For those of you who don´t know: My sister and me went to Mexico, Guatemala and Belize in September 2007. We took this absolutely beautiful trip with GAP, had an amazing time, gained quite a tan (which, by now, is sadly almost completely gone), met a whole lot of great people and fell totally in love with Latin America.
Go there, if you have the chance!!

More in the blog. ;)

September 19th started out with heavy rain on Caye Caulker and last preparations for leaving on our part. I exchanged my flipflops (my best friends on my travels!) for my sneakers, which were ruined since the ATM-Cave anyway, put on a raincoat, wrapped my backpack in a garbage bag and stepped out into the rain with my fellow travellers, to catch the water-taxi to Belize City, our first stop on the long stretch to Playa del Carmen / Mexico. We didn't need to hurry out into the rain, though - it turned out the first water-taxi of the day wasn't running for some mysterious reason, so we had to wait for an extra hour. By then it had stopped raining, though, so most of hung out at the dock, took some last goodbye-pictures of the island ... read more

After being off the coast for so long it was high time for the Caribbean Sea once again. And where better to reacquaint us with it than Caye Caulker, the island of dreams? Belize is a small country, so our journey from San Ignacio to Caye Caulker wasn't as long a haul as we're used to by now. First roundabout two hours (in a Belizean chicken bus!) to Belize city and then another 45 minutes by boat to get to the island - and of course, that part of the journey wasn't boring at all. I love boats! Caye Caulker itself is a lovely, small (pop. +/- 400) island 30 miles from Belize city and another 20 from Ambergris Caye (/San Pedro). The atmosphere there is VERY relaxed and "Go Slow" (sometimes adorned with "or else ... read more

Time to say goodbye (or rather: see you - I'm sure I'll be back!) to Guatemala - on we went over the border to Belize. No chaotic border-chrossings this time, just a van-ride, a couple of stamps and an exit-fee and we found ourselves in Belize, a very nice and small english-speaking country with a decidedly Caribbean, laid-back feel about it. Our first stop was in San Ignacio, a small, not too spectacular town just over the Guatemalian border. We stayed in a couple of wooden shacks just outside of town, in the middle of nature. That meant lots of hummingbirds (they are SO great!), geckos and iguanas - and lots of mosquitos of course, but by now we're used to those. ;) Since our bus-journey wasn't too long that day we had almost all day ... read more

Finally added the pictures, folks. As promised, although I'm again a day late. ;) --- As I mentioned before we were off early to Tikal, perhaps the most impressive set of Mayan ruins, situated in the just as impressive jungle of Peten. We arrived at the gates of the nature reserve (stretching several hundreds of square miles around Tikal) around six, too late for sunrise, but early enough for it to still be cool and dry in the jungle. Said jungle hosts an impressive multitude of wildlife - bears, jaguars, snakes, tucans, crocodiles, tarantulas, hundreds of different birds and insects, geckos, etc.pp. - it's a nature lover's dream! First off we decided on some breakfast for the group at the restaurant near the ruins - after all, you need to be fit to climb huge pyramids! ... read more

Another quick update, since we took a flight to Flores and arrived here one day ahead of schedule. Thus, more time for blogging! Yesterday (Sept. 11th), I still didn't really feel a hundred percent yet, due to my food-poisining; nevertheless I decided to join the others for breakfast at the Macadamia-Nut-farm - something that Tiago had been going on about for the whole trip already. This meant two things: more chicken bus rides (though only 15 minutes either way) and me having to eat more than I had tried before. I declared myself for fit enough, though, and let's just say I definitely made the right decision there. We met up at ten, so we could blissfully sleep a full 9 hours (that's a first on this trip!) and had a nice walk through Antigua's lovely ... read more

After having such a lovely time in Mexico we were of course a little sad to have to leave that awesome country with the friendly people already - we´ll be back at the end of our trip, though. The first border crossing of our trip was chaotic, but fun. From San Christibal we first took yet another comfortable, fully climatized bus to the Mexican border station, filled out our visa-forms there, piled into three cabs, drove to the Guatemalan border (which, weirdly enough, is about 3 kilometers down the road) and got our new visa-stamps there without any trouble, though the border there is certainly chaotic and full with people, all of them busy with selling things, exchanging money (with HUGE stacks of money they cary around in their pockets) or crossing the border themselves. The ... read more

Okay, another update for you guys (I keep hoping anyone´s reading this...) Last time I blogged we were still in Mérida - we have moved a lot since then. On the morning of the fourth we got on another ADO-bus for quite a long haul - to Palenque. On the way we met quite a nice dutch guy who seems to have almost the same itinerary as we do - only he´s doing it on his own. There are a lot of lone travellers here - I´m quite impressed with that, actually; I wouldn´t dare to tour around on my own, especially with only rudimentary spanish language-skills. Anyways - after a full day on the bus we finally got to the nature reserve of Palenque, which is situated in the beautiful jungle of Chiapas. The wildlife ... read more

Okay - here´s an updated version of the blog entry I wrote earlier, since I have more time today. The cenote-stuff is newly added, as well as a little background info on some other things we did. First for the time we actually spent in Cancun: all in all, we went to three different beaches, two of them on the Cancùn Hotel-strip and one of them on the beautiful Isla Mujeres, a couple of km off shore. Isla Mujeres The island itself is neither as hectic nor as "touristy" as Cancun itself, while still having VERY nice beaches and, as we´re told, great diving opportunities (which we didn´t try out, because we´re headed to belize, caye caulker & playa del carmen later on the trip, which are all famous for diving & snorkelling as well). In ... read more

Hi everyone, as promised I'll try and keep you up to date about our when & wheres. We've been here in Cancun for two and a half days now and I can tell you my spanish just doesn't cut it - which is espescially annoying since people here don't speak a lot of english, for which of course I can't blame them at all. The g'old hand&feet sure come in handy, I can tell you that! But let's start at the beginning. Amsterdam and seeing Tova, At & Joyce were great - we went to have some Greek food and talked a whole lot in the short time we had together. Great to know A&T are coming over for the Bakker-family-meeting this fall! Our flight to Cancun on the 30th left at 9.40 in Amsterdam, so ... read more
