Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Courage North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver
“Be courageous,” Gabriel says to me, at three already deeply in love with words. He gives me a sidelong glance before plunging a forefinger into a bucket of fish roe, scarlet up to the knuckle. That is how our last morning began: a happy grandmother, standing on a wharf, modeling courage but not feeling brave. It has occurred to me that I am cutting myself ruthlessly adrift, after 35 years of non-stop mothering. I must have liked it, I tell myself, and the truth is I have, though not every single bit. So now that the last step-chick has flown the [View Full Entry]

Well, the last place I thought I would be going again was back to Canada...again. This time for only 3 days, and leaving Brett and his crutches to fend for himself in Bowen. But seems that is the way lawyers and insurance companies work... nevermind that I had just been there a month and half ago.... anyways, we will just leave it at that, and it is all sorted now (do you like my aussie talk?), so was worth it to get it all over with 4 years later. It was a whirlwind 3 days, with it taking just as long [View Full Entry]

Well, today's the day! It is 10am in the morning and we will be heading to the airport in about 2 hours time. We spent last night getting all of our stuff together which was QUITE the ordeal but managed to get all we needed and under the maximum baggage weight haha. Our flight leaves at 4pm but we have to get there three hours early for check-in so it will feel like lots of waiting! Not much to report yet of course except that later today it all begins! Be sure to check out my blog as I update [View Full Entry]

A fun day trip with Tina and Lachlan at Grouse Mountain, about an hour and a half from home. We will definitely come back during the winter, but the summer activities included some nice walks, chairlift action, some mediocre films about the mountain's history and a couple of very cute grizzly bears. Well, I suppose the countdown is on. The shots are done, the bags are being brought out of storage and I'm getting my traveling legs back under me. This is the first travel blog I've written in about 2 and a half years. Seems like just yesterday that I arrived home from a wonderful tour, now I'm set to head back at it. Some familiar places on the itinerary (Ko Tao, Krabi, Bangkok), but plenty of new potential destinations lie ahead (Ko Phi Phi, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia). The difference this time is that I'm dragging two friends along for the ride, [View Full Entry]

Dear Family and Friends, My smart son Derek has just set me up with this blog on my brand new notebook computer and it is coming with me on our travels. You don't have to read my drival but I have put your name down to receive my ramblings as I ramble. I have caught a nasty chest bug from "other son" James and while I've coped with the day to day here I am not in good form. Thank god for such riveting tennis and catching up with Derek and his friends. So I am looking forward to leaving all [View Full Entry]
