Wednesday, August 17th, 2016 Day 15: Vancouver, British Columbia – Learning to ride a bike again! Today marked the end of our Alaskan cruise. Since our flight was not till the late evening, we still had a full day to explore Vancouver. Renata and I decided to check out Stanley Park. Stanley Park, is an enormous park in the middle of downtown Vancouver. Since it is a large park, we decided to rent some bikes to travel around the seawall. We had not ridden bicycles in years, so it took a while to get accustomed to riding them. The Vancouver seawall, is the world’s longest uninterrupted waterfront path. Along the way we passed a bunch of totem poles, Brockton Point lighthouse, the ‘girl in a wetsuit’ sculpture, the Lions Gate Bridge, and Siwash Rock. The whole ... read more

Geo: 49.2605, -123.114Making the most of having facilities to stretch out in rather than a cramped tent, we spent the morning relaxing - swimming, enjoying the hot tub, watching the Olympics and catching up on some reading. Then, lunch packed, we decided that we needed a little slice of home and so it was cycling time! We walked through the city in the blazing sunshine, enjoying the cleanliness and lack of crowding on the streets, and hired bikes at the entrance to Stanley Park - a vast rainforest just outside the heart of downtown and another reason this place is so appealing to live. We took the bikes around the sea wall, a 22km long barrier that separates the city from the sea and that is laid out perfectly for people to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle, ... read more

Geo: 49.2605, -123.114After waking early (blame the camping body clock) I headed out for a morning run as the city was beginning to wake. I saw huge cruise ships down on the dock as a ran along the Canadian way, the boards on the floor separated out into provinces, their capitals labelled along with major towns. After breakfast, we walked from downtown over to Granville Island, one of most popular areas of Vancouver to visit. We could have got one of the little tug-boat-style ferries that take you from downtown, over the river to the island. However, we decided to walk and so took the traffic bridge up and over, with sweeping views of the city and the river beyond. The only problem with the road bridge is that we walked straight over Granville Island, and kept ... read more

Geo: 49.2605, -123.114Today was mostly nondescript, apart, of course for the incredible scenery we drove through which is a given here. Mountains, lakes and rivers capped our adventure through the Rockies beautifully and we stopped off for the obligatory photo stops on the way back to Vancouver. We did stop for a rest stop Hope, BC, which is where Rambo was filmed and the boys on the trip took great delight in the fact that we stopped the minibus in the exact spot where Rambo was picked up by the sheriff. There was an opportunity to take a photo of yourself in one of those 'face in the hole' displays where you could make yourself look like Rambo. The boys practised their best angry faces until it was time to get back on the bus. After ... read more

Wednesday, August 10th, 2016 Day 8: Vancouver, British Columbia - All aboard... The next morning, during breakfast I found out that our Mom was worried and frantically calling everyone the night before to see if Renata and I came back from the party. She did not even bother to check our room. She only realized, we were sound asleep when my uncle heard me coughing in the night. Oh! The joys of going on vacation with your parents! Today is the beginning of our Alaskan cruise. With our bags pact, we made our way to the Vancouver Waterfront to board our cruise ship, the Holland American Volendam. After going through customs and getting our luggage checked in, a couple of us headed to a nearby Japa Dog stand that my brother, Brennan discovered on our way ... read more

Tuesday, August 9th, 2016 Day 7: Vancouver, British Columbia - This Bridge is making me dizzy! Today, my sister, Renata and I decided to visit the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park. The Capilano Suspension Bridge is a 140 meter long suspension bridge that crosses the Capilano River. Definitely, not for those afraid of heights! When we first arrived at Capilano we were greeting by a large collection of totem poles including a longhouse and a welcome totem pole. We learned about its unique history by taking a history tour. Did you know that Capilano is the anglicized name of Kai’palano, which means “beautiful river”? Kia’palano, was also the name of a great Squamish Chief who lived in the area during the early 1800s. After the history tour it was time to cross the bridge. As the bridge ... read more

Monday, August 8th, 2016 Day 6: Vancouver, British Columbia - It's time to Grind! Today we are off to burn off the calories from the two days of stuffing ourselves with food from the wedding and the family picnic. We are going to attempt the Grouse Grind! The Grouse Grind is “Nature’s version” of the stair master. With a length of 2.9 kilometers, an elevation gain of 853 metres, and a total of 2, 830 stairs, this trail is a challenge in itself. It was an exhausting hike and at times I thought it would never end. When we finally reached the finish line we were rewarded with an incredible view of Vancouver from the top of Grouse Mountain. After grabbing a quick bite to eat we headed off to explore. We first came across a ... read more

Friday, August 5th, 2016 Day 3: Vancouver, British Columbia: Finding a friend, glamorous gardens, and fresh fish! Today, Renata and I are incredibly excited to meet our friend Stephanie in downtown, Vancouver. It has been over 15 years since we've last seen each other. To get to Vancouver from our accommodation in Surrey, we needed to drive 10-minute to Surrey Central station plus take a 45 min train ride. Our accommodation was definitely not in an ideal location! We met Steph for lunch at a sushi restaurant in the mall near her workplace. We decided to eat outside, which was probably not a good idea because we were swarmed by bees. It's so weird! There is a bee shortage in Toronto but it seemed like there were more than enough bees to annoy us in Vancouver. ... read more

Day 1: Toronto, Ontario to Vancouver, British Columbia- The Adventure begins! The day has final arrived. After a year of planning my cousin, Ryan and his fiancé, Petrina, are getting married! My whole family is flying to Vancouver to celebrate the upcoming nuptials. Following the wedding, my family and a few relatives are heading on a weeklong cruise to the land of the midnight sun, Alaska. I can't wait! We arrived in Vancouver late Wednesday evening and took a taxi to our AirBnB accommodation in Surrey, BC. Although incredibly spacious, our accommodation was inconveniently located. Therefore, tomorrow, my family is going to rent a car to take us around.... read more
