We really enjoyed Canakkale - a small town that was easy to explore, in a beautiful setting. It is southwest of Istanbul (about a 6 hour drive) and located right on the Dardenelle straits which run between the Aegean and Marmara seas. Our first morning we visited the city's fortress which is also the Army and Navy Museum. It was built in the 15th century with 9 foot thick walls in certain sections (ie the officer's quarters....!). The grounds are well maintained and now include a lovely garden area overlooking the mouth of the Dardenelle. The day we were there, a large number of new cadets were being toured around as part of their training - perhaps this is why we were assigned a young officer (well, maybe not an officer) who gave us a guided ... read more

Keşan looked hazy in the morning. The hotel breakfast was, I had been reliably informed, typically Turkish: olives, boiled eggs, fetta cheese, sliced tomatoes and cucumber, and grape juice. "Good breakfast!" I had been told the evening before. It was good, and surprisingly meatless. The bus to the Gallipoli Peninsula that I had been promised was not now running apparently. A few commanding shouts, however, from the hotel receptionist - directly possibly at me, possibly at a man standing outside, I wasn't sure - saw me bundled into a rattly old car and driven at high speed down the road. I was relieved to soon arrive at the bus station, and not find myself - well, you know how the imagination can be at times like this. I had an hour and a half before my ... read more

The accommodations we found in Assos were pretty austere and uncomfortable so we decided that the next stop we would treat ourselves to a comfortable bed and hot shower. We were making our way back to Istanbul and not to be confused with the battlefield Gallipoli. Just a stopping off point on our trip back to Istanbul. We a chilly lunch at an outdoor café in Marmara Ereglisi and the waiter took pity on my shivering and wrapped me in a plaid blanket. ... read more

There are 2 pages of photos again. Where there is a poem or a quotation, click on the photo. It should open in a new window and hopefully you can read the inscriptions. We came to the Gallipoli peninsula quite ignorant of any detail about the events which took place here in 1915. The night before our visit we watched the film Gallipoli starring a very young Mel Gibson. It was very interesting and I think it put things into context for us. The morning of our visit we watched a documentary called Gallipoli: The Fatal Shore featuring interviews with various Gallipoli veterans from both sides of the trenches. Our trip began at 1230 and we went first to a museum and then to numerous battlefields and cemeteries. I won't go into a lot of detail ... read more

DAY 58 FREEDOM!! No more following orders, no more having to wait for others, no more hassles. We are on our own. We get up when we want and eat when we want! We eat breakfast with the last couple still remaining in Istanbul, Ray and Wendy who are staying to visit with their daughter.. Then we take a taxi to the bus station and off we go to Eceabat. On our travels we pull into a bus station along the way for a break. There is a bus next to ours. We get out to stretch our legs. Angie goes to the bathroom. Francine notices people looking at the front of the other bus. The windscreen is badly cracked and there is dry blood all across the front and two bloody hand prints on the ... read more

We arrived in Istanbul about 2 hours late after our flights were delayed gettin off the ground and leaving Zurich due to a connecting flight being late, we also had to circle for about 20 mins over Istanbul for whatever reason. Queued up for passport clearance for about 20 mins before realising that we needed to buy a visa, not one bloody sign in the place said we did and most people did the same as Katie and I, her friend Jamie didnt need one as Kiwi's dont require it for some reason, but she had to wait for us anyway. We got to the Hotel we were staying at after witnessing some of the craziest driving that i have ever seen. They are all mad and just cut each other off and turn from the ... read more

Day 378 After a half day work we got our flight from Birmingham to Istanbul on KLM arriving just after 1am. Our Fanatics pick up was there but didn't have our names on his list and spoke very little English. After a confusing phone call and quick check of the name of our hostel on the net our driver agreed to take us to the hostel. We snuck into our dorm trying not to disturb our roomys. Day 379 With the noise of the bakery opposite our room, some Aussies arriving back to the Hostel singing Your the voice (secretly we were just jealous it wasn´t us). We struggled to get a few hours sleep. After breaky we arranged to met Kara (Carly's aussie college from Birmingham). We headed to the Grand Bazaar, reported to be ... read more

The light in the sky increased as the dawn service came to an end although we awaited the sun with eagerness to try and get a feeling of warmth back into our bodies. The VIP's headed off including our GG and Crusher Collins ,Min of VetAffairs both who had spoken very well at the service.Amazingly even in this huge crowd there wasnt a queue for the portaloos.Perhaps people had thought there would be more along the road.So we both took advantage even though it was a challenge with packs on our backs and the bodies still chilled so that even when we were walking one had this trembling feeling.I didnt think it was possible to actually stay awake for such a long period but perhaps like daughter Erin,I didnt want to fall asleep in case the cold ... read more
