Travel Blog Posts
Hi all, I know, I know, I've been really bad at keeping this blog up to date, but I've set aside a few days now so here goes... Last time I wrote, I had just changed trucks, driver and guide in Rio, and also half the group left to be replaced by a new group of people. I am pleased to say that the organisation of the tour immediately improved considerably under the new guide, Mark. He was a lot better organised than Jo, and it probably helped that he was a 6ft 6 tall ex-professional-rugby-playing skinhead, so he immediately earned our respect. Little things like not stopping for toilet breaks every hour, instead waiting for someone to ask for a stop, and not getting plates and chairs out during our lunch stops meant that we ... read more
Hi all, I have managed to upload some pictures from the places I wrote about last time, so enjoy. Cheers David... read more
Hi all, Last time I wrote, I had just had my bag stolen in Buenos Aires, losing two cameras and all my photos of that wonderful city. Fortunately, I managed to replace my SLR in Paraguay so I wasn´t without a camera for long. Unfortunately, I can´t upload any images in this cafe, so there are no more pictures for now. After spending a couple of days after Xmas in the Argentinian lake district, we entered Patagonia, which is beautiful, but very bleak and windy. On our first lunch stop, the wind was so strong, we could barely hold our plates, and our sandwiches ended up containing more grit than cheese. And it was bloody freezing. We spent 3 nights in a hostel in the touristy town of El Calafate, and on the morning of New ... read more
Blimey, it's been a while! Hope you all had a great Xmas and New Year. This was going to be a super long blog, but whilst sitting here earlier, some bastard swiped my bag with my camera in it so I´ve spent the last 2 hours in a police station and don't feel up to finishing this. I´ll carry on another time... I'm also having a few problems uploading photos, so I´ll attach more next time. Other than that, it´s going well! Since I last wrote, I've been to Bolivia, Argentina, Chili, Argentina again, back into Chili and now I'm in Argentina again. On Sunday we're off to Paraguay and then it's on to Brazil. It's hard to remember what day it is let alone what country I´m in. Bolivia is the poorest country in South ... read more
Hi all, Just a quickie to wish you all a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. I´m camping for 12 nights in a row, starting tomorrow, so I probably won't be in touch until well into January. Have fun David x... read more
Hi all, Last time I wrote, I´d just arrived in Peru, and now I´ve just arrived in Bolivia, so I´ve got a lot to catch up with but I´ll try and keep it brief! It´s getting quite difficult to find enough time to write this blog, but I will persevere! After camping on the beach in Punta Sal, we drove to Huanchaco, a fishing port famous for its reed fishing boats. We visited the nearby Inca ruins of Chan Chan, which was the largest pre-Colombian city in South America, around 20km². Built between 850 and 1470, the site has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it was not difficult to see why as it was a huge place that had been well restored. We then went to see a couple of ancient pyramids called ... read more
Hi all, It´s been almost 2 weeks since I last wrote, but I´ve packed a lot into that time and it seems so much longer. Last time I wrote, I was about to meet up with the group I will be spending at least the next three months with. There are 26 of us in the group, which will rise to 34 in a couple of weeks, which makes it a very different experience to that in Central America, where we had between 4 and 12 people. There are quite a few couples and more single guys than girls, and as well as the usual Brits, Aussies and Kiwis, there´s a guy from Iceland and a guy from Japan. They all seem very nice people, although some of them are huge drinkers, which could make things ... read more
Hi all, Firstly, thanks for all your messages and emails and apologies to those of you I haven´t been able to reply to yet. I´ve just returned from an amazing few days in the Galapagos Islands, but I've got over 2 weeks to catch up with so this could be a long one... Having survived the bus-hitting-cow incident, we spent a couple of days in a town called Oaxaca in southern Mexico, which I can safely say is the most unfriendly place I´ve been to so far. In fact, I think Mexico is the unfriendliest country I´ve been to far! A couple of times I found myself in a cafe or restaurant where I was the only person there, and the waitress could barely bring herself to serve me. Maybe that´s why I was the only ... read more
Hi all, Well, the Central America leg of my tour is now over and I am now in South America, having flown from Mexico City to Quito, the capital of Ecuador, yesterday. And amazingly, none of my luggage got lost or stolen! I have to meet my new group soon and don´t have time to do a proper entry now, so the next instalment will be double-length. I´m off to the Galapagos Islands tomorrow for 9 days... can´t wait! I doubt there will be much internet access over there, so I´ll be in touch when I get back. Hopefully I´ll have a few pictures of some boobies (the blue-footed variety of course). Byeeee D x ... read more
Hi all, Well, I´m still in Mexico, although this part of my adventure ends on Saturday and I´m just about ready to move on now. Don´t get me wrong, I´m still having a great time, but I feel it´s time to meet a new set of people now (and my new roomate is very much into doing his own thing, so I´m finding myself on my own quite a bit). After a couple more nights in Playa del Carmen, we headed off early on Monday morning for the Mayan ruins of Tulum. Whilst these were far from the most impressive ruins that we´ve seen, they did benefit from a stunning location, right on the Caribbean coast. After wandering around for an hour in the searing heat, we took advantage of this and had a refreshing dip ... read more
