Bruges 24/05/2009 Our day started with a couple of flights of stairs from our attic room down to the breakfast area and ground level. It takes some serious consentration to navigate down the narrow stairs without getting your footing wrong. Leon had a couple of close calls and almost bought the farm/hotel twice. Breakfast consisted of the usual, bread, cold meats, cheese, yoghurt, fruit juice, and tea. You eat like it’s your last meal because a day of exploring can be extremely tiring so we need the energy, and it helps that everything at the buffet table is fresh and yummy. We had 3 must-do items on our list for the day, Salvador Dali exhibition in Market Square, Belfry Tower…all the way up and the Basilica of the Holy Blood in Burg Square. The Dali exhibition ... read more

Bruges 23/05/2009 We paid in advance for our breakfast at the Casino Hotel and at 12€ we expected a lot since our wonderful feast last night was much less than that. We had a basic breakfast with bread, cheese, cereal, a little bacon, some eggs and some mushrooms. I think good advice will be to rather not have breakfast at your hotel, if they charge this much. We paid half the price for double the breakfast in Dublin. Our adventure for today was exploring the Citadel! The Citadel is huge and we approached it from just behind the Hotel Beauregard, by doing this we missed the actual mapped out walking paths, but we did walk the scenic route through the beautiful green “forest” that surrounds the Citadel. We walked along a windy dirt road all the ... read more

Namur 22/05/2009 It’s time to leave Paris, too soon, but we will never forget this wonderful city and will remember these three days for the rest of our lives. We made some wonderful memories, and hopefully we will be able to come back to Paris in a few years and explore a lot more of the city. After much deliberation we decided to skip Brussels, we only saw a small part as we rushed from the one train station to the other. We felt like it’s time to get out of the hustle and bustle of a big city, and since we didn’t go to La Proviance, we headed for Namur. Namur is a gem of a town, we actually had no idea what to expect, and were pleasantly surprised. We actually wanted to visit the ... read more

Paris 21/05/2009 Today Melinda’s feet were killing her, and we had no idea how we’re going to make the tour of the Château of Versailles. Melinda decided not to wear her hiking boots and opts for the only other shoes she packed for leg two of our trip. Flat boots with soft bendable soles. It sounded like a good idea at the time. The Château is unbelievable! We purchased tickets over the internet before leaving South Africa and even in this shorter queue it took us 45min to get into the palace. Every nook and cranny is decorated to the teeth! It’s hard to comprehend how rich the rich were in those times and unthinkable that just outside the golden gated the rest op the French died from hunger. The rooms are hung with enormous paintings ... read more

Paris 20/05/2009 Again we got up bright and early as we have a lot to do today. We buy tickets for the hop-on hop-of bus to explore Paris some more. Unfortunately we can’t go into all the places we would like to see, there is just too much to do and to little time. The streets are filled with coffee shops and small cafes, all the outside tables face the street and in Paris it seems the main past time is people watching. The vibe in Paris is amazing and we feel energetic and actually kind of jubilant. One of the best things we did today has to be the Catacombs. We went down what seems like hundreds of stairs and end up in a tunnel with a low roof and dainty lights. As we walked ... read more

London to Paris 19/05/2009 Waking up at 4h00 was a breeze since we were SUPER excited to be on our way to the City of Love. The taxi picked us up at 5h00, dropped us at the train station, we traveled by train and tube to arrive at St Pancras station, its HUGE!! Almost as big as an airport. Since we were a little early Leon had a cup of tea and Melinda spoils herself with hot chocolate, with whipped cream & a block of chocolate that she stirs in for sweetness! It’s heavenly! The EuroStar train is very comfortable and neat, we fall asleep easily and when we woke up we were already in France. We arrived at Gare du Nord, the station is huge and you can quickly see that you're now in Paris. ... read more

Sightseeing in London 18/05/2009 We were so glad that we decided to have this extra day in London before continuing our travels. The last few days we slept very little, to make sure we use our time to sight-see, and as the saying goes “sleep when you’re dead”. We didn’t mind in the least when Jaco asked us to stay at his place till 10h00, to open for the electrician to reconnect the neighbors power. This gave us time to sleep a bit later, repack our bags for the next week and a half and make some back-ups of the photos we’ve take so far. At 10h30 when the electrician still had not shown up, we decided to do a bit of sight seeing. We went to Tower Hill station and fount a gorgeous Italian restaurant ... read more

Bath, Lacock & Stonehenge 17/05/2009 Breakfast at the Holiday Inn was a variety of breads, cheeses, hot drinks and juices. We took some of the cheese as snacks for later. The weather is dreadful! It’s cold and windy, we hope it clears up by the time we get to Stonehenge as there is no cover and we will not be able to see the henge if the rain keeps pouring down like this. We arrive at the City of Bath; this must be one of the most beautiful cities we’ve seen so far on the trip. All the buildings are constructed of a light material that might me a kind of sandstone. We drive by one Nicolas Cage’s apartments, no 8 Circus street, should you want to drop by for tea if you are in the ... read more

Oxford, Cotswold, Slaughter, Burford, Bourton on the Water & Bristol 16/05/2009 http://www.internationalfriends.co.uk/oxford-cotswolds-bath-lacock-and-stonehenge.html use the link to see the tour description We woke up bright and early and got ready for our only planned tourist trap tour. Jaco took us for a healthy McDonald’s breakfast, and even Leon enjoyed McDonald’s, which he usually despises! We had bacon & cheese Bagel with hot chocolate. Even the McDonald’s are better in London. The décor is much better and it’s much cleaner and neater. From there it's off to find our pick-up point. Jaco dropped us off and went off to work. We had some trouble finding where we should be as there was no clear indications, just a hidden street address, and after recalculating we found the pick-up point, that we walked past twice before realizing!... read more

Wicklow Mountain Adventure 15/05/2009 We decided we wanted to get out of the hustle and bustle of gorgeous Dublin and take a tour through the countryside. To make sure that we get space for the tour we got up really early, and very glad we didn’t go to the club last night. We took the scenic route through St Stephens Green which is the nearest park to where we stayed and were amazed at how beautiful it is! It’s like a little Eden in the middle of Dublin, with huge trees, small walkways and bridges over the streams that criss-cross the park, there is even ducks and swans on the water. It’s still early and the fine drizzle and mist made the park look like it escaped from a fairy tale. It’s 7°C, but because there ... read more
