A sort of rest day with lots to see in this historic capital of Canada. The only problem is that it is raining hard and that rain has continued all day. There have been amazing thunder storms and sheet lightning flashing all around. The city tour went ahead and our Ottowa Guide Jean did his best to tell us about the city and its past. It was a major trading place in the past and a massive canal was built to make the Lawrence river navigatable. They used to float wood down from here along the river and it would make its way back to England to be used in ship building. It was also a large paper manufacturer but now sadly has only one mill left. After the tour there was a quick break before ... read more

It had to happen! Someday our tour would have to end…and that was February. The determination of when the tour would end was budget based. When the money runs out, the tour would end. So we are back in Canada and settled in our new home city of Ottawa. So while the tour around the world has to end…our adventure continues…just in a different form! The budget we created for the tour was essentially four months and we were hoping to stretch it to at least six, with the sale of my car and some frugality. Well the car did not sell, and we arrived at a point where the end of the budget was in sight. So we made a tentative return plan and, once that was determined, it no longer made sense to sell ... read more

THE BASICS We succeeded in pulling out of Durham on Thursday, July 15, as scheduled. We missed the 8:00 target by 15 minutes, but we don't think that will jinx the whole trip. We arrived in Burlington VT in our usual RV fashion, taking 1 1/2 times as long as we had planned. Our four days and nights at the familiar campground were very pleasant, socializing with acquaintances, relaxing from the stresses of preparing for this trip. It was a nice transition. On Monday, we headed to Ottawa. We arrived in time to drive into the city after supper, and it is a lovely place. For the last two days, we have spent many hours in the city, walking and walking and seeing the sights. Tomorrow, we will head west. We know we will go on ... read more

I spent the day in Ottawa after making cinnamon buns at Larry's house. I thought Victoria had rain, Ottawa needs to build an Ark. We had a torrential downpour that was amazing. After 25 minutes it was done and it helped cool things down. There is a colourful market downtown and some great sightseeing. Tomorrow I may go to a couple of museums... read more

had a nice uneventful flight to Ottawa. The first leg to Calgary was fabulous. Clear blue skies all the way. I don't recall ever seeing the ground so clearly and cloud free on a flight before. And of course my camera was inaccessible in my backpack. The next flight I was over the wing and it was cloudy to boot. Ottawa is in the middle of a sweltering heat wave, I told Larry that he might find me asleep on the basement floor in the morning. I remember flying, being so bored and if you were lucky you a portable tape player and enough batteries to last the trip. NOW you have T.V. movies and music in the back of the seat in front of you, an Itouch and Zune and laptop with another 500 hours ... read more

Checked in online this morning and was happy to be able to move our seats from way back in row 35 up to row 12! It's really happening. One more sleep and we head west. The past couple of days have been fun as we have been preparing for our departure. Funny how doing laundry is not such a chore when you are packing! New camera has been purchased, iPods are getting loaded and suitcases are being filled. Pedicures were a welcome treat yesterday. After all a girl HAS to have pretty toes when traveling. And so...time to gather maps and organize things on the home front. Next blog entry will be from someplace other than home! ... read more

This coming Thursday my daughter Julia and I will be headed west to British Columbia to visit family in Quesnel. I've done the trip a number of times but have always flown the entire distance and always alone. (save for a trip 23 years ago with my then 15 month old son). Not this time! This time I have a great travel companion who loves adventure as much as I do. We fly from Ottawa to Vancouver and then it's road trip time! This is Julia's first trip to BC and I am so looking forward to sharing this with her. We have planned a route that will allow us time to visit and also time to explore. Our first few days will be spent in Vancouver where we will immerse ourselves in all the city ... read more

Tuesday 11.5.2010 day 209 Ottawa Valley Sunrise here is about 5am at this time of the year and it is very nice to see the sun come up and shine on the lake in the morning. Samuel D Champlain was French explore, navigator and map maker who explored much of Eastern Canada. In 1613 while exploring the Ottawa River he needed to bypass the rapids in the river. To do this he portaged through a chain of lakes including green Lake (now Astrolabe Lake the lake on our resort) it is believed that is was here that he left behind his Astrolabe. An Astrolabe is one of the oldest know navigational instruments used. In 1867, Edward Lee a 12 year old boy whose family lived on the property, found the Astrolabe while helping his father clear ... read more
