Pamukkale is where there are the ruins of Hierapolis, The temple of Apollo and the Necropolis. There are so many old ruins in Turkey from many, many centuries. We walked in the hot calcium pools which are often photographed. They were very impressive, although not as full as we had expected. After leaving here we visited Aphrodisias, the city devoted to the Goddess of Love. Again these ruins were immense but very well preserved. Our guide was a fountain of knowledge but had to restrain with the intimate details of some things due to young listening ears! At last we had a great lunch near Aphrodisas! We drove to Kuakas from here . This is a city on the west coast that many cruise ships dock at. It is on the Aegean Sea. This was to ... read more

Promises of free time for self-exploration never eventuated. Everyone, including the Top Deck representative is pissed off at the Tour Guide from ‘Fez Travel’- starting to get a sour taste about this tour - just crap organisation. No-one knows entry fees until we get to the specific place making it hard for us to have money on hand - getting to an ATM is near impossible due to lack of free time. Today we also did Tour Guide ‘directed’ visits to a leather, jewellery & sweets ‘stores’ - 3 hours wasted. Also visited the home of the Virgin Mary - am apparently now a ‘Blessed / Haji’ person!! We’re all sick of buffets and some of us are thinking of trying to find our own dinner in Kusadusi tonight. With a long road trip to Istanbul ... read more

After a long and very deep sleep we left Kucukkuyu for Kusadusi via the Acropolis at Pergamum. We stayed in a very nice “holiday resort” on the edge of the Adriatic Sea - a quick dip in the morning was very refreshing. Pergamum is an amazing Roman ruin set high on a mountain - how anyone was ever able to invade this city is beside my comprehension - let alone imagining how they managed to build such a huge place in the first place. During the day we visited a Turkish Carpet store - for a ‘flying carpet show’ (basically the sales pitch involved giving out drinks of Raki and throwing carpets in the air!!!). I purchased a carpet for Elise and Paul. Our trip to Kusadusi was long - we arrived after 11pm. With promises ... read more

Today (Aprıl 13th) was a fairly quiet day spent in Selcuk. Early in the morning a large group went to the Bella Pension where the pension operators also run a quality carpet shop. Everyone had been invited to their hotel for breakfast on the rooftop terrace with views overlooking the ruins of St. John's Basıllıca and Selcuk. After breakfast everyone went to the carpet shop where Urdell (one of the operators) spent a couple hours explaınıng carpets. Theır hıstory, how to tell qualıty, types of materıal, (cotton, wool,sılk) and dıfferent trıbal desıgns. The next few hours were ''spent lookıng at carpets''. Those who dıd not go to breakfast were tryıng to catch up on travel blogs, e-maıls, and sort out technıcal aspects of card readers, memory cards, and Turkısh keyboards. Plus all those helpful Mıcrosoft wındows show ... read more

Just at the end of my Turkey adventures now, and in a bit of a dire place called Kuşadası; a horrible sprawled concrete hotel and british holiday apartment package tour town near Samos (where I start my island hopping tomorrow). The weather is great though. Yes I let the weather decide my route for the next month. Looking north it is still a bit grim. Looking west it should be all sun and smiles. So it's Greece then Italy most probably. Anyway, where was I... Yes Antalya and the Turquoise coast. Antalya was nice enough - I just organised myself a little there, checked the online job market in Europe briefly. Had a nice encounter with some locals on arrival. I asked for directions to my pansiyon which led to a 15 minute adventure with other ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Fethiye March 21st 2006

I have arrived in Fethiye, which is by far the most touristy place I've been in Turkey. Everything costs about double what it has so far. It is also very dead - there was only one other person staying at the most popular hostel in town! None of the blue cruise boats are running and many of the shops are closed. On the way into town from the bus station, our bus driver crashed into another car - ripping the back bumper off. The police arrived and he was made to sit in the back of the police car. Some random guy off the street got into the bus then and drove us to where we were getting off. Where this guy came from or who he was is a complete mystery! After getting to the ... read more

Dan, Mel and Georgia and I were meant to spend the afternoon in Pamukkale and move on to Capadouchia, but at the bus station we got shifted to a different minibus and Dan left his bag on a random bus. After much panic he got it back and we ended up meeting this local dude, 'Ali Barba', who took us to the 'secret' hot springs. Directions to get to them are in the Lonely Planet! But it saved the entrance fee of 10 pounds to get in and there were lots of locals with us. The springs were basically a long covered cave, so we had to leave all our clothes outside. It started raining and everything got wet. The walk home involved walking in the freezing cold at 1am with wet clothes down the travertines ... read more

Caught the overnight bus to Selcuk which was meant to arrive at 7am but instead arrived at 4am! Managed to find a hostel with someone awake, which was lucky. In the afternoon I looked around a huge ruined basillica on the hill above Selcuk. An Aussie guy Ryan, found this random guy who took us on a tour of the castle - which was not open because it was being restored. Was a bit dodgy and he tried to sell us fake ancient coins - which are actually modern coins they have feed to cows and sheep to make look old. I didn't manage to see Ephesus, but will try to go back via Selcuk and see it then. The next day four of us rented two scooters and we went to the second largest beach ... read more

Well, this travelling gets addictive! We'd only been home a few weeks from Bali when we both found ourselves with a weeks holiday from work. Couldn't stand the thought of England's grey skies so booked a flight to Turkey. We ended up in Marmaris, it was fairly quiet as it was the end of the season. The weather was a pleasant 25 degrees by day, a bit cool in the evening. We did plenty of running around on the dolmus buses, visiting Icmeler and Turunc. Both were lovely small towns backed by high mountains. On our last day we visited the famous rock tombs of Dalyan and also the supposed healing mud baths close by. This turned out to be quite a fun affair, although I have to admit that I declined from completly submerge myself ... read more
