Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

Decided that I needed some serious beach time, so set off from Puebla on a 6 hour bus journey to Acapulco! Buses in Mexico seem to be really good so far. This one had loads of leg room and seats that reclined way back. They also show films on tv screens. Some are in English with Spanish subtitles, but so far the ones dubbed in Spanish have been quite good as Iīve seen them in English and it helps me work out what theyīre saying quite well. When I arrived it was raining, and each night here the weather has been [View Full Entry]

Crazy cliff divers climbing up the cliff.
Yikes!

Today we had a snorkelling tour but it wasn't that clear due to the recent storms. Tiffany lives in a remote town and hasn't seen the ocean since she was nine so it was worth it just to see her enjoy it. We took the courtesy bus after snorkelling to see the rich people's houses, including Sly Stallone's (whose house looks like it hasn't seen paint since the 80s). In the evening we saw the famous cliff divers at La Quebrada. They jump into the water on one side, fight the waves, climb up the cliff on the other side then [View Full Entry]

This morning we took a six hour bus to Acapulco. It's safe to say this town is very unattractive. Overdeveloped and outdated. We spent most of our day at a bar called 'Pescado a la Tall' which was right on the beach but also had a pool. Ludo was in Acapulco for ten days before this tour so he recommened this place. The bar owner told Sid that Ludo sure could drink. When a barman says that, it's not really a badge of honour. In the arvo we were talked into joining a party boat that sails around the harbour. We [View Full Entry]

Thursday 23rd August An early wake up enabled us to call our mothers before arriving at the main bus station an hour before our 10am departure. Another relaxing day sitting in a slow bus that stopped at almost every small village collecting passengers. We thought it was supposed to be an express but we think since there were so few passengers they combined the local bus and the express. We arrived in Acapulco about 6pm. The taxi driver insisted on taking us to his recommended hotel, so Judy stayed in the taxi while Rags checked it out. Needless to say we [View Full Entry]

Currently my ship is off the coast of Costa Rica. We left Mexico on Sunday night, and are now on our way to Panama. My last 2 days in Acapulco were not as busy as my first two, but they were still amazing. On Saturday a group of friends and I headed downtown to the bungee tower. I jumped as well as two others. The tower is awesome for two reasons. First it is right on the beach; the view is gorgeous. Second, it is over a pool, so when you jump you actually can get dunked. It was so [View Full Entry]

Alright I wrote that in a rush and realized that I forgot a lot of important stuff and just wrote skin deep about the experience and some about bars. My bad, its just that the nightlife is the most famous part of Acapulco. Here are a couple of good stories. We watched the US mexico football (soccer to all yall back in the states) at a bar (there arent really restuarnts, just bars) on sunday which was lot of fun. When mexico scored the first goal, confetti blew up all over the place and everyone went wild. fog horns blew and [View Full Entry]

ok Acapulco was absurd. I'll try to go in chronological order becuase so much happened that I can't really say it all, plus I'm not sure who all is reading this and some things are a little too crazy... We bungie jumped the first day which was a lot of fun, and a fitting way to begin Acapulco. Later that night, we went back to Paradise (the bar where we jumped) for a friend's 21st, and we bought him a jump (he wasn't with us earlier in the day). The next day we went to San Diego fort where we saw [View Full Entry]

Acapulco!! Yesterday we docked at 8 am. I was awake, so I was lucky enough to see the city as we pulled into the bay. It was so pretty. I had always pictures Acapulco as a small resort town, like you might find on an island. I was so wrong. Acapulco is a city, and a big one at that. After the city briefing a group of us decided to explore. As we left the dock we were all bombarded with taxi drivers. It was a bit overwhelming. One guy approached us, and after some discussion he agreed to take [View Full Entry]

Buenas dias Amigos, So i have been in Mexico for the last leg of the trip, first stop Cancun (bare with me while typing this as the bloody "w" and "e" on they keyboard hardly work), not much to tell about Cancun really its geared up for American tourists when they are on spring break, so its mainly lounging by the pool or on the beach and drinking shitloads, so was pretty dam good although i did manage to burn my armpits in the sun, ow! Went downtown to mingle with the locals but theres not much to see to [View Full Entry]
