started raining at 5 pm and our washing was still hanging out!). We finally got it back at 10pm, not particularly clean or dry. Needless to say we didn´t pay them. We got up the following day at 2.45am to view ... read more

Sorry that it's been a while! I typed up all the text ages ago but have had trouble downloading photos! Soooooooo...............after weeks of anticipation I finally arrived at the Carribean coast...... in the rain- boo! I started in a town called Tulum which is near to a gorgeous beach (apparently) but there was no point going to the beach in the rain, and nothing to do in the town, so I hopped on a bus to a more touristy town an hour up the coast in hope of doing some shopping! Playa del Carmen certainly had more to occupy myself with in the day, but there wasn´t even a hint of culture there. Sometimes it´s fun to be uncultured though! Stayed at a nice hostel (still with my friend Katharina) and in order to save money ... read more

So I´ve spent the last 10 days exploring the Yucatan peninsula. In hurricane season. Luckily I didn´t experience one myself but we were told to expect rain everyday and so we´ve actually been extremely lucky and hardly had any. Although the weather does have a habit of going from bright sunshine to torrential rain in the space of a minute, which unfortunately I discovered on my walk to the internet café this morning. The tour started off in Cancun and there isn´t much to say about the place - it has a very westernised hotel strip stretching for about 10 miles where all the McDonalds are located. We were staying downtown which gave us a slightly more authentic experience but I still managed to find Burger King. We only stayed one night before heading off to ... read more

Hola amigos!! We know that many of you have been longing for our first update =) Well, here it is... We started our trip almost 2 weeks ago in Mexico City!! Spent a few days at the cool Hostel Amigo. Walked around the big park and old beautiful buildings and enjoyed tacos and som tequila. At our hostel we met Juan who was born in Houston by his mexican parents. Together with him, his brother Rodrigez, sister Sandra and cousin Omar we took the bus to a small remote village in the mountains called Luvianos to celebrate their grandfathers 74th birthday :) Lots of good traditional mexican food, tequila and a lot of mexican-style-dancing and singing made it a great experience! When we returned to mexico city we made a daytrip to an aztec-city and the ... read more
