שלום Shalom to all my good friends and family who will be following my experiences while I study here at Tel Aviv University. Upon my arrival here in Israel I've had a few technological difficulties, such as, forgetting my camera cord to recharge it's battery and then my laptop deciding to shut down with no way to reboot the darn thing. Besides those two things, all else is falling into place. This last week I started Ulpan here at the university. For those who don't know: Ulpan is an institute or school for the intensive study of Hebrew (wiki). My class here starts on Sunday and finishes Thursday every week. I must say, that getting up at 7:30 in the morning (especially on a Sunday) has not been the easiest thing to do. I don't understand ... read more

Once again I've decided to try and live in Israel. Last year, when I've decided to stay in Israel I did all the "right" things: a friend had helped me find a job that seemed like the perfect place for me to be in: a new, young company, in the area of solar energy. Only 4 people: myself and three guys. In the first week, when I was the one that complained about the heat in the office (the AC is on 25c, I'm wearing short sleeves, 3 guys in winter clothing) I've started getting the idea that there's something wrong here. In 2 month I've understood we don't speak the same language. The first thing I did was to get depressed, the second thing I did was to try and drown myself in work, thinking ... read more

Shalom one last time before I head home. I've been in Tel Aviv for a few days and have enjoyed myself like nothing else! 7/16 I found myself up around 7:30am and headed out to the Shuk HaCarmel and Nakalot Benyamin markets. The shuk is open every day, but the other is a sort of street fair/ flea market on Tuesday and Friday only. I was so pleased with myself for getting up early enough to get the best deals. Bummer that no one told me that nothing really happens until after 10. Nothing at all. So I window shopped Sheinkin street in the 85 degree weather and found a sweet little cafe to order my 9 am iced coffee. Bummer that no one told me that most of the icy machines don't start running until ... read more

So, I have a whole post written up about my recent trip to Jordan, but can't find my camera cord to retrieve the pictures. It's around somewhere, but in the meantime here's a quick run down (with pictures!) of my earlier trip to the central coast with my friend Alex. Alex did the Birthright program in May and did some work on a farm in June, so he had been in Israel for a while. We met up at the very end of his trip, and after a really fun night in downtown, modern Jerusalem (which was something new for me!) with some of his friends, we took the bus to Tel Aviv. From Tel Aviv we took the train north a bit to Binyamina; from there it was a short taxi ride to the famous ... read more

Wednesday 23 June Another summer’s day in Tel Aviv, and finally some bearable weather - only 29 degrees, a full 10 degrees cooler than the weekend, and not nearly as windy as yesterday. Still pretty hot out in the sun, but that oppressive, debilitating desert heat had lifted. We were booked in at the Palmach Museum presentation in two separate sessions, as Dean was too young to attend. Greg and I went to the 9.30 am session, which I found very interesting and informative. The material is presented in a very unusual manner compared with your normal museum. There are no information panels or exhibits behind glass. Instead, visitors move through a series of rooms which form the backdrop of various scenes in the history of the Palmach, or “Striking Force”. The story is presented on ... read more

Tuesday 22 June Yesterday morning we packed our belongings and vacated our Jerusalem abode. While not the height of luxury, the flat was very well located and it sufficed for our needs. The five major requirements we had when searching for accommodation on the internet were: 3 bedrooms, 2 toilets, air-conditioning, parking and position. Of course the price was also a consideration! I have realised that when travelling with kids (all kids or just my kids?) it is important to have a base to which you can return during the day for down-time. It is just too much for them to be on-the-go the whole day, day in and day out. Dean’s favourite activity during any free time is to tell car stories, or to get one of his brothers to tell him a car story. ... read more

Quickly, a list of 'firsts/highlights' that I don't want to forget (In no particular order): *Sunset in Tel Aviv (I am looking forward to many more throughout the region) *Shawarma for breakfast (They just can't get it right in the US!) *Taste of Gong (Artificially flavored grape drink that is oddly popular) *Getting locked inside the Tel Aviv Opera House on an evening wander *Shuk purchase, half-kilo of cherries and some zaatar pita for the beach *Sharing a spliff with a British photographer (works with OBD) and playing with his kitten, Mickey, who looks just like my Mickey (RIP) must have when he was still just over 1 pound *Meeting several Israelis who are perplexed about why anyone would want to visit Israel (Direct quote, "Miami & New York are incredible cities!") *Yoga on the plane ... read more

Got to Luton around 920am and Nathan had organised through the easyjet ticket desk which is run by Menzies a speedyboarding for me which came in quite handy... I bought 3 doughnuts from KrispyCreme and the guy said for another £1.45 I can get 3 more so guess what heheh. The flight was uneventful howevr during the decent to Tel Aviv there was a ligtning bolt which was a little scary but the cabin crew said don't worry it happens all the time. The Ben Gurion airport walk to the immigration area is very grand with a very tall ceiling and it looks really nice... I was expecting some excitement at the immigration as always but they asked me why I was visitng, for how long I was staying, my fathers name and my grand fathers ... read more

I am sure this applies to almost anyone when travelling with ELAL, or in and out of this world's most horrible, unfriendly and most security conscious airport, especially when someone asking stupid favour for not putting Israeli entry stamp on the passport, like me..... "May I request you don't stamp on my passport?" This is my major concern when I visiting Israel. "WHY???" A rude immigration lady replied" "Because I need to use this passport to visit Syria and Lebabnon next year." "Whaaaat ? NO! NO! Stand back!! Staaaaand Back!!!" I was so shocked with her reply, and I was immidiately detained to a small temporary room, next to me were loads of "innocent" travellers from The US, Canada, India and Russia, they were also asking the same stupid favour for not stamping on their passport. ... read more
