well, its not hard to test mine! However we went along to our community quiz night last night for an evening of unanswerable questions interrupted by silly things to do! Took a bottle of wine - the next table even had silver drinking goblets- and some nibbles, and enjoyed the company whilst feeling that there is still so much about the world that I don't know, even at my ripe old age. We had to draw the Mona Lisa from memory, draw a sheep and mark on where the joints of meat come from ( I would say that was from memory, but more like guesswork), construct a long line of dolls from newspaper and make plasticene models of famous people. Oh, and eat home made cake and drink tea.... read more

We decided to open all the family presents once Sophie and Tom arrived, so yesterday we took over one of the sitting rooms at the Rhallt Nursing home and stuck into opening time. Great fun, and of course, toys to be played with this year! Sue and Jerry arrived too, on route to visit her sister, so it was extended family. and tea and chocolate biscuits too! ps the sunroom roof is mended, ready for the next lot of gales - forecast for later tonight.... read more

well, the big day has been and gone, and I hope you all had as good a time as we did. Here are some photos of our Christmas day. I popped down to see Mum, and Dad had his dinner there with her. Alex called after lunch as he had to work in the morning. Then, Alex and I went to the sea on Boxing day, and tonight Sophie, Tom and Martha are arriving, and we will be partying at the Rhallt tomorrow. We've had some good gales here, and we need to repair the roof of the sunroom which is waving about wildly, and letting the rain and cold air in. Its still too rough to do much. Lets hope for a calmer day tomorrow. Many people have had a lot worse, poor things.... read more

This morning I'd booked a taxi/minibus to take Mum out to look at the Christmas decorations in our local garden centre. I hadn't told her previously so it was a big surprise, but she was up for it and although she looked tired afterwards, I think she enjoyed it. That's the first time we've taken her out for ages, but now we've found a taxi man who can deal with a wheelchair, the world's our oyster.... read more

today we were on the border between England and Wales, so I daresay we've been in a bit of each. There is a huge ring of 14 lime kilns with an enormous chimney near here, and we thought we'd go for a walk in that direction and have a look. The kilns are in a ring, and as they emptied the first one, they filled the last, so work went on day and night. Must have been fiery. Also, there are inclined planes from the stone quarry to the kilns, and of course the canal to bring coal and take away the lime. It must have been very busy here once upon a time.... read more

When I called on Mum yesterday, she'd just had her hair and nails done and I took some photos as she looked so chipper. Then Dad came for tea, otherwise we never see each other, and after eating we had a Wii game of bowls. Once Dad and I got the hang of it, we enjoyed ourselves so much that we played a second round.... read more

Last night we got together in the old school and made some Christmas decorations. Its a lovely evening of meeting friends and neighbours, trying to be artistic and generally making a mess! This has turned into an annual event, very popular and well attended. Its such good fun. Of course, there's a bit of work finding the holly, ivy, moss and sundry bits. But worth it.... read more

We woke to find a sharp frost and a dusting of snow this morning - the first this winter - but also sun and blue sky. As the hills looked as if they'd stay white all day, we opted for a canal walk, and were rewarded with some beautiful autumn tree colours. The beeches have been glorious for a couple of weeks, but the oaks are only just changing.... read more

Many years ago, King Offa of Mercia decided to make a clear boundary between England and Wales, and came up with a ditch and wall, surmounted by a wooden stockade. It stretched form north to south more or less along the Welsh border. There's not a great deal to be seen today, though there are still some visible remains. But there is a long distance footpath along the entire length - not always exactly on the dyke though. and Ineke and I walked a part today, up to the top of a local hill, as it was all blue sky and sunshine.... read more
