Hallo Zusammen, hier nun unser 1. ...und dann waren gestern ... read more

It was weird being in the cold of London in the run-up to Christmas, as everyone was all about winter wonderland, mince pies and mulled wine. Then one (not-so) foggy Christmas Eve I boarded a flight to deliver presents to the most un-Christmas of places, Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. Christmas Day isn't even a public holiday here. And as opposed to the freezing Christmas temperatures in Europe, it was a rather balmy 25 degrees. When I arrived however, the desert sun was nowhere to be seen, as the whole city was, believe it or not, shrouded in fog! Maybe it really is Christmas. The first thing that struck me about Dubai was the incredible sight of the main highway, Sheik Zayed Road, slicing through a huge concentration of wall-to-wall skyscrapers. It looked like I ... read more

Originally, we were wanted to go on a Tanzanian safari during the Christmas break. But, since the flights from North America were so expensive, we figured we'll get to Dubai and catch a cheaper flight from Dubai to Tanzania. Then we figured, why not make Dubai a destination in itself? So, that's what brought us to Dubai. We spent the first week around Dubai and Sharjah, 3 days in Doha, Qatar, and the remainder of the time on the beach in Fujairah, by the Indian Ocean. In Dubai, it rained for two days. The rain came down hard and then the sun came out. So, it was pleasant. Not like the London or Vancouver style grey skies and slow drissle all day long. What's there to do in Dubai? Plenty. But, most of it is centred ... read more

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (7 - 17 November 2008) After Sri Lanka, the contrast to the life in Dubai could not have been bigger! What a city: one big construction site, with sky scrapers up to 900m (Burj Dubai), traffic jams all over, posh people, gold and glitter, mega shopping malls, amusement parks (indoor skiing, water parks) , and so on - an artificial (Disney) world for adults! Meeting Roli at the airport, we went for a nice brunch with Maryam and her boyfriend Kiavesh, before checking in at our excellent guesthouse. Hidden behind walls, our stay started with a cool pool party basically organized by some Emirates Airline girls. And this in an Arabian country! Crazy! And of course then we went out… To the Jumeirah Beach Hotel with a fabulous view on the famous ... read more

We finally went to see the flamingoes again yesterday. We made an attempt a very long time ago, but went on a Friday so it was shut (and we didn't realise that it was actually open at other times as the nice friendly sign giving you the opening times was actually not around.) But our Dubai guru Leanne told us that it was open during the week and on Saturdays (apparently it just isn't open on Fridays) we decided to go again and take another look. The reserve is actually pretty cool and is right in the heart of town. It is a nightmare to try and get to with the only possible access being from the 44 in the direction of town. Once you get there you park up and walk along the Hide access ... read more

We went to the Mall of the Emirates yesterday to do some stuff and they had the Dubai regional contest of the Red Bull Art of Can exhibition. Know I went to this in Chicago last year and it was absolutely amazing! The winning entry was a dragon (which is probably why I liked it). However these entries were not really as good. There was an enormous scuplture of the Burj Al Arab however which was interesting. ... read more

Well the new Dubai Mall has opened and it is really rather cool. I went there for a weeny visit with ma and pa when they were in town, and then again yesterday with Mr David. The aquarium that they have there is stunning. It is 3 storeys high and probably 100m long and just filled with all the coolest fishes you ever did see. The mall itself is collosal with so many shops in it! However at present most of the shops are still not open. But when they are......watch out credit cards. Did I mention that I have had my colors done recently as well! So of course most of my old clothes were the wrong colors and had to be put out to pasture.... and new ones brought in. It has been fun. ... read more

Dubai has been an eye opener in more ways then one, although the journey here like always has been an adventure. Given that I only had less than 26 hours in Dubai it was best that I made the most of it. Fortunately I had a contact on the ground in Dubai to organise things for me. But that meant a mad dash from Sharjah airport to my Dubai hotel, then onto the venue of the Ball all within three hours of hitting the ground. Given that it took an hour to get out of the airport I had it against me from the start, but it all ended well and Cinderella made it to the ball on time. As always the leadup to all this was more of a challenge....... prior to starting on this ... read more

Casablanca was nothing like the movie! I was staying in the Medina Ancienne which was in reality down by the port. The Medina was quite small and nothing like Fes or Chefchaouen. The location was dodgy and the hotel had no heating (which I expected) but it did have and English movie channel which was the first time I had been able to watch English movies for months. I snuggled up in bed and watched back to back movies (yay!). The Hotel also had the best breakfast. Whilst in Casablanca I heard about the siege at Bangkok airport. The first reports coming through suggested that the demonstrators were trying to interupt the return of the Thai PM from the APEC conference in Peru. Later reports tended to suggest that it was about more and that the ... read more
