Carlo, Jimena and I headed up to Cambridge for the weekend as an escape from London and to see more of England while we’re here. On the way in the city centre, we found a farm show at the park which we had a good look around before dropping our gear off at the only backpackers in town. We had organised a walking tour around Cambridge, starting off at The Eagle, a pub where top academic minds would come together over pint and discuss / nut out their latest theories and the lab where Ernest Rutherford, a great NZ physicist, spend a lot of his time developing his works before receiving a Nobel prize in chemistry. We had a look through the Great St Mary’s Church, and up the large bell tower where you could see ... read more

You can't have a trip like ours and not mentally note things that deserve recognition, and sadly some things that deserve to be highlighted for their not so good qualities. These awards are representative of the good and bad things of our trip. So here in a blaze of smoke and lazers are the 2007 Trip Awards! "Cue Strobes!" "Lighting in five, four, three...." " You're on guys- just follow the autocue on camera three" * Drumroll * "Here, broadcast live from a secret location in the Buckinghamshore countryside are the two thousand and seven TRIP AWARDS!!! Please give a warm welcome to our hosts, Max and Clare!!" * Rapturous applause from the audience* Max: "Thank you, thank you. Oh stop, thank you! Welcome to the inaugural awards and thank you for being here to celebrate ... read more

We had pre-booked (and paid for) a trip to Stonehenge and Bath earlier in the week, so when our alarms went off at 6am on Saturday morning we forced ourselves to get up rather than stay in bed all morning. We arrived at the meeting point a little early so had a much needed coffee. It turned out that the trip was a big hit and over 150 people had booked - the biggest BUNAC trip ever we were told - which meant they had to arrange an extra bus so we were a bit late getting away. Bus trips have never been my cup of tea but I have to say this one was truly appalling. There was some problem with the air conditioning system which caused the back third of the bus (where we ... read more

(I buried the headline so you need to read towards the bottom.) It’s a Small World 2007 . . . . . While I was waiting to fly out of LAX, I decided to buy one last “quality” magazine to catch up on Lindsay Lohan’s latest shenanigans (I try to stay away from these when I’m traveling and stick to books). As I was waiting in line the guy in front of me looked awfully familiar. It was Brandon Buza who I met a year ago when he was interested in renting my house in San Francisco. He didn’t, but we became friends. When I returned from my last trip he asked me about the cooking school I went to in Tuscany as he was planning an Italy trip. He was at LAX airport on ... read more

Weather Report That word again - yep ! - you guessed …. gloomy. Wednesday through to Friday I was cloaked in dull grey skies. Although there was little rain the light was really quite useless for photography. Saturday dawned gloomy but with promise of clearing skies. A hint of blue appeared by late-morning which was rather late to achieve much by bike so I packed the car and set-off for a circuit to the north and north east of Sawtry. This is an area on the Huntingdonshire / Northamptonshire border that is completely new to me and I was pleasantly surprised and can recommend a number of delightful villages. Villages such as Glatton with their colourful thatched cottages and timber frames are worth a few minutes of your time even if there is no specific ... read more

Extremely excited this was it, we were off on our travels, and we checked our tickets with anticipation. Oh no we were one day ahead of ourselves. Well no worries we packed up and said our goodbyes and started in the direction of Portsmouth. We had set up John Cheese’s voice on the Tom Tom who directed us safely to our first “place of interest “ Not a site I would put my hand up and book a tour for , but all the same a essential stop . Not to keep you in suspense any longer it was yes the A&E department at Brighton Hospital. Yes a minor paragliding incident the day before involving Matt, his glider, a barbwire fence and a heavy landing. You could not wish for better timing. Seen by the ... read more

Bournemouth Europe » United Kingdom » England By clarkeyJune 9th 2007Brian ClarkeAfter the horrors of Brighton it was great to finally see some sand upon my return to Bournemouth. This city is a great place to party and, as per my last visit here, I ended up sleeping on a mattress in the staff section of the Walkabout! For some strange reason the Brits feel the need to surround anything resembling a beach with a collection of tacky rides and amusement parlours. Unfortunately Bournemouth is no exception. Despite that it's a great place to visit and close enough to London (about 2 hours on the train). So a great day trip when the sun is shining. ... read more

The flight over to London was dreadful... I had to sit next to a 70 year old Vietnamese drunk! He was abusing the free alkz until they stopped serving him, then he proceed to sing songs and laugh at nothing. After his 7th drink I left my seat and moved towards the back haha. 8hrs and I was in Vietnam for transit, went to see the oldies and of course EAT! mMm~~ Then another 13hrs to Paris France, 25 minutes to London... it was dreadful~ I manage to squeeze in so much in the 2 days I was there, I can also understand why so many Aussies pick up and head over there. The life is completely different to ours, so much to do and see. DAY 1: Bought a ticket for the Original Bus ... read more

Friday I meet up with Matt who had been paragliding in the South Downs and spending time with his paragliding friends before departing. I had spent the week in London sorting out the final arrangements staying with Mic and Kaz who treated me like a Queen thank you. I jumped in the train from London Victoria to Glynde in Sussex to meet Matt. We went to a beautiful country pub for a dinner and spent the night wild camping with the paragliding friends ... read more
