I’m not quite sure what to say for this post, other than I’ve gotten sick twice this week. It kinda sucked, for multiple reasons. First it’s not cool getting sick in another country when I’m trying to have fun and work. Second, it’s really hard to buy any type of over the counter medication when everything is in Hebrew. And I miss the US. Yea, there may be way too many Walgreen's but that means I don't have to look very hard to find one. One every 100 yards.... On Tuesday, I had some type of stomach bug/food poisoning so I had to skip out on my internship that day. I did tell Emily on the phone however that she could send me work at home and I would to it happily (as sitting in bed ... read more

sorry i have taken so long to do this. this trip has been completely overwhelming in very way. Never did I anticipate that within less than two weeks my whole world would come undone.. I came wanting to be challenged, in search of myself and to to refine my ideas. Rather than finding answers, I now have whole new sets of questions altogether.. have been eating so much, making so many amazing new friends and exploring the city. Got a little sucked into the insiduous hostel lifestyle and been grounded here in Tel Aviv since the program has ended. It has been magical, but given the limited time I have in this magical, mystical, mad country I need to move on. Today my two beautiful roomies and I are going to head to Haifa. I have ... read more

After nearly 30 hours of travel, I've made it safely to Tel Aviv and am relaxing at the hostel with Maija and our new friend and roomie Alitta, who is from Australia. Thankfully my voyage went really smoothly so when Maija met me at the airport I was all ready to settle into my stay in Israel. Because it was Saturday afternoon when I arrived, most businesses were closed. It gave me a really good chance to wander around without and pressure or crowds. Most people that I've met so far have just finished their Birthright trips, including Maija and Alita, so many of them who were in groups together already know each other. The people I've met so far have been great for the most part, and it was fantastic to just hang out on ... read more

So this is my long blog entry/short essay that Yehuda (my program director) said he wanted. It's a required part of the class. I figured I would post it here because it talks about my work in detail. I work at an organization called Windows: Channels for Communication. It is a non-profit organization that was started in Tel Aviv but now has chapters in America, France, and the UK. Technically the organization is also an NGO but the Tel Aviv chapter is only registered as an NGO in Israel and not America, the UK, or the West Bank. The mission of windows is to confront the barriers to dialogue between the multiple groups living in Israel, specifically the Palestinians and the Israelis. Windows focuses on trying to empower youth to challenge the status quo of the ... read more

I had an interesting conversation the other day with an Israeli. We were talking on the bus on Thursday (as the traffic gets all backed up because it is the start of the weekend) and had a lot of time to kill and got talking about sports. We talked about what sports we liked and I got a chance to gush about MLS and the Philadelphia Union and how American soccer is actually pretty good and is getting better and better all the time. I also mentioned how I was really sad that I ended up in Tel Aviv a week after the season ended here. He gave me a strange look and asked me which team I would have supported. I told him I didn’t know anything about the different teams but I often favor ... read more

So there were a lot of things that I could have written about this week but I decided to write about minorities. Or specifically how weird it is to be a minority for once in my life. At least a legitimate minority as I was pretty much in the political minority while I was in undergrad but it’s really not the same at all. I always took for granted the real lack of religiosity there is in the states. My area isn’t devoid of religion but it’s definitely not as upfront and in your face as it here. And I understand that in other parts of the US, such as the Bible Belt, religion is probably much more prevalent and overt. The most overtly religious things we have in my county are the Churches, as they ... read more

So I’ve been working on the birthright trip to the West Bank for a little while now and on this Tuesday I finally got to go. I’ve been working on it for about a week. The purpose of the trip is to take students and youth on birthright or on other government-sponsored trips to the West Bank so they can get another viewpoint on the conflict. We had a really small group, there were only six of us including Emily and me. Emily ran the tour and I went to experience it and help her. All in all it was a really good trip and I enjoyed it. We repeated a lot of what the GMU group did on the seminar, visiting refugee camps and talking to Palestinians. Since I had already heard a lot of ... read more

Something that has really been on my mind since coming to Israel is religion. And I know, it's a little bit redundant for me to say that because everything in this country is about religion, you can't get away from it. As a Christian, I am really confused about the lack of Christianity in this country. I know that there are a decent number of Arab Christians but I haven't met any white or anglo-saxon Christians yet. I feel like this demographic is really under-represented and I don't really get why. Another religion I don't understand is Islam. I don't mean to sound racist or prejudiced but I really don't understand the appeal. Our guide in Bethlehem, Hamdan, told us the story of how he his parents kept him locked in a room until he was ... read more

This weekend just about the entire group came to Tel Aviv. We all went out to dinner and to a bar later. It was a lot of fun and it was awesome to see everyone again. One thing I noticed this weekend was that we talked about the conflict a lot. And I mean a lot. In-between dinner and the bar we discussed the conflict. After the bar, waiting for taxis we talked about the conflict. Other people in the bars or restaurants will often add their opinions and they don't mind expounding upon them if you ask. I know I already talked about this but this conflict absolutely permeates this country. And Tel Aviv isn't near as bad as Jerusalem or the Settlements. I can't even really comprehend it. America has been involved in conflicts ... read more

So I've been at my internship for a couple days now and I really like it, especially compared to the stories that other people are telling about their internships. There is another intern there right now, named Laura and she is awesome! She helped me figure out the bus system and we've hung out a couple times already. There is another intern, Anais, who is french. She is really awesome and I love her accent. Emily is my internship supervisor and she is super nice. She's letting me pick my own projects, in addition to the couple projects they need done now. The first thing we did was sit down and talk about the NGO itself, what the program's mission was, my internship, my duties, and what I want to accomplish. I was a little worried ... read more
