8.30am Dubai time I am not an avid proponent of blogs, even less so travel blogs. However, after 3 years of lost cameras and poorly sustained diaries, I have decided to take advantage of the 'EK Lounge' free wireless with the aim of giving anyone who is interested updates on my next six months in China. My brain is not functioning to capacity, maybe due to lack of sleep, maybe due to 3 double gin and tonics courtesy of Emirates, who may I say are quite simply the best airline I have ever flown with. Where du'bai quality like that? (that one is for you Pyrah - there will be more). I watched VickyChristinaBarcelona on the plane, respectable if I may say so myself, but any attempts to impress the asian brummy man next to me ... read more

The start of spring is celebrated in Azerbaijan with a week off work! The festival is called Novruz Bayram but we decided not to hang around and see the festivities. Our original plan was to go to Uzbekistan but we were tired of the cold and wanted heat, so we headed to Dubai and Oman instead!! Tuesday's flight with Azerbaijan Airlines is during the day so we headed out to the airport after breakfast. Soon we were overflying Iran and touching down in Dubai. 90 minutes after landing we were by the pool in the Richmond Hotel Apartments which we had booked through E-bookers. There were only 5 sunbeds for all the guests to share which, despite my complaints, the management thought was adequate enough!! ... read more

The flight from Mumbai to Dubai was only 2 hours but I didn’t eat or drink anything because everything on board the Jazeera Airways costs money, even the water. This is because Jazeera Airways is really cheap and has minimal service, such as, they don’t do baggage transfers if you have a connecting flight. The flight from Mumbai to Dubai was only $100, everything included. The return flight cost the same. I stayed with a friend who is from India but works for a company in Dubai. He recently moved to a hotel apartment because it’s actually cheaper than living in a regular rental apartment. In the hotel apartment, there are people that come and clean everyday. They change the bed sheets, provide soap, shampoo, towels, toilet paper, etc. just like in a hotel. But since ... read more

Well here we are at the Ides of March- and another weekend here been and gone.Matthew flew home on Wednesday and on Thursday five of us went to the terrace at le Meridien as usual- Shane flying back to Melbourne on Friday morning. Friday here was quite hot ,very humid and very foggy Ian and Sally had the car so we just relaxed at home and did the supermarket shop across the road. In the late afternoon when Ian and Sally returned from the beach we all drove out to yet another mall- one I had not ticked off my list- ibn buttata- named after the famous Arabian explorer. We had our evening meal there using our buy one get one free tokens of course!! On saturday we all drove up to Hatta as Ian and Sally ... read more

Well the Rugby World Cup Sevens were held in Dubai on the weekend and what a weekend it was. The weather was perfect for the event (even a little on the warm side). But the most amazing thing of all were the results of the quarter finals on finals day. The first game that was up was NZ vs Wales. Imagine my shock and horror when the kiwis lost to Wales 14-15. However the next game was even better. England vs Samoa. At full time the score was 26 all and it was only in extra time that the Samoa's scored the first points knocking the English team out of the Cup in the Quarter Finals. Then it was the turn of South Africa who were playing Argentina. The whole stadium watched on in dis-belief as ... read more

Saa proev Dubai, hvis ... read more

From India we went to Dubai. There is a lot of buzz about Dubai these days. I've seen TV shows about Dubai that range from 60 minutes to Modern Marvels on the Discovery channel. I was interested to see it. The first thing that struck me about Dubai is what an insane place it is. Like Las Vegas, Dubai has built itself smack dab in the desert with no regard whatsoever for the environment. It is a place with more money than brains. They are building everything you can think of in Dubai, and then some. Everywhere you look there are construction cranes. They have golf courses, fountains everywhere, man made islands in the shape of a palm tree (the national symbol) and even their own ski slope. It is just over the top. They even ... read more

Cooler weather during the February months means the only time possible to play sports here is now so this is the time that world class sports hit Dubai. When I was there the Dubai Tennis open was on… Female’s week Some of these girls are so hot I don’t know how the opposition can concentrate. When I was a young teenager I use to play tennis. But when I hit my mid teens I changed sports to rugby league. I can’t believe my dad allowed me to play Rugby league during my mid teens. I enjoyed the team camaraderie but with the knowledge that I now have if I have a son and he does the same as me. I won’t allow it, even if he hates tennis! I’ll say, “No son, you’ll thank me. I couldn’t tell you what the slope looked like after the first few runs. Heading butt first into ‘SLOW DOWN’ signs, into bright orange fences. I couldn’t help but fall over. Even after the first two seconds I was down for the count. The second fall I thought I was a paraplegic. I was on the snow, snowboarding in the desert doing one of the unrealistic realisms of Dubai. And for the fourth journey in a row I got a bruised coccyx. Few places in the world you can go to and all walks of life from around the world are there (minus the beggar and the gypsy.) The rich Property developer, the poor Pakistani taxi driver, the Emirates stewardesses, the Bangladeshi cricket playing construction workers. But in Dubai people come and go more so than ... read more

Tja, ... read more
