7 September 2008 The new day began with us waking up at about 8am. We were all hungry and had nothing to have for breakfast, so we got dressed and setout to gather food in the 30 something degree heat. Remember the time! We found a little grocery store not to far away and guided by the kids purchased a box of fruitloop like ball things and milk to go with it. Back at the motel room we tucked into this nutritious breakfast, taking it in turns, as there was only one mixing bowl. We had a spoon each though. After breakfast we hit the pool to cool off. No pool heating neccessary as the temperature of the water was simular to a warm bath. It was still refreshing though. Working up an appetite, and as ... read more

First stop on my travels was Dubai for five days. It was an interesting start coming into Abu Dhabi airport after 15 hrs of flying and seeing the crazy mosaic airport at about 3am Australian time....I just stood jet-lagged trying to take it in. So much effort for an airport... Dubai was not what I expected...it's very old meets new. There's a mass of highrises and construction like the advertising promotes but on the other hand there's still stinky old wooden abra's being used to cross Dubai Creek to the old Souqs. There's also a clear distinction of wealth and it's not all that clean. It's definately not a city to have a black car in with smog and dust settling everywhere. I had an absolute ball on a desert tour which included 4x4 sand dune ... read more

Thursday September 18th Well it is the weekend here again- a hazy day but the wind has got up and it is rumoured that we will have a sand storm.I have not been out again today as it is very sticky and unpleasant- my room overlooks a tiny building site where a couple of labourers are building something and Ian and I keep trying to guess what. It is taking them ages- Ian watched their labours last time he was here- it is in complete contrast to the vast building sites all round the Emirates where the scene is constantly changing at great speed. What concerns me is that one of the labourers actually lives on the site and in the evenings he settles down on a wooden plank and goes to sleep. This makes me ... read more

In London there is always someone you know who has been to Dubia. They all tell you of the fantastic hotels and great buildings. To my suprise I enjoyed the trip not for the above reason but for a great adventure on a Desert Safri and shopping and eating at a place called Mina Bazzar or Little India. The desert safari was a great 6 hour adventure, rocking and rolling on the sand dunes in a 4X4. The evening entertainment and food was terrific - a film story setting. Shopping at Mina Bazzard, everting Indian. We got a dress made within 2 hours at a shop called Dream Girl and ate at a great Indian restaurant called Rangoli. Meet a true chracter called Crazy Chintu - who owned a local internet case - his story of ... read more

Hello Everyone, We still can't load pictures, but trust me when I say that Dubai is one of the nicest and most beautiful cities I've ever been to! We got stuck in Cairo, so we didn't arrive in Dubai until 2:30 a.m., but were lucky enough to take a tour of the city today. We went through the whole city, seeing beaches, the Burj Duabi (the world's tallest building), the Grand Mosque, the Sheik's Palace, the Palm Jumeirah, the Burj Al Arab (Sail hotel) and the Atlantis Hotel. We also got to see some of the shopping centers. Jake and I love it here and wish we had more time. We've decided that we definitely want to come back and stay longer. It's a great city with lots to do. They are continuing to build, and ... read more

6 September 2008 After a very tiring 16 hours of flying we have arrived in Dubai the first stop of our adventure. Brianna and Sophie were fantastic. For the first leg of the journey between Brisbane and Singapore they watched movies and as expected Sophie fell asleep about 1 hour out of Singapore and wasn't impressed about being woken up and having to get off the plane. The leg between Singapore and Abu Dhabi saw us all asleep. We arrived at Abu Dhabi airport at about midnight local time (6am our time). We had cleared customs, grabbed our luggage, and was on the bus to Dubai within 20mins (this also included a toilet stop at the airport, were Brianna was fascinated with the prayer room in the bathroom. We had a lenghthy discussion about why all ... read more

The Toddler and I have just returned from a month in our new home in the desert. Whether it was the effect of finally (and very happily) being reunited with his Daddy, or being immersed in a new culture with so many new sights and experiences, I’m not certain, but The Toddler underwent something of a transformation while away - he’s grown up so much and everyone is commenting on it! It’s not lost on him either - when people ask his name, he resolutely replies, ‘Big Boy’. So, without much ado, I should re-introduce him as: ‘Big Boy, formerly known as The Toddler’. I’m happy to report that Big Boy, the Pilot and International Escapee Mummy (my new name, as coined by fellow-blogger Nappy Valley Girl!) loved Dubai. In fact, I don’t know how to ... read more
