We grabbed a car at the Edinburgh airport nice and early (a VW none the less) and headed north. Our first destination St Andrews for a game of golf. We took the scenic route along the coastline to see amazing scenery and stopped off in Anstruther for some fish and chips at The Wee Chippy, before continuing to our first destination. Unfortunately Andy and Dale didn’t get their game, being that a round was $280 per person, so they opted for a $5 course tour instead, while the girls took a wonder round the St Andrews Castle and gift shop. Back in the car we headed towards Inverness when we stumbled onto a little town called “Blair Athol”. Typically we just happened to have arrived on the busiest weekend of the year and their was no ... read more

We left Invergarry to visit Loch Ness - Nope didn't see it.... We tried! Went thru the visitor center which was informative. Now we are off to the Culloden battelfield. For those of you who do not know - This was the last hand to hand battle in Great Britain between the government and the Jacobites (Bonnie Prince Charlie - the true heir to the throne). Very moving.... They had a very detailed visitor center that showed every facet of the history and cause of the batlle which shaped religion, monarchy and europe itself. They also had a personal GPS system which described the battle in detail as you walked thru the battle field. It made that much more of an impact to stand where these men died. Stood beside the Campbell clan marker. As we ... read more

Left the spanish hotelBarcelo Carleton) in Edinburgh this morning to head for Invergarry. As I had to walk 2 blocks to the rain (that's th way it should be - 1 day nice 1 day rain - well only the morning) We drove along the motorway up to Perth and turned westward toward the Highlands. OK now I appreciate the term Highlands. In some of our pictures you are going to see white dots (resolution not good enough to zoom) you are going to have to trust us - they are sheep. Very Isolated out here. Pulled off to the side of the road and no one passed us for 5 minutes. Elke made a friend at the side of the road. It was so quiet you could hear the sheep from a long ways off. ... read more

The last the day in Edinburgh was spent walking around the New City. It was going to be heading out to see Rosalyn Chapel, made famous by Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, but after finding out that the bus takes an hour to get out there and another back (and I only had until 4pm before my train to Inverness), I gave it a miss. The New City, on the opposite side of Princes Street Gardens, was the city built when the Old City was too full and disease ridden to live in in any numbers any more. They did a good job with it though. The streets are spaced around parkland and all the ones that run down to the gardens have monuments in the centre islands. This side of the city has become ... read more

After getting our canal license, and paying for the marina, we went into the town for a look and a bit to eat. Inverness is a nice place with old houses situated on either side of of the river Ness, though it is very apparent that tourism is a major part of its income. On the fourth of july when we finally got out of the boat we went out and walked around town by our selves. Later I met Jørgen and Olav, who finally got the sail jacket, that he had ordered before leaving Norway, it was only two days until he would leave the boat and would not have much use for it in this lovely wether, but it was a bargain. We sat down at a cafe where we met Arne and ordered ... read more

First of all a general obeservation: Driving over here is a breeze... speed up when people are crossing the road, pull off to the side so oncomming traffic can make it by you(on public roads) and and dammit stay on the left hand side of the road (unless you're parking of course, then it doesn't really matter). So the last couple of days have be somewhat uneventfull... not at fault of ours, but mostly due to food or a virus(we're not sure which). On Friday, Brigid, Skye (Brigid's baby), Jelna (Brigid's Mom), Michelle and I went into Aberdeen for a little tour around and some lunch (John had to work). We then went back to Brigid and John's house for a relaxing evening in front of the TV. On Saturday Michelle and I went to go ... read more

Today I woke up had some McDonalds for breaky!! They have cappachinos here kinda funny but tastes way better than the shit coffee. It was more like Scottish weather today kinda overcast but the rain held off. I managed to talk the hostel guy into giving me a sweatshirt so that I could fend off a bit of the weather because the Bedford never sent me anything saying we have your jacket. GREAT being in Scotland thats the ONE thing you need is a rain jacket and I had nothing of the sort. Oh well here we go. Took the train to Perth even though I wasn't scheduled to leave till 530 I took the 11am haha fuckers. It worked too I was a bit scetch watching for the conductor to come round but he never ... read more

Today we began our adventure beyond Aberdeen. After breakfast and seeing the boys off to school, Alex drove us to the airport where our chariot awaited us. Our chariot was, in fact, a compact automatic with GPS. Jer was a tad bit nervous about driving on the wrong side of the road. He learned to drive on the left side as a teenager while he was in Australia, but that was (literally for him) half a lifetime ago. Scotland also is far less populated and lacks round-abouts. Scotland is all round-abouts. We hopped into our brand new econo car (less than 400 miles on it!), plugged in our brand new GPS, entered our first destination—a castle—and were on our way! Jer negotiated the first round-about skillfully and we soon were in the countryside on twisting roads. ... read more

Scotland! 12/05/2009 O what a beautiful morning! O what a beautiful day! You know the rest of the song! We woke up at 7h00 this morning, and the sun was already shining. We still have no idea what time it get’s dark since we fell asleep at 23h00 and it was still dawnish outside!! We both saw Nessie today, but not at the same time and was too stunned to take any pictures, but we will try again tonight. Once again the view from the room is spectacular! After breakfast we’re off to do our first official castle tour! Surrounded on 3 sides by water Urquhart Castle must be one of the most beautiful ruins in Scotland despite its bloody history. Walking through the enchanting castle you can’t help but wonder about the lifestyles of the ... read more

Last night was very fun as I went out with Kate (my roommate from Australia) and her friends from Glasgow. I had a great time at a bar called Moskito (even in Scotland I can't get away from Moskitos!). One of Kate's friends works as a primary school teacher in Glasgow and her boyfriend works as a chef. I had some delicious cider and some chips with sauce and pizza. I really like fashion in England and Scotland, especially for night life. Everyone is wearing some kind of cute bright dress or long shirt and leggings (again very bright) with HUGE earrings and high pumps. Love it! I woke up today and got ready to leave the hostel. Little did I know how easy it would be to see the things I didn't get to see ... read more
