Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Day 8 - Thursday would be a much easier day than yesterday. Still in Deep Cove, I walked the dogs with Kelly in the morning and when we got back the house cleaners were there working hard. They were a young girl-power group of cleaners. Kelly said it was a family business run by Polish immigrants. While they were cleaning, Kelly and I went to pick up Cohen from his Summer School and had lunch at the Marina Grill just by the Second Narrows bridge in North Vancouver. The restaurant is located in an industrial area next to the water, so [View Full Entry]

Day 7 - Thursday was another big day of Adventure. Little did I know that the training I was doing for the past 2 days with Kelly was actually preparing me for the Big Kahuna! That is, climbing up Grouse Mountain in Vancouver. It's called the Grouse Grind for good reason. It's a tough, steep, uphill hike. It's definitely not for the fainthearted as the signs at the start of the trail warn you. So how did this all happen? Well Kelly casually mentioned the day before, "Oh, we can climb up Grouse Mountain in the morning and have a Latte [View Full Entry]

Saturday night we all headed to a restaurant overlooking the water on Granville Island called Sandbar. There was quite a group of us—A. and L., L’s brother-in-law and his partner, a few of A’s friends. But I didn’t feel at all like the odd person out—they were all incredibly friendly and fun to be around. I only ordered a few tapas, but the food was delicious. We ended up inching our way onto a table in the upstairs bar occupied by three guys because the wait for a table on the patio was a good two hours. One of the guys [View Full Entry]

After our weekend away at Hamilton Island, it was time for me to head back to Canada for a whirlwind 10 day trip, and leave Brett here to continue working on the skatepark. Not exactly what we had planned but then again, we never really make plans that far in advance anymore! The journey from Bowen to Vancouver, involved flying out of Proserpine which is a small little airport that is used as the entry point for most people coming to the Whitsunday Islands by air. It was a tiny little airport where the waiting room was actually outside in a [View Full Entry]

Day 5 - Monday was a glorious day in Deep Cove! Deep blue skies and a slight wind. Great for some watersports. So Aunt Kelly and I took out the 2 man outrigger canoe for a spin. My outrigger experience in Australia put me in good stead to paddle with her. She is a great paddler and said that I was doing pretty well. After a spot of lunch out on the deck, Kelly took me up to Corey rock, which is part of the Baden Powell walk. It is a great 45 minute walk each way which goes through the [View Full Entry]

My late grandfather was a photographer in Penang, Malaysia and this is their photo studio which was painted by an artist.
Today is Sunday. I drove for the first time on the other side of the road today. It was a bit of a funny feeling, but I got to my destination unscathed. I had to drive my grandmother to Church this morning. It's only about 5 minutes away, but still involved a few turns that needed to be negotiated. It's just a one off thing as my uncle couldn't do it today, so I'm off the hook for the rest of the trip. Gee Chek (2nd Uncle) took us all out for Yum Cha lunch which was quite nice, and in [View Full Entry]

My time in Vancouver so far has felt very much like a relaxed episode of Sex and the City. L. and I spent yesterday morning getting massages that A. treated us to while she ran errands. Then we shopped at little boutiques and vintage stores. My massage was given by a Chinese woman. She worked her butt off trying to get my shoulders, neck and back to relax and kept asking if she was hurting me because she was putting so much pressure on them. Today I’m so sore I feel as if I spent yesterday doing a major upper body [View Full Entry]

Arrived in Vancouver after a long flight sat next to a fat Vicky Pollard-alike, whose bulge encroached onto my seat space, and whose "I was like, yeah, and she was like, no" wittering drove me properly insane. I am couch surfing with a guy named Ben and his girlfriend Jess, who turn out to be very cool people, who immediately made me feel welcome. On arrival I have a cold beer thrust into my hand, a meal cooked for me, and then we are off out to The Railway club, where Jess' brother-in-law is playing in a ska band. A great [View Full Entry]
