Thursday, Aug 30, 2007 We awoke at 2:45 am to get ready and leave for Calgary at 3:15 am. We got away by 3:25 and drove at a rate of 120 k/h all the way to Calgary, arriving at the airport parking lot at 5:35. Checking thru was a fast and easy with our pre-printed boarding passes. Rose failed the security scan. She had unintentionally left a small pair of pointed manicure scissors in her purse that were confiscated. Flights were on time and very pleasant. The bigger plane floated into Vancouver in clear skies. The smaller prop-driven plane took 12 minutes to fly over to Victoria. There we caught the air-porter bus to motels downtown and it was driven by Freddie Kruger who we learned graduated from driving pedicabs in the downtown bay area and ... read more

Unfortunately we didn't have anyone to take pictures this year (no one sat out!) so we have no racing photos! However, here are some post race photos. We got 1st place, Gorging Dragons got 2nd. Our "Go Kai Ikaika" Gorging girl blow up doll named Gigi was a huge sucess. Big thanks to our FCRCC Canadian friends for helping us fill the boat and to Gorging for the great party!!! I'll be seeing a few of the Canadians in Australia for IDBF worlds next month - will put my pics on my personal blog at www.travelblog.org/bloggers/blegs ET... read more

Day 3 - Victoria. Okay, here's a word of advice - DO NOT take the Clipper from Seattle to Victoria. It's a 3 hour long boat ride for $150. If you visit Seattle, go a few days to Port Angeles and take the 35 minute $35 ferry. You'll have more time seeing as you won't be wasting away on a damn boat for hours. Trust me. ANYWAY. We didn't know better so we rode the damn boat for 6 hours and got to stay in Victoria for only about 2.5. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice boat with good food. Just a dull ride. The package deal we did included a bus tour of the city and free entrance to Butchart Gardens. The gardens are absolutely beautiful. It was refreshing to see bright, vibrant flowers ... read more

written by Miss Wendy O Washington We said goodbye to the mountains, the altitude, the hot days and freezing nights and the scary hairy beasts, and headed West into Washington (the most North Westerly State). There was a sudden drop in temperature as we crossed the state line where the weather was wet and the skies stormy. Like the mountains, Washington escapes the whole convenience and mall epidemic infesting the mid West and East coast. It was refreshing to see bare highways and where downtown is where most shop, eat and drink. Seattle, home to Jimi Hendrix, Starbucks, Microsoft and Grunge, is a cool city bursting with character. But it doesn’t take long before you can’t help noticing the huge homeless and poverty problems they have. Maybe it’s just more concentrated, but it’s certainly the worst ... read more

We all woke up sweaty from sleeping in the steam room last night. We all took showers and headed out. Eileen headed for the Buchart Gardens and we planned to pick her up late. Amy and I headed to the Blue Fox Cafe for breakfast, it was delicious. After that, we decided to go to the Pacific Undersea Garden in the Victoria Harbour. The Garden was cool. We saw tons of cool fish. Then we saw a diver show, where the diver grabbed fish and showed us each one. We saw lots of huge crab and a huge octopus. Our book promised us there were seals in the garden and since we didn’t see any, I asked the gift shop and she pointed us to a Marina where you can feed seals. We quickly found ... read more

Well we finally made it up here, it took along journey but we did it. Getting here involved a 26 hour train journey from San Fransisco to Seattle, then a 4 hour coach journey across the border to Vancouver, then another 4 hour coach and ferry ride across to Vancouver island and the State capital of British Columbia, Victoria. o.k so it wasn't one right after another we stayed 2 nights in Seattle before continuing up to Victoria, but it was a pretty s@#ty couple of days with next to no sleep. The one bonus was that we saw a very little part of Seattle and it looked really nice and now i can't wait to get back there and explore it properly. Anyway, Victoria, it's pretty small for a state capital but does really offer ... read more

Sorry for the late entry, but it took us a while to get around to it. This is a family blog (which is why we are able to write a segment), and we expect some if not all of you to at least LOOK at it. This is a great tool to help us keep in touch with the intrepid travellers in Tanzania. Trust us, it really helps to share some words and photos when you're away for a long time. For non-family members who haven't yet read the profile, Bruce and Gerry Melville are retired teachers headed to Dodoma, Tanzania. They intend to volunteer as teachers for one, maybe two years. It is a very big step in their lives; we all support them and send them off with our well wishes. For this ... read more
