I’ve made arrangements to be in Jerusalem by Friday afternoon, but like a Facts of Life reunion, it’s a plan that looks far better on paper once it’s whirred into grim, regrettable motion. On Friday morning, having lazily worked my way through some old emails and a Nescafe, I get to Abdali Station just in time for a taxi driver to look at his watch, shake his head, and explain that the King Hussein Bridge border crossing into Jerusalem closes at noon for the shabat. It’s a perilously stupid start to my Israeli odyssey, one that - if you’ve come to know me by now - is bound to take a few more turns for the moronic before all’s said and done. I check back into the Palace Hotel, with a few light-hearted barbs for ... read more

Today was a lazy day, and was perfect. We had originally planned to leave for Jerusalem today, but changed our plans realizing that many places would likely be closed for Shavuot, and that roads would most likely be busy due to the holiday. So instead, we slept in, drove to Shai's house in the morning for Ro'i's 2nd birthday (yom huledet sameach!), and then came back to Kfar Vitkin. Noah wasn't feeling well and took a nap, and Josh and I proceeded to the beach for the entire day. Paradise... read more

Today was another great day. We began the day again with another hike to the Banias river. The waters here are a crystal clear blue colour and are beautiful and clean. We hiked from the Banias waterfall to the source at a spring beside some ancient ruins from the 1st century CE. Afterwards, we hiked back, and then drove up Mount Hermon to the Nimrod Fortress. This fortress is one of the best-preserved ruins in all of Israel and the Middle East. Later, we took a scenic route around the entire Golan and then stopped at a Druze village along the way for lunch. Josh and I had falafel which was excellent - Noah stuck to pita & hummus. We continued our trek through the Golan, and then drove along the Eastern shore of the Kineret ... read more

Today was a great day! We began the day with a hike part-way through a river - Nahal Gilabon. The trail was well marked but we decided to wade through part of the river as per Noah's directions. At the end of the hike, we ended up at a beautiful 10m high waterfall that fell into a small pond. The water was freezing but we decided to go swimming anyway and had a great time. After the hike we were pretty tired, but continued on to see Tzfat. We weren't very impressed - there wasn't much happening in the town, and the old Artists' Quarter was almost deserted. In the evening, we drove to the Eastern shore of the Kineret, and followed an off-road trail to a spot along the shore. We weren't the only ones ... read more

Today we got the car!!! Yos drove us to Netanya around noon and we picked up the car that Ilan had arranged for us. It's a brand new 2007 Nissan Micra, great small car. Once we were on the road, we headed up to the Galil to drive through Nazareth. This was mostly for Josh, but Noah and I had never been there either. Just before arriving in Nazareth we took a wrong turn and ended up in a small Arab village called Iqsal. It didn't take us long to figure out that we were in the wrong place. After a few strange looks, we headed back out to the main road and quickly found our way to Nazareth. Unfortunately, it was Sunday, and almost everything that we wanted to see was closed, but it was ... read more

Today was a slightly boring day for me - I have been to both of these places previously, but neither Josh nor Noah had been, so we visited them. We still had trouble getting the car so Ori took us and his kids on a day trip. I was still sick at this point so no time was really wasted. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AVIVA!!!... read more

Shalom, Sorry for the delay in getting out an update on our travels. Since were in Israel you may have suspected we had been shot or kidnapped, but no such luck. Since Tuesday morning we have visited the shopping district and Diaspora Museum in Tel Aviv. Been to Masada (cable car to King Herods mountain top palace/fortress in about mid 30's heat) and Ein Gedi (thermal spa), plus of course swam in the Dead Sea and I did manage to float. And of course Jerusalem. Sianne got interrogated at passport control, which was quite funny and I walked straight though. Don't really think much of Tel Aviv. It is the more modern city and has lots of these ugly 60's 3 or 4 storey apartment building that are in need of repair or demolition. Apparently they ... read more

well i'm still in israel so i'm not really sure what i should write about so i'll try to include some background about me and my trip, and some updates about what's going on recently. first, a more detailed itinerary of my trip: 13/06/07 - arriving to camp kutz, a summer camp of the jewish reform movement (a teen leadership camp), in warwick, NY. i'm gonna stay there until 13/08/07, being a security guard (i'll have a little time off during that time so i'll probably be a little in NYC too). then, my plans were to be in the NYC-boston area for about a month and then to tour the east coast until florida, but then my parents decided that they're gonna join me for about 3 weeks during this time, and since they don't ... read more

Last night Yos took us to see the new Refet (loose translation - dairy farm?). It was pretty amazing. Everything was completely automated, everything from milk measurements, to tracking cows, to showering - I saw a segment once on this system on How It's Made, and it looked like it was the same thing. An Israeli invention, naturally. My head was spinning last night though, I definitely picked something up in Turkey, and my stomach is not going to forgive me at least for another 2 days or so. Yet another unproductive day.... read more

Well it was bound to happen eventually over the course of the trip, and I'm glad it's now rather than later. I'm sick :( I think it was food poisoning from something I ate in Turkey - I've had food poisoning once before and this feels strikingly similar - classic flu-like symptoms on day 1, headache, dizziness, & upset stomach on day 2. If I'm right, I should be almost fine by day 3 and I can get back to enjoying this trip. Fingers crossed - I don't want my poor timing to ruin the trip for Noah and Josh. Today I slept in while Cecie & Yos, Ron & Debbie, and Noah and Josh are going for a day trip. I think they are visiting Haifa and Caesarea, but I could be wrong. I don't ... read more
