We left our beloved Istanbul and took the ferry across the Sea of Marmara to Bursa. In just under two hours we were at the Mudanya port, about 30km from Bursa. We couldn't work out the buses so we took a taxi to our boutique hotel. I had been to Bursa in 2006 with Intrepid on my first trip to Turkey - from what I remember Bursa is a historical city that was on the silk road. Today, Bursa is famous for its silk. Seljuk-style mosques and the famous Iskender Kebap (which many restaurants renamed it the Bursa Iskender). When I planned our trip, I neglected to check the public holidays – Kurban Bayramı (eid-al-adha in the Arabic speaking world) fell on the day we were due to leave Bursa for Çeşme. Usually, there is a ... read more

We arrived into the new Istanbul Airport (one word HUGE) late Monday evening from Seoul. We were swiftly picked up by our pre-arranged pick up service by a nice young man in flash BMW and taken to our hotel in the old city. We love staying around the Sirkeci/Fatih area of Istanbul – close enough the Sultanahmet and all of the old city attractions, and only a short walk over the Galata bridge to the shopping/hip district of Beyoğlu. My 6th visit to Turkey, and Bill's 5th. This city will never grow old for us – indeed this country sparks something special for us. Early the next morning (which is a great time as not too many people are out) we walked up the winding street dodging trams and cars to Sultanahmet. As we've done the ... read more

DIVING AGAIN – TURKEY Our last day aboard the cruise ship was the usual; haste packing up our things, temporary loss of vital documents, confusion. Our ship arranged a ride to the airport. The flight was uneventful. I decided I had imposed on Aylin long enough. I thanked her for all her help and found a hotel for my last week in Turkey. It is closer to the marina where the dive boat is. I felt like my old self, glad to be on my own again. I also booked a hotel in Istanbul near the airport for the day before my flight back to Seattle. With that out of the way, I could relax and focus on diving. I made plans with a dive shop for three days of diving. My hotel is within walking ... read more

TOWARD TURKEY My Trip Continues The train trip to Athens was uneventful. I met a young man going home to vote; it sounded like the Christmas story. I left my hat and my roller cart on the train and spent almost an hour and a half trying to get them back. The roller cart turned up; My underwater camera fits perfectly on the roller cart, so I was relieved. I never found the hat. I was right on schedule to meet my friend Aylin in Turkey. Back in Washington, when we discussed how and when I would visit her at her summer home in Turkey, we commiserated about how travel is more difficult and expensive for singles. She said she would like to take a trip with me. I thought that would be great…three days in ... read more

Turkey; Istanbul, Gallipoli, Troy and Canakkale We had left Australia on a daytime flight, staying at KL overnight before a daytime flight to Oman for a few days. After Oman, we headed to Jordan and then onto Israel. Our commentaries on these destinations can be found Israel, Jordan and Oman. When planning this trip, we thought we'd stay in the (sort of) Middle East and hence visit Istanbul (it had been on the bucket list for a while). We also felt compelled to go visit Gallipoli. As always, if you want to see the picture in a larger size, just click on it. Day 1 - 19 May; Arrival When booking our flight, the destination was Attaturk (the international airpo... read more

Am prins sezonul florilor in gradinile palatului Topkapi.

I was thinking long time about travel to Istanbul. Then finally, I did it. My first time Airbnb. Very nice people, so much hospitality, enjoy communicate to locals, a lot of wonderful experience. And I met YouTubers then I am on it! https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=xhUntBB85So

So my journey home is nicely delayed by a three day stopover in Istanbul. The good news is that it’ll shorten my sitting in a plane seat time and slowly return my body clock to UK time. And the very good news is that friend Julie Dent from the Clover Mill Ayurvedic Yoga Retreat in Cradley is going to join me there for a few days of winter break. In fact she’d booked us into a little guest house near the Blue Mosque and had already been exploring Istanbul for a full day. Straight into the tiny reception office from the sleepy early morning street outside and phoned to see if Julie was awake. Of course she was! So after I’d dumped the luggage and jumped into a welcome hot shower, we climbed the steep marble ... read more
