Central and South American Borders

We will be travelling through Central and South America in 2011 in a vehicle. Does anyone have any reasonably up to date advice on any difficulties encountered in crossing various borders. We are particularly interested in insurance requirements and the need for carnet or not.

We will be travelling through Central and South America starting either late 2010 or early 2011. Our plan is to travel through from the US to Mexico, down through Central America, send the vehicle in a container across the Darien Gap and then on down through South America. We haven't yet decided on precisely which way we will go.

We have read warnings about what might happen and we take those on board but really we would like more specific info on the need for insurance and whether carnet can be useful, or is in fact required, in any of the countries. There seems to be conflicting information about these. Reply to this
