I\'m planning to go to Southeast Asia at the end of this year.

Is it possible to go from Thailand to India (New Delhi) by land?

Are there buses or trains?

Is it difficult if I cross Myanmar?

How long could take the trip? (if I make some stops to visit other places).

Any advice would be helpful.

Hello Gozub 😊

Myanmar is in chaos at the moment. I dont know if they are even giving out tourists visas. Even aid workers had/have trouble getting visas.

Burma.

It used to be possible to cross Myanmar and maybe will be again but I dont know how long that will take.
Oz bus take/used to take that route on their England to Australia trip so it used to at least be possible to go that way. Oz bus

Damn spammer!
Now back on topic.....
I should think its possible to do via China...you'll just need visa's for LaoPDR (or Cambodia), Vietnam, China, and Nepal or Pakistan....and of course, India. It really is the long way round, but until Burma changes, its virtually impossible to get permission to enter and exit there by land (even without the cyclone). Going via Tibet/Nepal may be problematic unless you are on some organised tour group, I've heard. The Karakorum H'way into Pakistan may be easier, but is even further.

Check this great blog for the reverse direction --

Their transit of Tibet makes a good read, but India isn't as bad as they make out...lol Reply to this

Yes, there are cheap flights from Thailand to India. You can buy a flight ticket and visa combo from an agent in Bangkok. You will have to leave your passport with them for around a week.

Yes, you can the visa for Vietnam from the Vietnamese consulate in Bangkok. It will take around 24 hours.

Yes, you can also get the visa for Pakistan at the Pakistani consulate in Bangkok. I dont know who long it takes. A few days, I think.

If there is a Chinese consulate in Bangkok, you will probably be able to get the visa there. Getting Chinese visas is generally straight forward.

I dont know about Nepal. Maybe somebody else here can answer that. Reply to this

Dsouza,

depending on which city in India you plan to fly from, there is a whole host of airlines. You can fly CAL - BKK on Airindia express, which is a low cost carrier.

If you are flying from Delhi,Mumbai,Chennai or Bangalore there is Jet Airways, Indian Airlines, Air India and Thai Airways.

Google them for their websites.

Hope this helps.

From Kolkotta to Bangkok is about 100 dollars I think... Maybe less, depends on the deal... I would presume the other way around would be a similar price...

Going from Bangkok to Delhi overland is possible via Laos, to China, then through Tibet and Nepal into India or via Pakistan as mentioned by Jim... Or via Cambodia and Vietnam into China... Visa's aren't hard to arrange and I think the trip would be worth it... Flying is fine, but you don't see very much...

Via Burma isn't possible overland, you can only enter Burma from China overland, you may not exit Burma to China overland! So the other way around you can go overland via Burma...

To go overland via Tibet to Nepal you will have to go with a tour by the way, Lhasa to Kathmandu, it costs I think 100 dollars or so... They don't allow independant travellers to cross the border... I guess the tour agency will arrange the visa for you, but if not I am pretty sure there must be a Nepali consulate in both Bangkok and Lhasa... Reply to this

alright,

i have just travelled from india through to thailand in fact no on my way to sumatra but it is possible. i went up into nepal but as they closed the border into tibet had to fly to chengdu. if you are going from thailand you can head up northern thailand to chang mai and from there catch a bus to chang rai. from here you can get a bus to the border of loas. i went down the mekhong on boat through loas from a place in china called Jing Hong. fron Jing Hong you can get a bus to Kunming and from there north towards chengdu. only issue now is the earthquake aftermath so might be tricker to travel. i think the borders are open now through to tibet, but you need to get on a tour with some other people. from tibet(Lhasa) you can travel by bust to Nepal Kathmandu and from there to Varanassi in India. Varanassi in India to Dehli by bus or train should be no problem. should take about four months but you need visa for China before you cross the border. everywhere else they stap on entry.

hope all that helps Reply to this
