I kept the windows open last night, but closed the drapes so the midges (biting insects) wouldn't get into the room. I dressed very warm today by wearing my thick blue jeans and socks. I made sure I had my rain poncho available in my carry-on bag. We had the normal English breakfast. The scrambled eggs were runny so I had a larger helping of it. After boarding the bus we headed off to our next stop, the Clava Cairns.8:00-10:45 a.m.Croy, ScotlandWe passed over the River Spey and Newtonmore, where we were supposed to have a Drambuie toast to Bonnie Prince Charlie and hear some pipes in ... read more

.June 22, 2010 We left Toronto for Gatwick on Thomas Cook Airlines. The plane had a delay from Oslo and was delayed two hours. We finally left at 2240. What a great airline inspite of the delay.. It is roomy with lots of leg room, friendly air hostesses and good food. We picked up our car rental to find they had upgraded us to a Mercedes Benz SUV with a GPS. Thank heavens for being told what to do! Driving on the left hand side of the road is tricky but it is amazing how fast we learn. Our first stop for lunch was at a small Scottish Deli in Pitalochy. We ate outside admidst all the charm of the old buildings and twisty streets. After lunch we visited the Fish Ladder where 5000 salmon a year ... read more

Thursday brought a beautiful day with temps in the 50's and low 60's. Our first stop of the day was at THE DALMORE, our first Distillery Visit of the trip. WOW, what a treat!!! Nothing like the smell of the mashtun and the fermenting tanks. After a great tour of the distillery, we were able to taste a dram of the 15 yr old. Amazing!! From there we headed north to Tain to see the Glen Morangie Distillery. This one was the only distillery that allowed us to take pictures. It was the only one we visited in which the whisky is not sent out for blending. They are the number 4 distillery in Scotland. After a good time there, we headed down through the country to Lock Ness and Urquhart Castle. From here we got ... read more

INVERNESS Day 94 Today is the big day. That is, it is the day I will hunt for Nessie. I hopped my bus to Drumnadrochit, which is the main spot to start looking for Nessie. I began with a walk along the Great Glen Way, which is a really long walking path but I only did about an hour of it in and then walked the hour back out. It was a really nice walk through the highlands. All of the trees have this moss that grows on them. I don’t know if it is some tree disease or just a harmless moss that grows on everything. But it does give an eerie feel to the forests. It was raining off and on all morning but not enough to deter me from my day out. ... read more

INVERNESS Day 93 Nessie here I come! I spent another few hours on trains in order to get to Inverness. It was raining on my arrival but the town is cute and quaint. And even though it is a smaller town it still has the feel of a big city town by having all the amenities readily available and lots of public transit coming and going at all times. I found my hostel quickly and went for a walk around town while I still had some day light hours. I stopped by the tourist office to get info on how to find Nessie. I went back to the hostel and met some fellow travelers, one very interesting one in particular. MacKenzie has been traveling for the last 15 years, since he retired actually. He is ... read more

This blog is also written by Chris and, of course, edited by me. “Why on earth would you ever want to go to Scotland?” asked an English friend of Kate's. We now know the reason why: it's the UK's best-kept secret. UNESCO calls Edinburgh - yes, the entire city - a World Heritage site due to its impressive architecture, which seamlessly blends modernity with ancient structures. Edinburgh Castle, atop the Castle Rock, is still used as an army barracks and national memorial. Various cathedrals dot the Royal Mile. And we saw everything about 300 meters up after climbing the Sir Walter Scott monument, whose impressive height makes up for the excessively narrow circular staircases that forced me to turn sideways in order to scale them. Editor's note: Either Chris is horrible at estimation ... read more

We went Kilcoy mains and had a look around. We saw lots of oil rigs in the ocean and we saw springs and lots of long hair highland cows. It was a fantastic sunset. Our last day in Scotland is clear blue sky and in the 60's. A great way to end our week of Loch monsters, castles, battlefields, shopping, fish and chips, salmon from the River Ness, Haggis every morning, and even the occasional Chinese restaurant Ernest managed to find to get his fix, along with the one-pond store. Another generation of Chou's is now officially married in Scotland. Some of you may not be aware that Ernest's parents, James and Nellie, were married in Glasgow at the end of World War II when they were students here. That adds another special connection to getting married here beyond just my childhood dream and my Celtic ancestry (although this week has been all about me, let's be honest). Due to popular demand, mostly my big brother, we were able to ... read more
