With a new sexagenarian in the family, it's definitely time for a blog entry and a few pics. So, Geraldine has turned 60!! Much like the Queen, Gerry enjoyed an official birthday and then held another celebration on the actual day. Last Sunday was the official birthday so we hosted a luncheon party for about 40 people. Our friends, Jill and Brian Polkinghorne, live just across the street from our compound in a nice big house that actually feels like a house so they agreed to allow the party to be held in their home. Richard and MJ will remember attending a potluck supper there on Easter Day. It was a really nice gathering. One of the high lights was a birthday gift of song to Gerry. One of Gerry’s teaching assistants along with her daughter ... read more

Well another Canada Day has come and gone and again the Melville clan was lucky enough to spend it together in one of the most beautiful locations around. Thanks to George an Sylvia we were all able to stay together for 5 days surrounding our country's birthday. There was a whopping 35 people, including all the little people who make for a very lively and entertaining time. We were missing some of the key people who usually partake in this annual weekend event. Bruce and Gerry are doing some amazing work with the children in Tanzania and Karen is working hard at then end of the year with her classes in London. We very much missed all three of you and were amazed that everyone else in the family was able to make this years festivities ... read more

Here is the first report on our recent trip to Africa. We left Vancouver on Feb 22 and returned on Mar 28th. After a stopover in Amsterdam we flew into Cape Town arriving late Sunday evening. We were met at the airport by Allison who then drove us back to Gatehouse where we occupied the guest suite. Allison has lived at Gatehouse for two years and we can see why she loves it there. It is a large property in a lovely area called Constantia. Gatehouse has a number of housing units on it so there is always someone around to visit with and a swimming pool to cool off in. Before going to bed Allison advised us of the planned activities for the next day. It was to be a relaxed day with a walk ... read more

We have been very busy settling in to our new home here in Milestone. It's hard to believe that it has been almost 9 months since moving to Saskatchewan and 6 since we moved into our house! The house really does seem like our home now, and we have worked hard to make it personal to us. The girls rooms are really special and between my work and my mother sending us things from B.C., they have both turned out to be really beautiful. Mary has started skating lessons at the rink here in Milestone, and after a somewhat rough start, she is really enjoying herself. On the last class before Christmas she finally decided that she could move her feet, and rather than crawling on the ice she actually skated! Christmas this year was wonderful. ... read more

Over the past several months we have taken a number pictures that have not found their way on-line but, nonetheless, we thought you might find interesting. So, here they are, a couple from England, a few from our recent holiday to the coast and a few from here in Dodoma. While our time in Bagamoyo was punctuated by me keeling over, it is a beautiful place and in hindsight provided a nice break. The other folks in the pictures are the Hookings family, Alistair, Vicki and their children Emma, Matthew and Jonathan. Vickie is the principal of our school and Alistair does everything else - teaching, building maintenance, substituting, childcare, etc.. Alistair and Vickie, who are from New Zealand, very kindly invited us and another teacher from the school to join them on their holiday. It ... read more

Hallo all, this past weekend Karen, Alison and Lynore went on "retreat" to Dancing Light Cottage on Salt Spring Island. It was a chance to get away and re-connect with each other. Dad and Mom had many words of wisdom and advice before we went away and this is a pictoral testimony to show them that we followed all of that advice...... In true Melville sisters style, we composed a poem (this time a haiku) to summarize our time together: Gentle deer come by Knitting, wine, scrabble and cheese Sisters' time, peaceful Most quoteable quote for the weekend comes from Karen, "The thing is...... sometimes, I can be quite intelligent". How about those track pants, Karen? P.S. 2006 Pinot Blanc (Salt Spring Vineyards) pairs very nicely with a pepper chevre (Salt Spring Island Cheese), a port ... read more

The month of September was an eventful one for us. We spent quite a bit of time over on Vancouver Island for some very exciting events. We were so pleased that Tobin (Mary Jo's son) has found such a wonderful woman to spend his life with, so on September 1st we attended their wedding. There was much planning and some fun family togetherness activities what with picking the flowers for the wedding, arranging the flowers for the tables and the chapel pews, and generally just getting the bride and groom ready for their big day. Luckily Allison (Mary Jo's daughter) was visiting from South Africa and she was able to organize everyone and everything that needed to be done. The wedding was held at U-Vic in the interfaith chapel and the reception was at the University ... read more

Hello everyone! What a year this has been! A year ago we discovered that we were expecting a second baby, and boy did things get busy quickly. As soon as Dad found out we were expecting, he started gently hinting that Saskatchewan was the place to be, and after a few months we decided he was right. We knew right from the beginning that things would need to change; our house in Edmonton needed a whole lot of work, and it was just too small for a family of 4. So after a lot of talking we decided to look into selling our house and making the move to Regina. It turned out that we had chosen the perfect time to sell in Edmonton, and we ended up selling our little home to a friend for ... read more

Their elongated trip for them was not what they had expected, but for me was a really fun surprise...it meant coffee dates, sight seeing, sharing meals, cooking together, eating ... read more
