We arrived here on Friday afternoon, after a comfortable four and half hour bus ride arcoss mountains and valleys from Patzcuaro. This is a different country from Patzcuaro and Morelia..very touristy and tourist driven. Everyone attempts to speak English to us, and to sell us something....but the beaches are beautiful and the seafood great....Hotels are more expensive: we are paying $92 a night here compared to $35 in Morelia and Patzcuaro...but we have an ocean view..and direct access to the beach. Today, Saturday, I woke up early and decided to go for a run on the beach, since I was feeling better. There were many runners and walkers; a mix of Mexicans and gringos. Again here, there are many older people, and not many backpackers. After my run I waited til the sun came up far ... read more

The Port of Call on our 5th day (… notice I have no idea what the actual day, or date is!! )… at least we’ve been on water for 5 days , is Zihuatanejo ( sounding like Zee want in a(long) o ….got it ? … nobody on ship did !!! ) . Actually, they called the port Zihuatanejo / Ixtapa, but we never got to see any of Ixtapa. They say it is all the large high-rise hotels down the Bay and Zihuatanejo is the village. This is the only port on our cruise that we had never been to before so we thought we might take a full city tour to get as much in as possible. When getting info about a “tour”….. the guide on board said, “Don’t take any of the taxi’s ... read more

Anyone familiar with the above quote made famous by the spectacular movie The Shawshank Redemption will know where I am. The quaint town of Zihuatanejo sits on the southern Pacific coast of Mexico just north of Acapulco. It's everything I thought it would be, and more. Just a three hour flight from L.A. it's the perfect location for a short getaway. Gregg and Angela run Angela´s Hotel & Hostel, rated "Hard To Beat" in 2004 and 2006´s Lonely Planet. I called before leaving (011-52-755-112-2191) and Gregg´s warm and friendly personality sealed the deal. (Loads and weather altered original plans and I lost two days in the process, cutting the trip to just 4 days.) In the heart of Zihua and close to everything important to me (banks, beach, restaurants) Angelas Hostel is clean, charming, comfortable, fun, ... read more

so here we are, in the legendary Zihuatanejo. you may remember it from such films as the shawshank redemption. you know, where he goes at the end. i apologize if i am spoiling the end of that movie for anyone, but seriosuly, if you havent seen it, you´re probably a cinematic idiot anyway. no offence. yesterday we drove from puerto escondido to a little place called pie de la cuesta. its just laittle ways north of acapulco. acapulco was really hard to drive through and the outskits were pretty dirty. the center looked a lot like LA, complete with drug violence. pie de la cuesta was a lot quiter and relaxing. brendna got kinda sick though and he puked up his dinner. in the meantime, i hung out with a montreal couple and some guys from ... read more

I woke up on Wednesday morning, cold as fuck. I recently purchased a heater to heat my large uninsulated room. The heater successfully warms my toes when I place them right over the radiator. My immediate thought was ¨I need to get out of town, fast.¨The last time I made such a drastic claim was when I was being bombarded with coconuts on the mean streets of Lagos, Portugal, true story (semi-true story.) Pachuca was exactly 20º (celsius) colder than I like it. If it was this cold inside, I could only imagine how cold it would be outside. You guessed it, I imagined it would be COLDER. My water also wasn´t working. Again. Boo. I went to school, just about ready to quit my life in Mexico. When I realized I HAD OPTIONS. I decided ... read more

This blog by Lucas: Tequila, scorpion honey, harsh dew of the doglands, essence of Aztec, crema de cacti; tequila, oily and thermal like the sun in solution; tequila, liquid geometry of passion; Tequila, the buzzard god who copulates in midair with the ascending souls of dying virgins; tequila, firebug in the house of good tatse; O tequila, savage water of sorcery, what confusion and mischief your sly, rebellious drops do generate! Ok, so Tom Robbins wrote that in Still Life with Woodpecker, but Tom and Carolyn Hrushka-Crane lived it in the form of enormous Margarita's at Elvira's Restaurant on our last night (their first) in Zihuatenejo. Only a few hours later, Jac is awakened by the evil gods of food poisoning, while the first light of morning inspires Tom to sing Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler" in ... read more

So I'm not sure this email list, nor the viewing public at large, necessarily needs the details of this "honeymoon" stage of our honeymoon. Well, let's just say the "La Casa Que Canta" (The House That Sings) is one of the great luxury resorts of the planet earth. Everyone should stay here at least once in their lives. Nestled on a cliff overlooking Zihuatenejo Bay, with myriads of infinity pools (fresh and saltwater), staff service perfection and immaculate terraced bungalows, this is paradise. Plus they gave us a bottle of tequila on arrival. Enough said. Recommendations: http://www.lacasaquecanta.com/ ... read more
