Just a quick summary of the past few days, because I am pressed for time right now. Eilat was lots of fun! The first day we pretty much spent taking care of hotels and financial stuff in the morning, and sitting on the beach for the remainder of the day. The next day we went to Petra in Jordan!!!!! This is one of the most incredible places I have EVER been to. Pictures on the internet and in albums do not do justice to the majesty of this city. I wish I had time to post my own pictures but I don´t. The tour was very well-organized, safe, and informative. If I have time I will elaborate on the details later. The third day in Eilat was fun as well. We randomly bumped into Noah´s friends ... read more

Following the instructions from the decades-old poster, I visited the West Bank. The journey was perhaps one of the most politically intriguing experience I went through. The boarder between West Bank and Israel is marked by a fenced concrete wall erecting perhaps more than 8 meters. It took us (me and 2 other westerners) 10 minutes to get from Jerusalem to the crossing by shared taxi. The gate was a large complex that resembled much like an international airport crossing. Going into the west bank was simple and easy, for foreigners who bare no Arabic resemblance and hold a developed country’s passport: flash you passport, smile, and walk. The Palestinians on the other hand, have to show detailed documentation, answer questions, then scan their fingerprints on the way in, every single time. After the gate ... read more

There’s a cheerless soldier keeping vigil at the entrance to the Haifa train station. He has broad, muscular shoulders and gray-green eyes and a jaw that looks like it was hacked from a quarry in Kohav Ha Shahar. I give him a bright, bushy “Shalom!” and he fingers the revolver on his belt. He wants me to unpack my bags. I grudgingly rifle through the wrinkled t-shirts and balled-up socks while he snuffs over my shoulder, the sort of banal baggage check that, I suspect, will become routine in the weeks ahead. As I’m repacking my things he waves a security wand over the sagging bottom of a white-haired retiree, proving that in the high-stakes world of global terrorism, there’s a very fine line between security and inanity. Ten minutes later I’m shuttling down the ... read more

Given my friends' thorough mental preparation about Israel, I was not surprised with the tight security and fully clad soldiers. I have to say that I was taken back by the relaxation and safety I felt in Tel Aviv. Maybe its all because of the warm Mediterranean breeze. With the never ending beaches and sun, it truly is a sun city. Another fact that my friends didn't tell me is that Tel Aviv is also the sin city of the middle east, just like Vegas...maybe its because of the neighborhood I stayed at. Moments after I walked into Old Jerusalem, the aforementioned safety was peeled away a thin layer. I am staying at a hostel right outside the Damascus gate, in the Arab district. I got lost for a moment after entering the Old City ... read more

If it was the sense of the exotic that tugged at my heartstrings through all these months in the Arab world - the crowded souqs, the pungent spices, the men kissing and holding hands and carrying on like a trailer for Spartacus - it’s the utterly familiar that gets me off to a good start here in Israel. There are young mothers in yoga pants and Crocs and men wearing baseball caps with Daytona Beach stitched across the front. There are kids debating the National League East standings on a park bench. There’s even a middle-aged dad tossing around the ol’ pigskin with his son on the sidewalk. It’s like I left Damascus and ran smack into the Jersey Turnpike, hitching a ride in the back of a Ford Taurus while some guy named Eddie ... read more

The past few days have been great! We stayed at the Massada Youth Hostel for 2 nights - the hostel is brand new, very clean, and well kept. We had a private balcony overlooking the Dead Sea as well. The first day we went to Ein Gedi and went on a hike through the waterfalls and caves. We swam in a small pool formed by the spring runoff. It was fun! Later that day we went to swim in the Dead Sea near the major hotels. The scenery was primarily geriatric, but floating was fun. The next morning we woke up at 4am to climb Massada. Josh and I made it up in 20 minutes. Noah was a little slower, but had an impressive time nonetheless, considering he was still on antibiotics and had a combined ... read more

The trip from the border takes us through lush quilts of farmland and fields of bobbing sunflowers - the sorts of Edenesque flourishes that make the words “Promised Land” sound like more than just snazzy PR. We drive through tidy suburbs with orange-tiled roofs and leafy yards, little girls pedaling their bicycles down the street, plaits of hair swinging from their pastel-colored helmets. If there’s any sure-fire sign that I’m a long way from the rest of the Middle East, it’s the fact that it feels like I’ve dozed off and woken up in Poughkeepsie. There are terriers scampering down the street, late-model sedans in more than a few driveways. I’m half-expecting a Mr. Softee truck to come coasting down the avenue, playing a cheerful, off-key jingle while a gaggle of screeching kids follow. With ... read more

Dictionaries are a wonderful thing. If anything, when you're highly bored or slightly out of your mind from the pain in your mouth....you take a look and see what's really in that magical book. A quick glance in the "B" section gives me "biological warfare" (לחמה ביולוגית) or "to build air raid shelters" (למקלת) which in reality that last ת should be a ת sofit, but I can't figure out how to do that on my keyboard at the moment. Then comes the distinction of "to get someone pregnant" which is not equal to "to make pregnant" however it all looks the same in Hebrew; להכניס להיריון. Which come to think of it....who the hell says "I come to make you pregnant now." It sounds like some creepy command that a guy makes and the ... read more

Shalom! We have spent the last 3 days in Jerusalem. Upon arrival, we drove in and did nothing the first day. The following day, we booked a tour of the Old City and saw the Armenian, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian quarters. We also spent 1.5h at Yad Vashem (not enough time). I had seen most of these sites before but it was a new experience for Josh, but it's always nice to see things again. The next day we went to the Israel Museum - of which the archaeological wing was closed... until 2009... for "comprehensive renovations". We saw the Dead Sea Scrolls though, which was amazing in itself. Later that day we took a scenic drive to a stalagtite/stalagmite cave near Beit Shemesh... which was closed for the day. Notice the theme. Also, I forgot ... read more
