With only one month left in Gaspéspie, things are looking very bright. I returned yesterday from the Mi-Project, and the weekend was spent together with group discussing every possible aspect of the program. We stayed at a camp an hour away, and luckily had great weather with the expection of a little rain. It was really productive, and the entire first day was devoted to counterpart relationships. Each pair of counterparts evaluated eachother and we had the chance to have a really open, honest conversation. This was great! I was able to tell Sadio her strengths and weaknesses and what I needed from her and she did the same for me. As we were doing this, I came to the realization that one reason I've been having such a hard time adapting is because of a ... read more

Salut! I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather! It has been sunny and warm here for the last couple of weeks, and today Sadio said that it was the same temperature here as in Mali! A lot has happened in the last couple of weeks, but I'm going to try and recount it all... 1. My Work Project: We have been working fulltime in the B&B because Gérald's truck and ATV both brokedown preventing us from working in the woods. They are both up and running now, and I think we are going to start collecting wood again on Thursday. Sadio and I are workking really well together, we can clean the whole B&B in about 3 hours now! Last week my host parents and I had a sit down talk as to how things ... read more

I ni sogoma! I can't really remember where I left off with my last entry, but I'll just recap the last week. (It seems really funny to be writing this in English, I feel like I'm almost translating everything from French!) Luckily, after the attack of moquites I experienced while working in the woods for the first half of last week, we stayed indoors on Thursday and Friday and worked in the 'Gite' (B&B). Ginette explained to me that normally they are completely booked all summer, but the last two years have slowed down quite a bit because of the recession. So, there are days when the gite is completely vacant or there is just one or two rooms filled (There are 5 rooms, max capacity 16 ppl). Normally on the days when we work in ... read more

Bonjour! Another week has gone by and I only have 2 months left in Canada. For the last two days I worked in the woods again with Gérald, and on the second day Sadio came as well. The work is very physical and challenging, and on the second days the bugs were particularly bad. After lunch we worked in the garden and by the end of the day I looked like I had the chicken pox! I have never had such bad bugbites and by the end of the day I was very discouraged. Luckily, Ginette invited me to come swimming with her and we drove to a nearby lake. The water was soo refreshing after being surrounded by a cloud of bugs all day. Today was our group education day, and we met in the ... read more

Well things have certainly calmed down since last week. Sadio and I have settled in with Ginette and Gerald who call us their 'new family'. Along with being part of the family comes many household chores, rules and responsibilities. Among those is the 1 hour a week computer time. It's rawwwther difficult following someone else's rules as I'm used to making my own. Hmmph. Thursday was my first official day of work, although I feel like I started working on the day I got here. Ginette showed us how to clean the 5 rooms in the B and B and we served breakfast at 8am. I have to admit I am a little dissapointed with my work placement, I was expecting something agriculture-related and was actually looking forward to doing something completely different and challenging. But ... read more

Hey Everyone! I ni swogoma? (Greetings and how are you in Bamabara, a Malian language) Unbelievably, it's only been one week since I met my Canada World Youth group in the Montréal airport. Since then I have been surrounded by a crazy whirlwind of activity and a rollercoaster of emotions. It all began on July 8th... After saying goodbye to my parents I met the other 8 Canadians in my exchange plus 9 others from the second CWY group. We waited in the P.E.Trudeau airport for 3 hours and acquainted ourselves with one another. Luckily, I wasn't the only one who wasn't a fracophone. In fact, there were a few people who didn't speak ANY French, a few with no English, and when the Malians arrived a few more who conversed with each other in Bambara. ... read more

... read more

Day 5. I've noticed signs around the area stating this is Gaspe's 475th birthday. I'm no geologist but I think it's older. Just my opinion. Today I decided I would stay put and just ride. I only got in 145km before the predicted afternoon showers arrived. I suppose I should have worn the full face today because rain drops hurt when they hit you at 100km/hr. Oh well, chalk it up to experience. I started out riding back around to the North side of the Bay and into Forillon National Park. I rode to the end of the road where there is a 3Km walking trail to the tip of Cap-Gaspe and on a nicer day with proper shoes I might have done it but I know from past experience riding boots are not hiking boots. ... read more

Day 4. 1917km I finally slept past sun up today so did'nt break camp till about 11am. After a quick stop at The Source for a fuse for my electric cooler I rejoined my traveling companion from the day before, HWY 132, and continued down the coast. The first couple hundred klicks were, as expected, reasonably flat running along the waters edge. I stopped at the IGA in Matane for some lunch supplies and a steak for dinner. After lunch is when it got interesting. The terrain started to roll and so did the road. Grades from nine to 15 degrees were the norm. I was glad to be driving a diesel for the torque. The only thing that would have been better is if it had the 6 speed stick behind it. I was excited ... read more
