Monday, May 18, 2009 Gaspé, Quebec, Canada THIS WAS NOT A GOOD DAY - I am only sending this to you because you will understand when I describe it by saying that one of the ladies on our whale watching tour today put it “This ranks right up there with having a root canal”. And so it was… That really was a pretty good description of how bad it actually was. After they were 45 minutes late clearing us for customs and immigration, we had to take a tender into shore. I should have gotten the clue then that we were in for a rotten day - but I had great hope! What a fool!! One we got off the tender, we were directed to a school bus and they said it would be a 45 ... read more

I just want to share some photos we took while visiting the Matapedia Valley and the Baie-des-Chaleurs area of the Gaspé Peninsula at the beginning of October. The Notre Dame Mountains are an extension of the Appalachians that stretch from Sherbrooke to the tip of the Gaspé Peninsula in the province of Quebec.... read more

This last August, my grandson, James and I spent a week at a cottage owned by a friend of mine. The cottage is in my home village of Pointe-A-La-Garde, and has a view of the Baie des Chaleurs, the peninsula which gives the village its name and the New Brunswick coast. We were lucky to be there at the time of the full moon and got some great photos. I wanted to share some of them with you all.... read more

As hard as it was to leave the beautiful Forillon National Park, we packed our things and left for Gaspésie National Park. We drove along the coast and mountains of the Gaspé Peninsula. That was an incredible drive. There was alot of super high hlls, clffs with water falls coming out of them and the gorgeous St-Laurence beside us all the time. Once we got into the park, we tried to find the place where we were suppose to pay for the camping and the entrance fee, but there was no one there. We had to take a 7 km dirt road, which you think it would be quick, but it was super steep the whole way. It drove us to about 600 meters high (thanx GPS lol). There was mountains all around us and we ... read more

Our first stop on the trip was the spectacular and HUGE Percé Rock. Too bad for us that the tide was in and we couldn't walk out to really appreciate the grandure of it. We parked at a cheap motel and walked along the beach, where we made sure to touch the Atlantic Ocean (or the closest thing to the Atlantic ocean)! The pictures really don't do it justice, it is quite massive and very cool looking. There used to be a second hole, but it collapsed. That must have been quite the scene! After taking our pictures with the rock, we headed out to see another interesting rock formation. A crevass at the top of the hill overlooking the Perce area. It was a nice hike to get down to the creavass, about 30 minutes ... read more

This region of Quebec is most dear to my heart because it is where I was born. I hail from a very small village called Pointe-à-la-Garde. It is at the entrance to the Baie des Chaleurs,(roughly translated as Bay of Heat), so named by Jaques Cartier in 1534 as he sailed into said bay, probably on July 15th. Since it the only real hot day we have! (not!) The trip around the peninsula, is a must, going from Ste. Flavie around the north shore through Matane, Ste. Anne des Monts, etc. to Forillon National Park, to Gaspé and of course to the gem of the peninsula, Percé and Percé Rock. Then the fishing and tourist towns along the bay, Paspébiac, New Carlisle, Carleton etc, all have many interesting and sometimes breathtaking vistas. Speaking of vistas, the ... read more

Un spot ... read more
