We rode the 6km from our hotel in Sidney to the Swartz Ferry Terminal in a quick 20 minutes, plenty of time to buy our tickets and put the bikes on board. The ferry is much bigger then the one that we caught from Seattle to Victoria and much cheaper too at only $18.
We are visiting Edna today. Edna is the sister of Jeff's mother-in-law and lives in Surrey. We check the distance from the Tsanwassen Ferry terminal to Edna's place and back to Richmond where we are staying tonight and are quite shocked to find it's 90kms. Not something we were expecting.
We realise that this is the same Surrey that we rode through on our first riding day of the trip. The ride is via a different route than we took that first day. We end up on a dyke wall where there used to be a vibrant oyster industry. Unfortunately human pollution in the late 20th century contaminated the water and the area couldn't be used to harvest oysters anymore. At the time of closing down there were over 2 million oyster left at the farm!
Before getting to Edna's we stopped for lunch.
I also had been without a hair cut for about 2 months and felt like a long haired hippy so I got a haircut at our lunch stop as well. There hadn't been as much hair on the barber floor since I was about 40.
We arrived at Edna's at about 2pm. We had a wonderful visit. For those that know Anne (Edna's sister in Australia) their characteristics are remarkably similar and some of the photos on display could easily be confused for Anne. Edna is an avid quilter and her home is full of examples of her work hanging on the walls.
We left at about 3:30pm and had about 50kms to travel. The trip back was not difficult, but was a little complicated. It's always easy to navigate on the highways, some days we didn't need to make a turn all day, but when navigating through the city you need to constantly check Google Maps. We ended up on the opposite side of the river than we rode out on the first day out of Vancouver. The riding was so much easier - we could have saved hours on that first day!
We were meant
to meet Tom's niece, Siobhan, for dinner at 6pm but we were running late and didn't get to our Vancouver AirBnB until 7pm. We all showered and changed as quick as we could and headed out to dinner at about 8pm. Vietnamese was the choice for the evening and we were all extremely hungry after a big day riding.
Tomorrow is our last full day in Canada. Tom, Jeff and I are hiring a rental car and driving up to Whistler for the day. The forecast is for rain but we're going regardless. Graeme is heading off to the Aquarium where he has a work contact and will be given the red carpet treatment while there.
It's all coming to a head, only two sleeps left.
