Well, we've been in Inverness for a long time and figured we've posted about a lot of our trips out, but very little about the time we've actually spent in and around our temporary home. Here's a wee shout out to this town, and the wonderful people we've met while here (unfortunately not all of them, just some who left the biggest impressions). We arrived here September 4th, 2010 with no plans other than 'find work' and 'find somewhere to live'. We were exhausted after our 2 months of traveling and wound up lazing around most of the time. While slothing around the hostel we got to know the lads that worked there a little; there was managing Aussie Jeremy, Welsh Hywel (pronounced 'howl' from what we could tell), and another Aussie Lachie. There were also ... read more

Well, our last day in Inverness was the 30th. It was also the most eventful of our stay; it rained the rest of the time we were there. Note to self, if I want to travel the UK and Ireland again I should do it between April and September since those are the only months that it doesn't rain 28 days of the month. Ah, but when the sun comes out there's nothing prettier. We went out to the Loch Ness. We haven't been anywhere in Scotland that hasn't been beautiful, especially when the sun is shining like it was that day. I'm pretty sure we saw Nessie... Or at least we think that she likes to play tricks with the tourists and follows behind tour boats. (No comments about boat wakes :P) Even if we ... read more

Hey hey, everyone. We are in not-so-sunny Inverness now. The ride up on the bus was just as gray and rainy as the others, but oh the scenery! First of all, it seems that the landscape in the highlands is made for gray and rainy, but maybe that's just because of the time of year. Secondly, it is gorgeous. It's not something I can describe very well; there were so many huge evergreens, and the ferns were turning from green to orange to red. We crossed shallow, little streams every few minutes, and the top of the hills were hidden by thick clouds of mist. The city is a bit of a disappointment. We were hoping for a small, Scottish town and, instead, we have a fairly large port city. Eh, not that impressive. Naturally, it's ... read more

Our closest city is Inverness, the base that so many tourists use to visit the Highlands. Its perched on the River Ness, which drains from Loch Ness to the Moray Firth. You can travel by boat from the East coast of Scotland across to the West coast through a series of locks and lochs! Some of the lock systems are up to seven locks high, enabling a boat to travel upstream through a series of steps and into the lochs. Its interesting to watch the boats go up or down this watery escalator. Inverness is a reasonably compact city dominated by a castle on the rivers edge with a number of bridges across the river, canal and firth connecting the suburbs with the city centre. We check out the loal music scene at Hootenanny's pub, a ... read more

Day 35 Inverness - Lairg 56 miles 1128 miles A poor days weather led to a bit of a cheat cycling wise. Yet more rain so made the decision to opt out of the cycling and take a rail excursion to kyle of Lochalsh. A wonderful scenic route with enough time in Kyle to have a short explore. Returning to Inverness there was time to have a bit of a look around the city before catching a late afternoon train up to Lairg Still wet when I got to Lairg so I guess I'm just going to have to come back to do this piece!... read more

Geo: 57.4767, -4.23145July 5, 2010Laggan, Scotland5:30-8:00 a.m.I slept so well last night that I woke up at 5:30 a.m. in exactly the same position that I fell asleep in! I kept the windows open last night, but closed the drapes so the midges (biting insects) wouldn't get into the room. I dressed very warm today by wearing my thick blue jeans and socks. I made sure I had my rain poncho available in my carry-on bag. We had the normal English breakfast. The scrambled eggs were runny so I had a larger helping of it. After boarding the bus we headed off to our next stop, the Clava Cairns.8:00-10:45 a.m.Croy, ScotlandWe passed over the River Spey and Newtonmore, where we were supposed to have a Drambuie toast to Bonnie Prince Charlie and hear some pipes in ... read more
