Doobie Dubai! So after managing to survive Thailand relatively unscathed (the only casualties being shoes, a camera and maybe our livers) we were on our way to Dubai to catch up with family and friends. Whilst I was hoping Etihad Airways to be of relative luxury, we unfortunately found out soon enough that we were being eaten to death by fleas and sitting next to an elderly, obvious chain-smoking gentleman whom we feared might not live through the flight. Luckily he did, and we arrived safely (albeit flea ridden) at Abu Dhabi where we were picked up by the lovely Emma and Gavin. What a relief not having to catch a bus, then another bus and then a ferry (you get my drift) and being treated to flushing toilets, air conditioning and comfy bed at Em ... read more

Late at night, around 11.00 our flight from Athens landed in Dubai. A mixup with the gates meant we'd be bussing from the aircraft to the terminal. The 4 hour flight had been a pleasant suprise. Not all airlines treated us plebs as well as Emirates did. The PA extolled the virtues of the UAE, a phalanx of grinning Emirates flight attendants channelling shuffling passengers through the exit door. My glasses fogged-up instantly as I passed out of the cool cabin thrumming with air-conditioners onto the tarmac, the roar of machines thickening your senses , already numbed by the heat. “Shit” I muttered. In response, an amused flight steward farewelled me. “Enjoy the weather”. I could half make out the smile on his face as I briefly turned on the staircase. A motorcade of low-slung terminal ... read more

10-10-08 - 12-10-08 After a 3hr flight from Jordon we arrived at Abu Dahbi airport. It took quite a while to get through immigration, but we finally reach the luggage pickup area and grabbing our bags headed off to catch the curtist bus to Dubai. We reach the drop off point, and from there taxied to our hotel. The next day had nothing planned as this was our wind down before home. It's gone so fast, we want to head off to Greece and beyond but it can't be. We decided to book a desert safari tour for the afternoon. These take you over the dunes in 4 wheel drives to watch the sunset, then on to a desert camp for evening activities and a meal. We took the opportunity to ride camels, as this was ... read more

Our flight leaves at 10am tomorrow morning. Kevin, Sophie and I don't want to go home, Sophie has even written a list of the places she wants to go to 1. Greece 2. England 3 Germany 4 Mexico. Brianna though has had enough and wants to get home. We arrive back in Brisbane 8am Thursday, Sophie reckons she is going to school Friday, but we will see how jet lag effects her. It is 9am here at the moment and both the girls are still asleep. We have had the best 6 weeks ever. See you soon ... read more

12-10-08 to 14-10-08 This morning we slept in a little as we had only to check out, then find our way to our next stop the new Atlantis. It is located at the end of The Palm, and is an amazing site as you approach it. As with most things in Dubai this place is nothing but the best. It has only been open for 2 weeks, you could still smell the fresh paint on the walls. Atlantis has shops, restaurants, cafes, water park, beaches, pools, huge fish viewing aquariums in the hotel and a dolphin bay where you can swim with the dolphins. Rooms are even available looking into the aquarium. You can sleep beside the fish. Arriving at lunch we had time to have a good look around and then hit the water park ... read more

This time for a training I headed my way to Dubai. Stayed 6 days totally and the great thing was I spared one day for some things that I could not have chance to do last time. One was doing jeep Safari in the desert and second one swimming in the Basra gulf which is part of the Indian ocean. So among the three oceans in the world only Atlantic would be left where I had not put my feet in yet. During the training we were taken out for a dinner by our hosts to Dubai Creek. The sea made its way to the inland like 1-2 km's and like Golden Horn of Istanbul nature created a river like water way inside the city. This place is called "Dhow" in Arabic and old city called ... read more

October 11th Al Garoud For the last two weeks we have been at the villa in Al Garoud near the airport this had good and bad points. The good points were a less rarified life closer to normality and some loss of weight away from the wondrous cuisine of the glasshouse- not to mention the ever present treats in the executive lounge and happy hour. The bad points were the pigeons and the street cats which all use the backgarden as their personal domain and I was constantly clearing up after them. The villa is " of its time" and all in all was spacious and well designed and we know the guy- Prakesah who had moved out with his wife and children when he was moved to Abu Dhabi. There were naturally the signs of ... read more

Dubai - Days 29, 30, and 31 I told you the updates would come quickly! We probably will have one more soon after this as we're in Bangkok and we will head off to the islands in two days. I'm sure internet is spotty in the Thai islands...and not much to write except the beach is very nice....so updates may get slow again. We didn't take too many pictures of Dubai as I think we were kind of confused by the town/area/beach/industrial city? Its a very large place with tons of cranes and construction everywhere. Combination of Orlando meets Vegas meets Bollywood. The buildings all look like Vegas casinos (no gambling...sorry Jane), but they are all spread apart like Orlando (Andy's great home town), there are tons of amusement park-type attractions being built, and all the ... read more

We were not sure what to expect at our first stop in Dubai with a steady weather forecast of sun and temperatures with 41 C at day time and 33 C in night time. Ok, it is dessert area; therefore night might be dry. So it should be not so bad. Additionally Ramadan started just few days before eating and drinking in public was not allowed during day time. As precaution we booked a good hotel standard with a small swimming pool and got a nice air condition room. At least hotel and flight prices droop considerably during this time. We relaxed after the short 7 hours night flight in the hotel and pool and ventured out to participate in the iftar meal after sunset. This is the traditional muslim meal in Ramadan that breaks the ... read more
