And so after a few weeks of some hard work, what better way to enjoy yourself than with a trip to the beach. So off to Zihua we went for a 5 hour bus ride. Just about all of the bus rides offer some form of entertainment in the form of movies or tv shows. We were treated to the gem known as 'Blond and Blonder', starring Pamela Anderson & Denise Richards. Easily one of the worst things I've ever watched (tried to sleep through most), ranking right up there with 'Dirty Dancing' and 'The Notebook'. I won't go into the details but if you're interested, you can look it up on IMDB (don't think I'll be looking for 'Blond and Blonder 2' upon my return). So we finally get to the Zihua and meet up ... read more

Pacific Dreams So, once again I find myself including a few too many photos... Sorry everyone - I tend to think they tell a story of their own, as I’m not actually expecting anyone to struggle through my longwinded stories :) I’ll try to keep it short this time... Maruata I guess I should’ve learned by now that anywhere described in the Lonely Planet isn’t actually going to be anything like what I imagine. This also turned out to be true for the first stop on our search for the Pacific Dream: Long white-sanded beaches with palm trees and cabanas with ocean views. Maruata is described just like that; a secluded little Oceanside village (with potentially no electricity, we read online) known only for the sea turtles that come here and lay their eggs at night ... read more

The holidays away from home are always difficult. You can’t help but think about everything you’re missing out on back home and just want to be with the people you love. But we do our best to have a good time on the ship. Christmas Eve, after we finished work (by which point it was after midnight, so really it was now Christmas day), our department gathered in the playroom for our gift exchange. All the presents were gathered under the tree set up for decoration. We’d pulled names a few weeks back and bought two gifts - a “small” (lower priced) gift for one person and a “large” gift for someone else. I like to think I’m a pretty good gift giver and I was pretty excited by the purchases I’d managed to find for ... read more

I’m slowly starting to fall into the routine of this latest ship. Though it always takes time to feel completely settled and at ease. All of the sea days on our current itinerary are really draining, so when we finally get the break of a port day it’s tempting to just stay in bed all day! But I’ve been making myself get up and out. Yesterday we were in Acapulco and a group of us headed to the movies for an afternoon matinee. But this was no ordinary movie theatre, this was a VIP theatre and it was spectacular! We had leather reclining seats (footrests and everything) to lie back in, or in my case, curl up in. Then there are servers who come around to your seats to take orders for snacks, drinks, food. I ... read more

I hands down had one of the best times ever in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo. I did so many cool things. I went para sailing, sailing, ate raw oysters off the beach, swam through coral, and slept on the beach! And, ah, the beach! The trip was really affordable as well. I think I payed about $200 US dollars the whole 3 days including bus. I also ate like 30 something oysters and some lobster. Not a bad deal. Words seriously cannot describe how amazing the whole trip was, so I will leave it up to my videos and pictures to show you how amazing it was.... read more

This takes us to an 11 hour drive from Manzanillo to another costal paradise. Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa are two towns across a bay from each other that have very different personalities. One is full of all-inclusive resorts perfectly landscaped with legible street signs and the other resembles what Andrew and I have been used to. So we stayed in Zih which had a nice market, sizable fishing activity, and plenty of people. We definitely get looks where ever we go and we are everyone´s "amigo." We took a water taxi to Ixtapa Island where everyone needed their hands greased and took in some good snorkeling. I don´t know how, but we´ve been pretty good at attracting people with a lot to say about where we are going. A Mick Jagger lookalike told us all about Guatemala ... read more

Pacific coast August 15th - August 24th When we had arrived in Taxco we immediately attempted to purchase tickets to our next destination, Zihuatenejo. Unfortunately, unlike as we had thought, there was no direct route. This meant we had to get a bus from Taxco to Acapulco and then Acapulco to Zihuatenejo, meaning an extra 5 hours on our journey time... hey ho! The buses were pretty comfortable and during the change at Acapulco we managed to get some nice tostadas for lunch. On arrival in Zihuatenejo we got a taxi to our hostel, via another hostel which sounded similar, and then it was off to find the Jungle bar where the beers were only 10 pesos. The next morning it was pretty rainy. We headed into the centre to find some breakfast and ended up ... read more

Zeee hwat? Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, made famous from Shawshank Redemption (although I do not remember that part) is a quaint town with not much going on. We stayed at "The Tides" which I believe is to be the best hotel in the city as it was definitely beautiful, great service and amenities as well as great hotel food. I ate Shrimp Ceviche like it would never again be available, 4 days in a row. I also gave in to chicken a couple of times, as strange as it sounds there is not much to offer in terms of vegetarian out here. I certainly did not lose any weight on this trip, I might be back where I was pre Jenny. Each day Craig would go down to the beach and reserve our palapas (umbrellas over beach beds) about ... read more

The journey to Mexico City went smoothly and as the airport is located in the middle of the city we got a great view from the plane. We took a taxi to the Central Autobuses del Sur to get a bus to the Pacific Coast. Our plan was to take a night bus in order to arrive in the morning and thereby save one night's accommodation. This meant however that we had to wait the whole day at the bus station as the bus was not due to leave until 9:30pm. After we bought our tickets with Estrella Blanca, we entertained ourselves by roaming around the area, having coffees at different places, eating Mexican food at the market.... but unfortunately there was not much else to do or see. When it finally got to 9:30 we ... read more
