We have been very busy settling in to our new home here in Milestone. It's hard to believe that it has been almost 9 months since moving to Saskatchewan and 6 since we moved into our house! The house really does seem like our home now, and we have worked hard to make it personal to us. The girls rooms are really special and between my work and my mother sending us things from B.C., they have both turned out to be really beautiful.
Mary has started skating lessons at the rink here in Milestone, and after a somewhat rough start, she is really enjoying herself. On the last class before Christmas she finally decided that she could move her feet, and rather than crawling on the ice she actually skated!
Christmas this year was wonderful. It is the first Christmas since Mary was born that we actually got to spend time in our own home! The whole season was wonderful, and Mary is finally at an age where she is starting to understand Christmas and make it really fun. I had no idea how great Christmas can be until I had a three year old in my home!
Decorating the Tree
One branch got very heavy with the ornaments that Mary piled on to it. We went to church with Dad in Regina on Christmas eve, it was pretty special to see Mary taking part in the service the way I used too when I was little. She chose to place a donkey in the creche and only broke it a little bit! Unfortunately Mary and Frances are not quite ready to last through a long service, so Ian ended up sitting with the girls and entertaining them for the last half of the service. Christmas morning Frances woke us up at around 8, and I had fun opening her stocking that I had filled the night before. At 9 I couldn't take it any more and went in to wake Mary up! We had a wonderful morning with a fantastic breakfast cooked by Ian, a long walk through the town, and a nap for the girls. After naptime it was time to get down to the nitty gritty, and we tackled the mound of presents beneath the tree. Mary was amazed every time Ian handed her another gift, and she said "thank you!" with every gift. About half way through her pile of presents, Mary sighed and said "No more presents, Mummy" before wandering
off to enjoy the gifts she had unwrapped. Ian and I took the opportunity to open the few gifts that were for us, and by time we were done Mary was ready for more. That evening we went over to Dad's house for supper. Michael's family was gathered as well, and we had a great time! The food was wonderful, the company was great, and the girls were relatively well behaved. Frances was given a new nickname by Michael's dad - "Frank the Tank." She is a very big girl.
Mary turned 3 on December 31st. We had big plans to have a birthday party for her that afternoon and all the 3 year olds in town had been invited. Unfortunately we woke to a loud rumbling crash, blue sparks outside our bedroom window and a loss of power. After a slightly panicky moment thinking the furnace exploded, we realized that our power lines had been knocked down. When the sun came up we were greeted by the sight of 3 smashed power poles on our corner with a jumble of power, phone and cable lines laying all over the place. It turned out that a semi was driving
Frances' contribution
Frances gave us all moral support as we decorated the tree. where he shouldn't have been and got caught up in the lines. By 11 o'clock that morning the temperature in the house was only 15 degrees, and after talking to some neighbours it looked unlikely that we would get power before that evening. So, we put up signs announcing that the party was cancelled, packed up the van and took off to Edmonton a day early to visit our friends. It turned out that our house was with power till after 7 that night, so it was just as well that we left.
This week marked the beginning of serious practices for the theatre group that I have joined. The Milestone Prairie Players have been putting on a dinner theatre for 24 years now, and I was eager to get involved when we moved here. I didn't expect to get a part in the play, but that's what happened. I'm incredibly excited, and already sick to my stomach with nerves! We are expected to be able to go scriptless this Sunday, and I'm having a terrible time remembering my lines. There's still time, but two and a half months seems dauntingly short if I think too hard!
