Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Soooooooooooooooooo, three wonderful days later and my blog gets another entry. As most of you know, I arrived safely, spending my first days with the wonderful mr. Daniel Woods. While visiting stanley park, I spotted my first bald eagle. Right now, Vancouver is swamped with tourists. It's not only summertime, a three-day national holiday is luring tourists and travelers from all around to join the celebrations. Pretty festive here, I can tell ya! On Sunday, Timo and I visited the famous suspension bridge (not for those with a fear of hights). You'd think it would be a pretty steady bri [View Full Entry]

Hi everybody! So, finally, I touched down in Vancouver, Canada, ready for a few months packed with adventure. Just wanted everyone to know I'm safe and fine, even though it was a close call. When trying to find my seat in the airplane headed from London to vancouver, there was a little mix-up. My seat was dubble booked, as was the seat of the person next to me, and two men, both in white long dresses with purple turbans, requiered answers when to found us in their seats. My brain immediately began to connect the dots of the CNN broadcatsing of [View Full Entry]

There have been many changes since my last blog entry. I’m back at work, for one thing. Lao-puo Suzanne’s generous support of a Cambodian orphanage (she pays the rent for a high school) was dipping into my beer money, so I had to do something about that. I don’t begrudge a penny. Were it not for her efforts, the young orphaned girls, and some of the boys, would be hooking, and the rest of the boys would be begging. I’m back in my old job, with the provincial Ministry of Housing and Social Development. Things were better when we were the [View Full Entry]

Hello from another amazing country in the world: Canada!! Just about 5 short weeks after returning from a year in Australia, I'm back to being an international traveler!! So here I am in British Columbia, Canada!! The weather has been unseasonably hot (in the 90s), which makes it hard to do any intense hiking or outdoor activity! The flight from Chicago was only about 4 hours and I arrived in Vancouver around 10am on Monday. My mom and I spent the day walking around farmers markets, parks, and laying on the beach in the hot, hot sun. We ate at a [View Full Entry]

Trip planning usually starts with D sitting at his computer, searching possibilities. However this trip had been rumbling around in D's mind for many years. He'd often thought that attempting to trace the history and route of his ancestors would be a good excuse to travel to places he might not go otherwise. This is to be that trip. A trip to trace the path of the V's that came before him. He only knows for certain that his grandfather W.V. was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Beyond that he has only his research and a lot of speculation. The Vs [View Full Entry]

Hello! So we've sadly finished our round the world travels and have finally touched down in Vancouver. We are absolutely exhausted!!! The last 5 months have absolutely killed us and we need a holiday for our holiday - don't get us wrong we had a myriad amazing experiences but after almost half a year of sleeping in hostels with up to 20 other smelly backpackers, living on bread and jam for days at a time, trying to learn almost 20 new languages, and having no income on which to live, it becomes extremely tiring and most of all stressful. But the [View Full Entry]

Day 8 - Thursday would be a much easier day than yesterday. Still in Deep Cove, I walked the dogs with Kelly in the morning and when we got back the house cleaners were there working hard. They were a young girl-power group of cleaners. Kelly said it was a family business run by Polish immigrants. While they were cleaning, Kelly and I went to pick up Cohen from his Summer School and had lunch at the Marina Grill just by the Second Narrows bridge in North Vancouver. The restaurant is located in an industrial area next to the water, so [View Full Entry]

Day 7 - Thursday was another big day of Adventure. Little did I know that the training I was doing for the past 2 days with Kelly was actually preparing me for the Big Kahuna! That is, climbing up Grouse Mountain in Vancouver. It's called the Grouse Grind for good reason. It's a tough, steep, uphill hike. It's definitely not for the fainthearted as the signs at the start of the trail warn you. So how did this all happen? Well Kelly casually mentioned the day before, "Oh, we can climb up Grouse Mountain in the morning and have a Latte [View Full Entry]
