September 6th - 9th -- Inverness Traveled again on the train from Edinburgh to Inverness. I slept for much of the way -- the rumble of the engines along with the rocking back and forth of the train just lulls me to sleep and I find it almost impossible to keep my eyes open. If someone could find a way to install this in my bedroom, I would pay dearly for it! We stayed in a lovely B&B called the Bluebell House operated by Margaret and Neil. Inverness straddles the river Ness with some lovely walking paths and bridges. All the restaurants we ate at looked out over the river. One restaurant was in fact called The River - the food was delicious! We visited a number of places including a scotch distillery. The Benromack Distillery ... read more

We got up at a decent time again, and had another quick, cold breakfast of cereal and fruit so that we could get out to the practice range one last time before we left St. Andrews. We picked up the shuttle to the course that drove right past our B&B and we were there in 5 minutes (it's generally about a 25 minute walk). There, Cor and I each got 50 balls and rented a club (I lied before, the balls were 3.50GBP and the club was 2.50GBP). Afterwards, we picked the shuttle up outside the practice range. As we were waiting for more possible passengers, a Coke truck came up behind the shuttle, honked it's horn, and in response, the shuttle (with its door open) whipped around the parking lot in a dangerous fashion and ... read more

We drive to Inverness through heavy rain. Water cascades off the hills, streams carry mud down into plunging rivers. It takes two hours to cover the seventy-five miles. In the mobile phone shop, the two young assistants require ID in the name of Jane's company before they'll give her a new SIM card. Being on holiday, we have no business cards. Jane can show e-mails addressed to her at her company on her phone, but they need a credit card or a piece of paper. They're really sorry but they can't do anything without ID: it's for our data protection. After our drive, we're not giving up easily. There's some discussion between the assistants, who are trying to be helpful. At last they decide they can do it if Jane gives her password. Unfortunately, they don't ... read more

All over Scotland I saw old houses, most of the houses are old, with really a lot of chimneys on a row. How they use that? Sometimes up to 10-15 chimneys on a roof. Still from the time every room has his own open fire? Today , July 26th, I ll take the afternoon train to Aberdeen to board the ferry to Lerwick, Shetland Islands. Wonder what kind of size the ferry has and what kind of waves we ll meet. It will take about 12 hours to reach Lerwick where my first tour starts wednesday morning at 9.30... read more

Arrived sunday july 24th in Inverness with the coach from Fort William. Weather was speldid and I made a long walk along the river Ness.Guesthouse Ardconnel is a small 6 rooms guest house. Beautiful interior but rather small room and they need to invest some in matrasses. Kind people. On monday I went on a long daytour, 14 hours, to Orkney Islands. First 2,5 hours by coach, than you reach John O Groats where the ferry to Orkney just arrived. John O Groats started his live as dutch Jan de Groot.. On that spot you can see also the last house of Scotland and the distance to London will be about 1000 km from there. The day was cold, real cold, with some rain in the morning. The ferry to Orkney only takes about 45 minutes and ... read more

Hello, Today we had lots of driving. We drove about 90 minutes to the home of golf (St. Andrews). We wandered through the cathedral ruins. We then wandered through the city for awhile. The beach was lovely. We then went for lunch 90 minutes away at a place I can't recall the name of. There was an optional tour of a whisky distillery. Some of us who didn't want to go in there wandered around together after lunch. I did some shopping and got a fleece jacket as well as some tartan plaidish scarves. We then had a two hour drive to a place outside of Inverness where we are spending the night before going to the nearby Loch Ness Lake to see the Loch Ness monster. Here are my shout outs for this blog: Aunty ... read more

Isle of Skye Our travels from Fort William to Isle of Skye took us past one of the more famous castles (told you there where plenty of them). Another 15th century clan stronghold, you may remember Eilean Donan from such famous appearances as 'Castle' in the Highlander movie... if not - it's a lovely castle surrounded by water and thankfully accessible by bridge. The appeal to the castle is not just that it's still more or less fully in tact, but that it is still used as a residence today. Perhaps more of a holiday home (?) as they are not there permanently. But this allows us to visit not just a castle steeped in history but also one used in the modern day. Fort Augustus After a night's stay in Isle of Skye, we paid ... read more

104 miles Well what can I say? We did it. In the planning this was the day about which I was most doubtfull. Not only for myself but I had in mind Ewen's cycling max was 60 miles. Ewen started the day in pain from the fact his knees do not react well to pedalling up hills for hours and hours. The day was full of adventure including finding the cycle route closed and forcing us on to the A9 which is very busy and quite intimidating to a cyclist. We caused aq bit of a tailback before we prematurel joined what was the cycle route but was now in the middle of the building disruption that goes on in any major road works. The climb was long and hard over the Cairngorms and the highest ... read more

We’ve left England twice now. Wales and now Scotland. Words don’t really do justice to the beauty of both Wales and Scotland. I have already referred to the beauty of Northern Wales and Snowdonia. The drive from Glasgow to Inverness has to be one of the most breathtaking journeys imaginable. Loch Lomond followed by the highlands where peaks rise out of nowhere and streams and lakes appear without warning to be followed by picturesque storybook valleys of green and sheep and cows; and finally Loch Ness, barely a km wide at its widest point and a staggering 760 feet deep at its deepest. This is a wild land. Like Wales it is inhabited by people who have a wild streak. The Loudon Wainwright concert we saw in Glasgow was constantly punctuated by loud deep Scottish brogue ... read more
