Since the first time I swam in the mediterrean I've loved it. The water is so salty that floating is effortless. We finally made it to the beach on Wed near Trabajar. Most of the sandy beaches are north of Beirut but this one had some small rocks prior to getting into the water. It was an idyllic place as witnessed by these pictures (although there's something wrong with the camera because it wasn't quite that blue!)... read more

It’s 7:15a now and I just got back from breakfast. As I approached my room I noticed that the carpet in front of my door was darker in that circular pattern that can only mean one thing - flooding. But wait - I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start with my arrival in Jordan 36 hours ago where I watched the carousel go ‘round and ‘round until it stopped without producing my cherished luggage. I filled out my “lost luggage” form like a good boy (along with 20 other people) and was assured that my bag would be on the next flight which occurs in **24 hours**. I had to work yesterday, and did so wearing what I flew in, REI hiking shorts and a silk button-down short-sleeved shirt. Could have been worse. My bags were ... read more

We are in the ancient city of Safed in the mountains above Galilee. At night we can see the twinkling lights on the shore on the other side near Tiberius. We stayed in the local hostel high up on a hill the first night, our hosts Ricky and Dovi we're so sweet and offered us beer, nuts, cold watermelon and conversation when we returned in the evening after a jaunt around the old city. It's much cooler here and very breeezy..at night it's balmy and we sleep really well. Today we explored the old city and the artist quarter. So many wonderful artists and the streets and old buildings are very inspiering for paintings. We have met many friendly people and wish we could stay in Safed longer. We may even come back during the month. ... read more

Shalom, y'all!! Hope everyone had a good holiday weekend. There was actually a July 4th celebration of sorts in Tel Aviv. I guess I'm not surprised since there are many expats and tourists from the States here. Anyway, closing in on the end of another week... my is the time flying! Have a great rest of the week... Monday, July 07, 2008 I imagine these writings will become fewer as my days become more routine. At least, they’ll be routine until this session ends and the next one begins. Most of the people I have met during this session are going home but more will take their place for the second session. Arlette is here for another week and then flies to the States to take care of business there before returning in late August. So, ... read more

Since this is my 3rd time being in Lebanon, I don't necessarily see all of the things that I might have observed the first time I was here. So I'm trying to see things as if it were my first time! *Half finished buildings; no matter where you are, in Beirut, one of the suburbs or the villages there are always half finished buildings. I'm assuming that the owner ran out of money but it could also be that they moved out of the country before it was completed. Its unfortunate because it can be such an eyesore on the countryside. When we were at Paul's villa on Sunday there was a half finished apartment building that had been sitting that way for 20 years! *Driving; even though there are lines on the roads they aren't ... read more

Today we finally received the Yeti. If I haven’t told you the story of the Yeti yet - let me elaborate. In the 24hour plane ride to Kuwait Mark and I did every activity that one can do on an Airplane. We watched movies, listened to music, read magazines, talked with other soldiers, went to the bathroom, walked around, etc. We kept looking at Sky Mall magazine and laughing at all of the ridiculous items that are for sale in the catalogue. We began to laugh at all of the things that we could have shipped to Iraq. A tiki bar for out CHU, a 20 foot wide inflatable movie screen, Yeti garden sculpture. We kept laughing at the Yeti and how ridiculous it was, who would buy that for their yard? Then we thought we ... read more

We were hot and grumpy when we arrived in Poryia. I took a dip in the pool and it was wonderful. It was very windy which was just about the most refreshing feeling after the heat of downtown Tiberius. Tiberius was very busy, we had a light meal of israeli salad, babaganush, kabobs, french fries and hummus. We met up once again with our new friends Frank and Maryann from Victor BC Canada who were staying here at Birdsong as well. They had already been to the sites here, one being to the Galilee boat exhibit and the hill of the beatitudes. After a light supper of sandwiches and tea we hit the sack in a cool and breezy room surrounded by immense sliding screen doors. I slept through the night comfortably. As the name ... read more

Nestled in the shadow of the Umayyad Mosque's eastern wall, 'The Fountain' is the most atmospheric of Damascus' traditional coffeehouses. This is where you can watch Abu Shady, the last of the hakawati (professional storytellers). Every evening around 19:00 (give or take an hour or two), Abu ... read more
