Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

Thursday, March 27, 2008 Acapulco Adventure Category: Travel and Places This is a few months back when I wrote this along with some of my entries, please keep in mind the location, and date. *********************************************************************************** Typing this back in San Diego after my trip to Acapulco, Mexico. Anyway, so I completely thought we were leaving Thursday morning to Acapulco when in fact it was Wednesday night. I had just went to a model fitting in Del Mar at a designers house, was on my way back to my place to go out with my girlfriends [View Full Entry]

If Cuernevaca is the city of the Eternal Spring, and as many down here claim "the most beautiful and most forgotten city in all of Mexico", they must never have been to Acapulco. After a week of intense (and I say that with no exaggeration whatsoever) spanish classes, we all could use a break. Although the appeal of the sand and the sun would later turn out not as relaxing as expected, our itinerary had us headed to Acapulco, Mexico for the weekend. After a day of daunting and what seemed like never ending classes, we all got ready to get [View Full Entry]

Along with a couple of people from Angela's Hostel we took the bus to Acapulco which was a 5 hour ride. We proved that we are hardcore backpackers by walking to the bus station in the heat of the midday sun. On hindsight this was probably not the best idea as it was really hot and by the end of it Kiki's face was red like a tomato for about an hour. Luckily it was not a sunburn but a case of over heating. In fact it was so hot that the glue which held Monia's trekking shoes together started melting [View Full Entry]

Acapulco...town of chickens on the beach! I have to admit its not my favorite place. By a long shot! Its extremely humid for one! But more importantly its dirty, its ugly, its polluted and there is FAR too much traffic! Even the old town doesnt have that much charm...the zocalo is reasonable but the markets are horrible, its bad enough being harssed to buy something at every step but having it done in English really irritates me! If I were a rich cruise ship passenger and stopped off there, or Id flown all the way from Europe for the holiday of [View Full Entry]

We were well-situated to watch the eclipse on the 20th. It was wonderful to see it from Acapulco! We spent our last full day in Acapulco exploring the "new" part of the city and some of the oldest. We walked part of the main Acapulco beach, where the high rise hotels are, and Spring Break happens. The beaches were crowded in spots and open in others. There were para-sailing outfits all along the beach. We next visted the old zocalo (or town square), church, and fort, passing by the cruise ship dock. I made one last call, still trying to locate [View Full Entry]

Our new beach
Our hotel is to the left on the beach
Well, we corrected our mistake, and took a bus back to Acapulco yesterday. We are staying at a "beach resort" in the faded grandeur of old Acapulco...we are right on a little beach, in a hotel that has seen better days, but is clean and has a pool, beach chairs (although the Italian Canadians who are here en masse snag most of them at sunrise) and a beautiful view. We are among the youngest people here.....and the least tan...and I mean tan as in leather.... We walked up the hills above the hotel this morning and saw some abandoned properties and [View Full Entry]

MEXICO Puerto Chiapas is at the southern-most point of Mexico and is the gateway to Guatemala. It is an area rich in history, political turmoil and a big coffee growing region. The port has been recently renovated and has a large thatched-roof pyramid to reflect the Mayan heritage of the area along with a restaurant and swimming pool exclusively for cruise passenger usage. We were greeted at the pier with music and dancers in native costume. Izapa is a 30 minute drive from the port and is the site of ancient ruins. It is believed to be where the sacred Mayan [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]

Del admiring Acapulco as we approach the Bay
We anchored in the Acapulco harbour early in the morning on the third day of the cruise. We only had a few hours there so to maximize our time we decided to take “ The City Tour plus the Cliff Divers” , ( an organized tour for $58.00 each , for 4 hours in “air-con” motor coach ….. and thank goodness for that …. it was about 90 degrees and SUNNY). Most of Acapulco is just another little Mexican city, (… mind you, there are MANY new condo developments on the go on every hillside) … but the setting is spectacular, [View Full Entry]

Hello All We've been having some more fun since we spoke to you last, staying in Taxco, an old silver mining town in the mountains south of Mexico city. Highlights included browsing all the silver shops which brought out the magpie in both of us. Si was on the verge of buying a silver topped walking stick when I found him, but I reminded him he wouldn't have much use for it having forgotten to pack his tap shoes. We also had a great trip to the Grutas de Cacahuamilpa, gigantic caves with thousands of years worth of build up of [View Full Entry]
