We've just come back from a week at Tywyn in our tents. I almost didn't come back, it was so lovely, but thunder was forecast and I didn't want to spoil such a nice week by getting hit by lightning. Anyway, we stayed pretty close to the camp site as there are plenty of walks to do, and of course the sea, and the honey ice cream shop to be visited. We saw the waterfalls at Dolgoch, Alex and Ineke climbed Cader Idris, and we even took the canoe to the river. Lots of pictures - the good ones are Alex's, of course.... read more

Alex had a day off work yesterday, so after I'd pushed Mum along the canal and back, we set off on a jaunt to the very start of the Montgomery canal, where it joins the Llangollen canal. I knew there are a series of locks there that become a staircase - only 4, but quite impressive. Mind you, if you've seen the 23 locks at Devizes you might not be that impressed. It was lovely there, but I didn't take the camera and the phone was running low on battery so the photos look gloomy. In case you're interested the Montgomery canal was built mostly to get lime into Wales (for improving the fields) and wool and flannel out. It is 35 miles long, stretching from Lower Frankton near Ellesmere to Newtown. These days you cant ... read more

Its been a busy week in our community. First we had an evening where we learned how to make the "perfect" hanging basket. Gwyneth brought compost and lots of small plants, and gave us the benefit of her experience. All we had to do was follow the instructions. We shall see how well I did in a month or so. They look ok so far! Then this morning a lot of us got up early and took to the hills for a dawn chorus walk. It was a bit misty but dry, and we heard lots of chorussing! We walked a little over a mile, taking in the healing properties of a well above Meifod, before heading back too the Old School where Megan kindly had a big breakfast ready. Home again by 9.30, feeling that ... read more

Suddenly it feels as if summer might be on the way. In case this should happen, I bought a beautiful picnic basket recently, which today we filled with goodies and took with us on an expedition to the Kerry Ridge, an ancient trackway along the top of a nearby ridge. Wonderful views of the Welsh mountains one way, and the rolling hills of Shropshire the other.... read more

well, it used to be called the dingy dawdle in the old days, and we have fond memories of cheerful boaters (including coracles) dawdling along the canal for the day, just for the fun of it. but its turned into something huge and fast, and is now a triathlon - you cycle 14 miles, boat 11 miles and walk 10, and its a race. Its quite a spectacle it must be said, but has become a bit of a dash, and seems to lack the camaraderie. Anyway, Alex and Ineke took part in the new Canadian canoe, and they dawdled about 6 miles and enjoyed it. Until some very strong wind got up and made progress difficult. So then I picked them up. I feel pretty weather beaten and all I did was walk a bit ... read more

It was a glorious spring day so Mum and I walked down the canal into town and ended up in Tescos to buy Easter eggs. There was a chilly wind when the sun went in, so that's why she's so well wrapped up.... read more

The storm we had on Feb 12th not only took a bit of our roof, but also broke the front door. The roof was urgent, so repaired quickly. The door I sealed with plastic feed bags filled with newspaper, so we were fine. Just couldn't open the door. BUT this weekend we got a spanking new PVC job - it took a long time for me to decide that's what I needed, and it will take a while to get used to a white door instead of wooden. But practically its sensible, and I just need a lick of paint round the porch and we're done.... read more

Well, we got the boat to water. Unfortunately, Ineke had to work, so she couldn't come yesterday. And it really needs two people to balance it - as you can see. But Alex negotiated the swans and 2 narrow boats, and paddled up the canal to the Rhallt, where I brought Mum out to look. And another resident called Brian came along to see as well. Happy days - and here's to the start of a summer of bell tents and canoes!... read more
