So, we cheated a bit after Mozambique. We had planned to take a bus through Swaziland and Lesotho before a final bus journey back to Cape Town. But, that was BEFORE Florian's bout with malaria! Instead, we headed to Johannesburg and relaxed a couple of days with the lovely Du Plessis family before FLYING back to Cape Town (and then on to Dubai and Australia). Florian and I had met Bernard Du Plessis in November while shopping in Cape Town and had a nice time chatting. We stayed in touch and he generously invited us to stay with his family if we should make it to Johannesburg. We had a wonderful time at his home and got to know his lovely wife Samantha and his daughters Morgan and Andie (and heard about "Bump", i.e. the baby ... read more

Day 1 Thursday 29 Jan Winchester to Dubai Sitting writing this in bare feet in D & E’s garden in Dubai with a coffee and a cig. Got to bed at nearly 3 am (a very civilised 11pm GMT) after a bit of a long day on the M3, Terminal 3 and on an Emirates 777. What a bummer at Heathrow. Marooned at Terminal 3 for the morning. Every other flight seems to be leaving Heathrow more or less on time, but ours with Emirates to Dubai, is four bloody hours late. Delays to and from Dubai are pretty rare, and not usually cos of fog. I ask you! Fog in Dubai! For months I’ve been checking the weather in Dubai come shine, come shine. You don’t see photos of camels and construction cranes in the ... read more

We arrived around 7 a.m. and found a taxi for the town centre, picked up a tour bus about 9.30 and spent the whole day touring round the city and local area. We heard about all the shopping malls, souks, 5* hotels as the commentary kept repeating information from time to time. Dubai Museum appeared disappointing at first until we discovered the entrance to the underground section which tries to recreate something of the history of the area. Otherwise the creek was the most interesting area with a strange mixture of old and new watercraft of all sizes. The end of the trip allowed us to take a dhow? on the creek just as the sun was setting. This was the highlight of the trip as far as we were concerned. We then found a lovely ... read more

Sitting in Dubai relaxing with a Vodka and pineapple juice with Gen and Paul. Had a lovely relaxing couple of days so far, had great Pakistani food last night and Indian tonight. Need to start planning I think really from tomorrow and book a few nights accommodation in Mumbai. Rethinking our plan at the moment to take into account the possible cold weather in India!! Hoping that everyone is well. Ok and for those of you who don't know we managed to rent out the house just ten minutes before we left the country so that was a huge relief!!
