Overlanding 3 kids...possible?

Is it possibly to go one an overland trip with three kids?
7 years ago, September 24th 2016 No: 1 Msg: #198181
My husband wants to start planning an overland trip for spring of 2019 going from East coast USA to west Coast USA, we currently have one daughter and our second child on the way. We have a 2007 Jeep Wrangler (LJ) and a 2003 Toyota 4Runner. My husband thinks if I get pregnant a 3rd time between having this baby and the trip, we won't be able to go because you can't overland with 3 kids. I know the jeep is ideal for traveling that way but there's only two back seats. The 4Runner can fit 3 across in the back seat and has a large cargo area. I think it's doable. My husband thinks it would be miserable and if we get pregnant we have to give up the dream. Has anyone in here done a trip like this with 3+ kids? Is it doable and enjoyable or is my husband right in thinking it's not something that can be done Reply to this

You can make anything happen. 3 kids requires a bit of planning.

There are lots of people traveling with kids,it can be done! Like Mary Jo said, it just requires a bit of planning.

You can have a look at these bloggers for inspiration:

We traveled extensively with our three young children.
Here's one when they were 1, 3 and 5: Home leave to the Western United States.
You would need a car that seats three in the back, of course. After that it's just a matter of deciding where to visit. Here's another when they were a bit older, but has an itinerary for our three week trip from Washington DC to California and back: Summer Vacation - Cross Continental Road Trip
In the meantime, you might consider taking a few shorter trips around the east so that you children can get used to longer drives in the car. You could look at my other blogs for suggestions.

However, I'm a bit concerned about your husband's statement that you won't be able to go if you have a third child. Having a third child really wouldn't stop you from going. He knows you want both a third child and the trip and he's asking you to chose one or the other. This may be his way of saying he doesn't want a third child. I apologize for raising this as a possibility if it's not so. Reply to this

I believe its really not a problem at all. If you really want to pursue your trip, why not? Even if you have 3 or more kids, I'm sure there will be a proper place to visit for a family like yours that are child friendly. Its really not an issue for me. Maybe, if given a chance you will have a 3rd baby before the year 2019 comes, he's concern is the health and condition of the baby. If its ok for the baby or if a two year old to be travelled already. Reply to this
