Alex had a day off today, so we were up for a potter round somewhere. But before we left, he had a trip to the doctor to remove an enormous splinter from under his little finger nail. Ouch. We couldn't get it, so it was a job for the professionals. Anyway, then we popped down to Welshpool, and out the other side, up Long Mountain - where there are some caches hidden. We got 3 nice walks out of it, and explored some lanes we didn't even know were there. We took the dog, but had to drag her for the3rd walk! Poor old thing. As we came back through town, we were just at the right time for fish and chips. A good day was had by all.... read more

Although we are only a very small community, we decided to have a village show this year. We had an exhibition of knitting, embroidery and wooden toys, and competitions for some pretty daft things, like ugliest veg and longest bean. And just so we didn't take it too seriously, we allowed the kids to be judges. Then we all had tea and cakes, followed by some fun and games outside - yes, we "closed" the road, but as it happened nothing wanted to pass for that hour anyway! And the sun shone. We all voted it a great success.... read more

The Bank Holiday dawned glorious, so we thought we'd walk a bit of The Shropshire way near Oswestry. This part of the way is along an old tramway that once took coal from nearby mines down to the canal. Mostly it was obvious where it ran. I really like these old relics of a bygone age. We'd never been there before - so have the caches to thank. Then, when we got home I suddenly felt really poorly and had to take to my bed. Today I don't feel much better, but Alex is keeping me supplied with cups of tea, so hoping for a quick recovery.... read more

At the end of Lake Vyrnwy is a valley with a high waterfall. As Alex had a day off today, and the sun shone, we thought we'd take a picnic. And by chance there were some caches to be found, all named after birds, since the area is managed by the RSPB. We found all but one, and the heron took ages! We also found a giant Douglas Fir. Or was it the remains of it? Anyway, a good day out was had. Though it would have been even better if one of us had remembered to take some matches, since we had everything else to make a cup of tea!... read more

It seems to have been rather busy here, both before and since my birthday, but certainly never boring. I must say that retirement is pretty good. Sophie, Tom and Martha made the day extra special by calling in - for one night only - on their way back from Dorset where they had been visiting Tom's mum. And I started the day with a treasure hunt, because of my present obsession with geocaching. And I was able to keep the clues because they were special little containers to hide my own caches. Except, I like them so much I don't know if I can send them out into the world by themselves. Ineke, Alex and I were camping on the field for a week too. We had planned to go to Bala, but it was just ... read more

This is such fun! There are caches all over the world to be found, and you just need a map and GPS to find them. Some are tiny, the size of a finger nail, others are more like army chests. But they are all well hidden - if not disguised, so that even if you know more or less where they are, its not always easy to spot them. Yesterday afternoon Alex found one that had been puzzling us for a week, camouflaged as the top of a litter sign. Another one we found after answering 74 pub-quiz type questions and encoding the answers to get the co-ordinates. (luckily my nephew Tom had explained how to get the GPS on my phone to work! ) Even then, the thing was so tiny it took a while ... read more

We've had a lovely week with Tom, Sophie and Martha, and really done so much and seen so many friends and relations we hardly had time to take photos! However, one day we went white water rafting near Bala. This was my wedding present to Sophie and Tom, but due to Martha's arrival, it couldn't be taken till now. Alex decided to go too, and Mum and Dad came to watch, so it was a real family day out. So there are photos of that, as well as other bits. Well, just have a look.... read more

Ineke and I have just spent a very hot and sunny few days camping by the sea - on the same camp site that Alex and I went to. We spent a fair bit of time in the sea, but managed to rouse ourselves for a bit of activity too. Luckily there was a nearby Co-op so we didn't have the trouble of trying to keep food cool in such high temperatures. We just visited the shop 3 times a day to buy food and cool down in there. Lynda came along for a while too.... read more

Our neighbour Joan discovered a small swarm of honey bees on her wall today, so called a pest remover to collect them. As they are not really pests, he just took them to a new home in some woods nearby - just far enough that they won't return to Joan.... read more

Another hot sunny day dawned, so Ineke and Alex - both having a day off - decided it would be a good time to canoe along the canal, beneath the trees. We took a picnic and had a lovely time. PS. I forgot to mention in my last blog that when Martha wakes up she spends ages chatting to herself, and then when Sophie goes in to her, she waves her arms a legs madly in excitement. I was telling Mum this, and she said "just what you used to do" . So my little grand daughter takes after me a bit. Yippee.... read more
