We did the unashamed touristy thing today. We had vouchers for a hop-on-off bus and the Vancouver tower bundled in with the holiday, and so made full use. Walking from China town to Gas town was a wake up call, as this is the main druggie area. We kept our head down and walked with purpose!! After the tower, we used the bus to see Stanley Park and Granville island. Generally, very impressed by Vancouver, very green, clean and airy. Weather was gorgeous and we made a valiant attempt to boost ice cream sales within the city significantly. The hotel is opposite the main sports arena, see photo. Kate dragged me off to a footy match the in the evening!! Vancouver beat Montreal 2 - 1 in an exciting match, with all the goals at our ... read more

We've just completed two days on the choo choo train, Rocky Mountaineer!! First day was Kate's birthday and so the ritual opening of cards happened at 7am before our transfer to the choo choo station!! As Craig R-H would say it was A-Mazing!! We had blue skies all the way, magnificent views and gorgeous food!! The first day was high mountain passes, whereas the 2nd day was a mixture of ravines and cliff hugging tracks, and the more sedate flood plains of the Frazer River. I thought I'd be bored after an hour, I was enthralled for 2 days!! During the journey we saw bears, elks, eagles, ospreys, etc!! Were there downsides, i guess. Firstly, the open bar was wasted on Kate and I, although some of our fellow travellers made up for us!! Secondly, the ... read more

It worked perfectly as Jim was still suffering with a painful back but once in Victoria he managed to get out for a walk in the mornings. Then in the afternoon I was able to visit the Museum of ... read more

Days 158 to 165 of 165 Yes, these are the last few days of an incredible 6 months of travel. We are starting to write this blog whilst in the middle of our time in Vancouver in the hope that we can finish it just before or shortly after we arrive home, due in 2 days. As we said in the previous blog we have arrived in Vancouver to around 6°C, and rain - rain forecast for most of our time here. But, regrettably no snow, not here at ground level. We are told that this weather is not normal for Vancouver. This time last year the temps were around the 20s, but despite the rain and cool the place is like an English spring with flowers out everywhere - daffodils, forsythia, crocus, tulips budding, early ... read more

I flew from San Salvador to Mexico City. There I had to wait a couple of hours. Then I flew into Toronto, where I almost missed my flight because the man at the border check thought I needed a visitors VISA as well as a work permit and sent me to the immigration office where I had to wait for a very long time in the line. I would have missed my flight if it wasn't delayed and if I didn't ask the security at the luggage check to skip the (insanely long!) line. So just in time I got on the plane to Vancouver. Another 5 hours in the plane. I didn't sleep at all, because.. I just can't sleep in airplanes. I just can't sit up straight and sleep. Even when I try, and ... read more

Today was a rather relaxed day, we went and did some souvenir shopping and then headed off to Capilano Bridge for a few hours of wandering around there. A lot of the pictures from the day revolve around that. After we got done at Capilano we went to the Hard Rock Cafe for Angie so she could get a guitar pin for her collection. I then went in search of Poutine, for those of you unfamiliar with this dish it is Crispy Fries topped with Cheese Curds and then drowned in brown gravy. I had heard of this place called Mean Poutine while I was up there and went off in search of it. I found it and I was not disappointed and it made for a great lunch. Jennifer and I each tried a different ... read more
