Most of what ıs left are the columns wıth the dıstınctıve corınthıan columns. Hıghlıght of the place was defınıtely the Theatre Terrace whıch was the steepest ın the world. In Fethiye I looked at a couple of pensiyons and settled on Monica's Place (Ferah's). One of the best places I've stayed in so far - very friendly and great people. The dorm on the top floor has an amazing view over the harbour. On my first day in Fethiye I decided to walk through the abandoned Ottoman Christian village of Kayakoy to Oludeniz. Supposedly this village was Louis de Bernieres' inspiration for 'Birds Without Wings.' It was a pretty eerie place, with thousands of abandoned buildings. I must say, however, that I think that the Romans made much better job of building houses than the Christians. Most of the rooves had gone and the walls were falling down. Hardly anyone was wandering round - just a couple of kids kicking a ball up one of ... read more

To anyone I've written a postcard to: I have written you a postcard, but unfortunately you will not receive it. I wrote some very nice postcards and used them to keep the page in my book. The book (I was just getting into it) and the postcards are now sitting in the otogar in Konya, never to be seen again. I suppose this sad story could be called 'Disaster Number Three.' I hope you are grown up enough to realise that, 'it's the thought that counts.' I've bought some more postcards and I'll send them soon. ________________ This is the start of a manic phase of seeing things: bus, see ruins, bus, sleep, bus etc. In Selcuk I stayed in the Australian and New Zealand Guesthouse. It's a pity that there were no Anzacs there... I ... read more

We arrived into Fettiyeh after dark and it took us a while to work out where our hotel was. We had pre-booked in Istanbul, so we knew what it was called - just none of the locals did. We finally found it after a good hour of searching and checked in before heading out for a quick meal before bed. Fettiyeh is a typical beach resort town and as such attracts tourists from all over the place, including fat, sunburnt, lager-swilling Brits. Happy time! Our one day in Fettiyeh was spent sitting by the small pool in our hotel, getting sunburnt and drinking lager. (well?) We even found time to duck out at lunch for a doner kebab and in the evening for...the same. A very un-productive day but who cares! Saturday morning, we were picked ... read more

6 May After an early night in my funny smelling room and looking forward to a nice relaxing breakfast I head to the balcony and am immediately confronted by an annoying voice of a very crazy lady who sounded very rude. I tried to not pay any attention to her and was trying to focus on the fact that I would soon be on my cruise with 4 beautiful days of sunshine. Then I hear her say to two other guys that she will see them on the cruise that leaves today. Aaarrgghh, that’s the same one as me. ‘You’ve got to be kidding’ I said to everyone when she left the balcony ‘She is going to drive us all nuts’. I even start to rethink the cruise on the transfer into town as she is ... read more

The past one and a half weeks have been spent looking at a lot of ruins... The ruins: Troy, Assos, Pergamum, Ephesus, Priene, Miletus, Didyma, Hierapolis and Afrodisias. Troy: in order to escape the ANZAC crowd gathered at Gallipoli I stayed in the village just outside the gates of Troy. This was a total success as the village was nice and peaceful... The next day I visited the site really early so as to be ahead of the inevitable tours, but allas! You can't escape the Asian tourists... Three tour busses had arrived already. Luckily they rushed through the site in whirlwind fashion and seemed to be more interested in the kitschy replica of the Trojan Horse than in the ruins themselves. Although there isn't much to see, I wanted to get my money's worth out ... read more

Leaving Istanbul, we crossed the 'official' continental line from Europe into Asia, so this is the first entry from Asia. We arrived into Selcuk on a beautiful sunny day (no, I'm not joking) at 8:00am after a fairly sleepless night and checked into our hotel, the Paris Hotel. Not quite as upmarket as it sounds but still perfectly comfortable and the first time we've been treated to a private room. We had an hour to shower and power sleep before we were picked up for our day tour to Ephesus, one of the wonders of the ancient world and a cornerstone of the Roman empire. Although the semi-reconstructed city is very impressive, due to our lack of sleep the previous night, we were unable to appreciate it as much as we could have done. As the ... read more

I finally got a chance to dump all my pictures, so I've put some old ones up as well as a few here. Travel update: I got my ticket purchased to Zagreb so I'll be in Stuttgart at 6am on May 15, watch the Champions League final on TV there, then fly to Zagreb in the morning of the 16th arriving at 11am. What have I been doing here? The day after landing in Celçuk I was on the way to Ephesus (Efus), the major tourist attraction nearby. After a delightful breakfast of feta, tomato, cucumber, hard-boiled egg and olives (a Turkish standard, I gather), the hostel offered free rides to the town but you were left on your own on the way back. I met up with Matt and Meghan, a couple who I met ... read more

30 April I got up pretty early and left at 7:25. I caught the tram to Aksaray Square and walked for 10-15mins to get to where the ferries leave from. Once there I enquired about getting a ticket to Bandirma and found out the next one was at 5:30, not 9:00 as the staff at the hostel had told me. Well stuff waiting around all day, and I then decided to head to the Otogar (bus station) and see where I could go instead. I asked the bus drivers how to get to the otogar but no one spoke English, and none of the buses use cash to pay for the fares. I paid 5L for a cab to the metro, then got the metro to the otogar and decided I would go to Bergamum instead. ... read more

This was a very special day. We started with a visit to Mary’s House. It is believed she came here with John after Jesus died. There is a lovely chapel there. From here we went to Ephesus, the best preserved and most visited site in Turkey. Wow could they build cities back then…it was enormous and so much has been rebuilt. It must have been a city to behold when it was in full swing 3rd century BC to 6th Century AD. We then met Michelle, Mark’s sister who drove us to her home in Bodrum. ... read more
