June 30th, 2007 So I’ve been chilling out a lot and hitting up the beach. I’m starting to get one hell of a tan. My old roommate Jason is visiting from Jerusalem for the weekend. We’ve been going to the beach and last night we went out to a cool bar with a few friends. We all got kind of tipsy—my first time in Tel Aviv—but once again I didn’t really party to hard because we all just hung out as a group. I did go to a really cool party the other night though. It was “white night” here in Tel Aviv, which basically meant that everything stayed open really late, including museums and such. Basically it was just a reason for a party (siba l’misiba as we say in Hebrew). A couple of ... read more

After days of torpor in the heat of a Jerusalem summer, I’ve managed to make the most of my last few days in Israel. I spend an afternoon in the Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim and a morning watching the sun rise over the ramparts of the Old City. I head to the shouk to watch the shopkeepers pushing buckets of soapy water over the sidewalk and stacking crates of produce. The fish are getting laid out on beds of ice, their mouths agape. Two Arab deliverymen are having a smoke in the back of their truck, crouching beside rows of empty palettes. They’re flirting with a pair of Israeli soldiers in rumpled uniforms who giggle and nervously twirl their hair. The sun is dipping into the alleys of Nahlaot, casting long shadows over the ... read more

June 28th, 2007 Today I went on a tour to Zichron Ya’akov with my program from the Jewish Agency. It’s not much of a program really. We never see each other ever except for the rare event or tour, and this was my first one. I met some cool people, but I’ll probably only hang out with very few of them outside of the program. Zichron Ya’akov is a nice little town in the Carmel Mountain area of Israel. It’s up in the north by Haifa. It was the center of the NILI organization, which was the Israeli group that spied on the Ottoman’s for the Brits, and pretty much guaranteed Allenby a victory in Palestine. Read all about it here. The town was basically funded by the French Baron de Rothschild, who named it ... read more

June 26, 2007 So a lot has happened over the past few days, but to be honest I'm way too tired to write about it all. To start, Tel Aviv is in the midst of a heat wave, as is most of Israel. It's 100 degrees Fahrenheit and higher everyday. For those fans of the metric system, that's 38 degrees Celsius and up. It wouldn't be so bad if I could go to the beach everyday, but I started my job a couple of days ago. The hours really suck during my first week because I have to go through training. Basically, I’m at work from 8:30 AM until about 5:30 PM everyday. Today I worked until 6. It’s exhausting and I’m already sick of work in general. There’s a lot more responsibility than I expected, ... read more

Go to www.lajee.org and visit the website of this wonderful organisation that helps the kids in the refugee camp of Bethlehem express themselves in a peaceful way by trying to make them forget about their situation, i.e.being a child in a Palestinian refugee camp under Israelis occupation. See there the project they try to put up, whether it is the Debka troup performances, or the International summer camp allowing the kids but also the families to meet some volunteers coming from all over the globe. I arrived when their first children summer camp was ending and participated in the celebration organised by Lajee center to thank all children in what they have achieved together. Lots of laughter, and lots of hope especially when they see a foreigner witnessing it. I attended an aerobic class for ... read more

After a week’s worth of doctor’s visits and more than $1,000 worth of supplies, I’ve finally managed to book my flight to Nairobi. It’s an emotional moment, less for the unparalleled possibilities of six months in Africa than the irrefutable fact that my bank account has dwindled down to just a couple of hundred bucks. How I’ve reached this point is worth no small degree of speculation; how I can high-tail it in the other direction is, of course, of somewhat more pressing import. I’ve shared the good news of my impending departure with friends in Jerusalem, though I’ve kept to myself the less-savory truth that I’ll be learning what it means to live in Africa on an African budget. I meet an American one night at a café in Nachalat Shiv'a, a tall, ruddy ... read more

After our short stay in Tel Aviv, we drove to Jerusalem. This is a beautiful drive up into the hills through forests that have only existed since the State of Israel was founded. I had visited Jerusalem 13 years earlier, and much had changed since then; there was a lot that I did not recognize. The city is a mix of the old and new, the ancient is being rediscovered while the modern is being imposed around it, and we made the mistake of not obtaining a detailed map of the entire city prior to this part of our journey. We had maps of the country and major roads, and of the central city - so in between we ended up guessing, following the sun, and asking for directions. Fortunately, we did find people who ... read more

Roadtrip + JordanSo I figured out a way to type as much as i want before i actually use the internet so now I am going to write out a lot more as to what happened over the past week or so. I'll take you back to the road trip which started about 4-5 days after birthright and brought us from Tel-Aviv to Eilat. Mike, Aaron (a guy we met on birthright) and myself rented a car in the late afternoon and we headed up north towards the Golan hights in the hopes of reaching the city of Katzrin so Mike could exchange his 800 Shekel (200$) bottle of wine. Unfortunately, before we could even get past Tel-Aviv, Mike was already nodding off behind the wheel. After a quick coffee break we were back on the ... read more

On June 20 we departed for Israel on our long anticipated pilgrimage to the Holy Land. One of the precepts of the Bahá’í Faith is that each believer should try to make a pilgrimage to Bahá’í holy places at least once in their lifetime. Unlike the pilgrimages of other faiths, Bahá’ís must make a request for pilgrimage to the Universal House of Justice in Haifa. The UHJ is the nine-member body that governs the Faith internationally. Once you have made that request, you are placed on a waiting list, which usually takes about five to six years. This insures that the nine-day experience is maximized for the Bahá’í believers, who are given wonderful tours, with well-trained guides and have the opportunity to spend time with other Bahá’ís from all over the world who speak the same ... read more
