Our work of art...
We made our mark in Angela's hostel. The journey to Mexico City went smoothly and as the airport is located in the middle of the city we got a great view from the plane.
We took a taxi to the Central Autobuses del Sur to get a bus to the Pacific Coast. Our plan was to take a night bus in order to arrive in the morning and thereby save one night's accommodation. This meant however that we had to wait the whole day at the bus station as the bus was not due to leave until 9:30pm. After we bought our tickets with Estrella Blanca, we entertained ourselves by roaming around the area, having coffees at different places, eating Mexican food at the market.... but unfortunately there was not much else to do or see. When it finally got to 9:30 we were eagerly waiting for the bus to arrive, but instead of an Estrella Blanca we got a Costa Line bus which left at 10:30pm. No explanation was given.
The driver was an arrogant jerk and let all the people who had bought Costa Line tickets on first. The rest of us had to wait. The driver knew the two of us were there
first but couldn't care less and we ended up having to be one of the last people to board the bus. This meant there were no seats available for us to sit together although we had reserved the best seats ever with Estrella Blanca. Kiki kindly asked a man who looked like a farmer if he could move so that we could sit together. He mumbled something which indicated that he was unwilling to oblige. Monia on the other hand was running around the bus like a headless chicken trying to gain sympathy from the other passengers who all pretended not to see her as the selfish bastards wanted to keep their window seats. Kiki was so annoyed she started swearing a little bit too loudly. Monia quietly told her not to swear. Finally Monia asked someone else who agreed to let us have his seat, so we got to sit together in the end. Kiki was now ready to take her travel sickness tablets and fall asleep as the food provided was of course non vegetarian so she couldn't eat anyway. Monia was pleased to have an extra sandwich. And so we were on the road on our way
to Zihuatanejo.
We arrived at about 8 in the morning on the 14th of April and as soon as we got out of the bus we were hit by the tropical heat. So hot so hot. So humid so humid. We went straight to Angela's Hostel where we had booked a room. We were exhausted and therefore napped for a few hours before we went out to explore Zihua.
Zihuatanejo is a small fishing village, the one that the guy in Shawshank Redemption was talking about escaping to. It is a pretty quiet place with a few beaches. There is also a bigger, purpose built tourist town called Ixtapa nearby which we did not bother to visit. Zihua was enough for us. We never really understood the layout of it and at times got lost walking around. We somehow always managed to find where we were going anyway, often being surprised when we suddenly found ourselves back at the hostel.
Before we hit the beach of course we had to do something about our leg situation as our epilators do not work very well with the North American electrical system. Therefore we went around for ages looking
for a place to get our legs waxed. This proved difficult but after a long search we managed to find a Mexican beauty salon which looked more like an old shed than anything. Let's just say we ended up having quite a few red marks on our legs as we don't think the girl had ever done waxing before... It was all done behind a curtain as customers were waiting outside to have their haircuts. It took forever and we were surprised at how patiently people were waiting. As we didn't trust her with our bikini lines, we asked if we could do them ourselves. She agreed and we proceeded to wax ourselves behind the curtain while she was attending to other customers.
Angela's Hostel was nice and clean, but still Kiki found a cockroach running across our floor. Kiki wanted to kill it but Monia said no no no. She tried to capture it in order to set it free, but failed as it was a fast cockroach. Therefore we decided to leave it, view it as our pet and name it cock. Cock as in cockroach. Kiki, just to be sure, frantically repacked all her bags and
zipped them all up tightly to avoid Cock nesting in them.
There was not much to do in Zihua apart from chilling on the beach unless you are into fishing, diving or snorkeling. Some of the locals called it SNORKING much to our amusement.
We met some nice people at the hostel who we hung out with for a bit. It was a relaxing time. Nothing exciting really, except when Kiki was stung on her left ring finger by an evil bee. It hurt a lot. It was the first time she had been stung ever. She was a bit worried as both her parents are allergic, but luckily nothing happened and the finger recovered fully.
After 5 days in Zihua we made our way to Acapulco. To be continued....
