We had already sent our suitcases for transfer. It would be ready to be picked up when we land. We woke up around 6 am in the morning. The ship was pulling into the port as we woke up. Nice thing is that they allocate departure time from the ship based on your flight timings. Since Pranav’s flight was earlier (around 1:45 PM), he had a departure time of 8:45 am compared to ours at 9:20 am. We decided to hook up with Pranav once we reached the airport. We freshened and had our last big meal, breakfast on the ship. Interesting fact is that the Ship was planning to leave around 4 PM that evening back to Whittier. The workers there get minimum break, I guess. We did notice that some of the ship’s crew ... read more

We had booked to do one of those Escape Room challenges, which we enjoyed last year in New York (see ) despite narrowly failing to finish it. It was booked at midday, so we had a leisurely morning and walk there. It was back on the border of the area where things had started to get rough when we had walked there the other day (see ). In fact the world’s thinnest building and the gate to China Town were just down the road from where we were going. Sadly, we failed to complete the escape again and were not even close this time as we had apparently only completed about two thirds. It only allowed 45 minutes, which seemed impossible. Apparently some other groups had been able to complete it in under 30 minutes, but ... read more

I woke up early for no apparent reason, so I thought I might as well get up and walk over to Stanley Park again for some early morning pictures looking back at Vancouver. Once I had got my photos and it was getting light, it was a really nice walk back along the water-front in the peace and quiet, with a fantastic view of the sunrise and the high-rise buildings of Vancouver. My son and I had decided that we would go to the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, which had been recommended. It was only a short drive over the Lion Gate Bridge (a green Golden Gate Bridge), which we had cycled under during our Stanley Park circuit (see ), and then just a little way into North Vancouver. The car-park was full so we needed ... read more

Whilst the weather got off to a ropy start, it quickly changed and the sun came out, so the others decided that the day should be designated a pool day. That gave me an opportunity to have a look around Downtown Vancouver, Gastown and the Waterfront. It was a very strange day, as it seemed like I started the day in New York, then I went to Paris and then I ended-up in Sydney. Downtown (New York) is the modern area, based around the usual North American grid layout. There are some famous hotels, lots of tall office buildings, the Vancouver Central Library and a Cathedral. At the bottom end is the Rogers Stadium (although I am not sure if this is called the Rogers Stadium or the British Columbia Place Stadium - it seems to ... read more

We discovered last night that the hotel had some cycles that we can use for two hours for no cost. We had been planning to go to Stanley Park, which is very near to the hotel, and cycling seemed like an excellent way to see it. There were only three cycles available at first so we did something else for what while and when we went back, perfect, there were four. The park is a lot bigger than we were expecting and the cycle route around the perimeter is about 12km. By the time we had cycled round with stops at the totem-poles, for some photos and for a quick brunch, it was just about two hours on the nail. It worked really well cycling in the park as there were separate paths for pedestrians, cyclists ... read more

A virtual bungee-jump (see ) is all very well, but in Whistler we spotted that there is an opportunity for the real thing. After a lot of “Shall I, shan’t I”, I eventually decided that I shall and so I booked it on line - I know that I would regret it if I didn’t take the opportunity whilst I could. There were spaces at 11.30am. It was, sadly, our last day in Whistler so we checked out of the hotel and headed to where the jumps take place, which, conveniently, was on the way to Vancouver, where we were heading to next. It meant driving a couple of miles up a rough and bumpy dirt-track so we all felt ill even before any bungee-jumping. The jump site was a bridge high over a river, which ... read more

Saturday Aug 18 We had a great night’s sleep and a leisurely breakfast. Around 11:30, we got on the Skytrain and headed downtown to the waterfront. Far better than taking the car, maybe we’ll get to like the Ottawa light rail after it begins operation in December? The Star Princess was waiting for us and we began the slow process of getting on board. Three large cruise ships were leaving today, and US Customs computers were down, causing a bit of a wait. Against all rules, Ferdy packed a bottle of Scotch in his suitcase, which turned out to be no problem, our suitcases were delivered to our room intact, and with our booze. It wasn’t long before we got to meet our Australian friends on board and do some catching up. Departure was cool against ... read more

This trip is going to be like none other that we have taken before. The biggest reason for that, is that we have two additional passengers that we have never taken on one of our voyages. It happened quite by accident a number of months ago. We were driving Talia and Jack home from school one day and the conversation came around to holidays. Jack said, “ Grandpa, now that Talia and I are older do you think we could go on one of your special trips with you and grandma? “ And that’s where it all started. After talking things over with their parents, it was decided that they were old enough to come away with us and we started looking for someplace to go that we thought they would enjoy. With the help of ... read more

Our final day in Vancouver began with a clear view over the city, the ships waiting to berth to the mountains followed by breakfast at Al’s. A spot of washing and ironing before lunch with ex-students, Adrienne and Tricia, which Adrienne had organised. Sleep followed. Well rested, it was onto dinner with Robert and Al at an Indian restaurant before final packing, ready for our journey to Everett tomorrow. Al and Robert have been wonderful to us.
